I was introduced to Phil Keaggy in 1980. I was 17 teen.I was a big Zeppelin fan.I was also a Beatles,Bowie, morrison,Aerosmith, deep purple, and Phil Keaggy. My best pick: Phil Keaggy.
The best thing about Keaggy is that he was never a follower who played just what would sell. His concerts were so atypical that many christian/pop music fans just didn't relate. It was like watching an artist begin to paint from the depths of his imagination. He wasn't doing caricatures by request at the county fair. It was simply his painting and if you appreciated it all the better. He has been creating beautiful works for over 35 years now!
I could sit and watch him play all day long.... If you've never seen him play live, you need to! One thing about Phil is that he's always very humble and gives all the credit to God for his talent.
What a beautiful song, and what a master! Such perfect timing and sound, and expressive emotion. Favorited! 5 stars! Personally I hold Phil Keaggy as dear as Tommy Emmanuel. Thanks to them for making the world a more beautiful place!
HE WROTE THIS SONG IN ONE DAY..... ONE DAY FROM START TO FINISH!!! Taylor asked him to do a demo of their guitar and write a song..... he got back to them that night with this piece!!!! Now THAT'S talent!!!!!!!!!
Recently lost one of my Brothers to Cancer. Seeing Phil playing a Taylor like my Brothers, made me think of him. Although, worlds apart in ability, my Bro was a perfectionist, never playing to a crowd unless he had it perfected. Phil reminds me of Him. Two amazing talents, one gone on ahead. Thanks for posting this.
Back in the 1990s, I used to provide lighting for plays and concerts in the central Kentucky area and was blessed to be able to do lighting for Phil at Georgetown College one evening. As a lighting designer, my job was to add atmosphere to the show with the lights. I will honestly say that it was impossible for me to do lights for this man. I realized 30 seconds into the concert, that there was absolutely nothing I could do to improve on his performance. I just lit the stage and stood there amazed! He gave me one of his old guitar strings. I still have it over 25 years later!!!
I think everyone who loves guitar music should make a point to see Phil live. It is simply an awesome experience because here's a guy who could by any worldly right have the largest ego, but Phil is the complete opposite. He gives all the glory to God and he is as humble as they come. For real. No act. Zero pretense. He knows how to play and he knows that he knows, but somehow, in the 10 plus decades I've followed him, I've never seen a shred of ego. And then there's the music. You can listen to all his albums and try, if you're able, to play along to some - but then you see him live and he just improvises a thing as almost a throwaway that others would consider their masterpiece. I am not ashamed to say that I cry almost every time I see him live. I really feel, no I BELIEVE, that there's a conduit there between God and Phil's music. And when you hear it, you'll feel it too. He may be hard to find live, but it's so very worth it.
Repent of your sins. Hell is a real place and without Jesus’s blood over you you will be cast into Hell for eternity. Every lie and every other sin has made you worthy of Hell. Repent! Change your ways! Follow Christ!
jerryboone1093, Thank you for sharing that. I often wonder if people who are not Christians enjoy Phil's music as much as I do, being the child of parents who grew up in the Jesus Movement era and listening to 70s Christian musicians since childhood (artists like Second Chapter of Acts, Matthew Ward, Michael Omartian, Kieth Green...). I generally expect it's hard for me to be objective about these things, since it feels so close to home--like maybe I just like him because he's a Christian and his music has been a part of my life since childhood. So, I'm glad someone from "outside" my experience affirms something I enjoy so much.
The great thing about Keaggy videos is that I can immediately throw them into my Phil Keaggy playlist before they even get started! You KNOW they'll be good!
I've heard Phil in concert five times; first time with Barry McGuire and The Second Chapter of Acts, circa 1977. Hadn't any idea who any of these folks were at the time, although I was a Christian and musician myself. Then with Randy Stonehill - what a contrast! Several times by his lonesome, just guitars and his magic box: wonderful.
He gets all of the muchly deserved credit for his playing, but I wish someone besides me would acknowledge that he a Christian Musician, writing Christian music, because that is very much an important part of his identity as musician.
The sound of His music. Somehow it mesmerized me quite differently than the others. The sound was more pure I'm guessing.I also regard Him as one of the guitarist as we'll.
@@jasonkritz3055 Wow, strange coincidence - I got this notification while I was listening to the FF8 soundtrack via itunes - nice FF7 playlist you got there!
It is two guitars, when he plays live, he'll use his music man to record the rhythms, and the beats using the guitar! He's the master, all time favorite guitarist!
Took me a while, but this very morning I wasn't very happy with my life or my guitar playing. But this song gives me hope, he's missing a finger, and he can still do this better than most. I think I can keep going.
I went to a guitar conference years ago and Phil Keaggy put on a concert for us. just him, an acoustic guitar and a looper. It changed the way that I play. He was absolutely phenomenal and very humble too.
thou art god, just remember we all stand on the shoulders of giants and in my not so humble opinion you will not get much higher than learning from this man.
simply great!.....as always!......always feel like Salieri{wrong spelling I'm sure} from Amadeaus, that watched and was in awe of Mozart but could never reach that same level been watching for 40 years now....only gets better! I keep being inspired and it keeps me playing!! Thanks Phil !!
I love this! I am an avid Keaggy fan, and a fellow guitarist but i am nowhere near his expertise on the instrument. I would like to think I try to emulate his stylings! Anyway, also love the filming . . . the camera is so fluid!
well, Thomas A. Edison once said: Genius is 1 % inspiration and 99 % transpiration. Though I believe there's more than 1 % of inspiration with this guy ;-) Just amazing how anyone can play like that.
Olsons are around $15 grand now, McPhersons $8.5K, Del is now retired but a used Langejans can be had for $2-5K. My dad loves his Langejans WGC-6,bought in 1999. Hard to find guitars that'll beat 'em.
How does the Charis compare? Ever play a Maton? Tommy Emmanuel plays one and although popular they are not greatly inflated do to the name. Olson is worth 8K but he can get 15K for it, so why not?
do u rekon this guy had any background in classical? jus the chords he use's, and the fact his nails are shapped 4 picking? i would like to see him play sum handel of bach wud b gud
What is this a commercial for Taylor guitars? Me I enjoy my 6 Martins. I agree the Olsen is a much superior guitar to the Taylor ( made in Mexico ) but Phil can make music beautifully on this guitar.
Saw Phil play "back in the day" many times, and believe me he definately wasn't "awful" people too often believe what they want and not what is. (you, not Phil)
Interestingly, Jesus was also quite against "religion." The religious elite were the only people on earth for whom Jesus held contempt, and his opposition to their "religiousness" ultimately got him killed. I know it may sound crazy but you might check him out, but just look at what he said and did. Just try it, as an honest seeker of reality, an honest seeker of truth. There is one great promise in the bible, "seek and you'll find." If it's true you'll find out, and if not you can move on.
fair enough, but you must realize that few are born with the natural inclination towards music and the potential to even possibly reach this level through practice. many will put in countless hours in their lifetime and never touch his league of musicianship. you can't blame him for thanking whatever deity he believes in. this is coming from an atheist.
I'm not sure what to call it but I'm a Christian to Atheist convert the opposite of what most people go thru. Too much of society has shown me that either there is no God or he is a royal monster and I'd rather be inclined the 1st option.
well i didn't want to bring this into the game, but.. look up Stephen Fry on God. i want to know your opinion. but i must say i don't care if he exists or not. If he does thus better for you, not, well why not live your life till the fullest. and not in an extreme 'yolo' way but fulsome.
Right. There is suffering in the world. Evil exists. I don't like these cold, harsh facts of life, either. Something to ask our Maker about when we meet Him, isn't it?
+Seppo h ............In The begining God CREATED the Heavens and the earth..he has placed Eternity in the hearts of us all. It is appointed for man once to die (after that, the personal judgement) Jesus came and DIED for us WE can be saved thru FAITH in His name..its only the sin of UNBELIEF in Jesus that sends any one to Hell! WE decide with our FREE WILL whether we accept Jesus or not...we reap the reward for faith in Him or punishment for rejection of his amazing sacrifice for us.. Selah..(pause and think on that)..
Amazing skills and a music genuis but people around the world are largely deaf to such wise music creation and musicians like him fails to get mainstream attention....God knows why..? Whreas all nonsense breed of artist like Justin Bieber, Rihana, Hip Hop, Raps earns a lot...
