To some extent. His Aqua Man sounds like his John Stewart and Kotal Kahn. At least he's not like Steve Blum where almost all of his voices sound the same.
JLU's Dwayne McDuffie once said of LaMarr something along the lines of, "People say Phil LaMarr is every black guy on the show, and I have to tell them, 'No, Phil LaMarr is EVERY guy on the show!'"
Phil literally is a voice of multiple generations. But his talent is so diverse that you could change through ten shows in a single hour and not realize he’s in every single one, even as multiple characters.
@@colleen4ever some kids might latch on to the voice... Like how I recognized James Earls Jones voice in The Lion King as being the guy who voiced Darth Vader
I was just about to respond, a voice actor IS the character. So much about the character is tied to their voice, by changing that you change the character. Just as Mark Hamil IS the Joker, Phil Lamarr IS Hermes, Samuri Jack, Wilt, a Jedi, and will always be.
Sollar Viccel Cartoon Network had an hour long special the night Samurai Jack premiered and had behind the scenes interviews with him, the other cast members as well as the creator of the show. I remember it like it was yesterday. ☺️
"even though I'm just a voice" my dude. you breathe the most life into characters with JUST your voice. That is some insane skill. do NOT downplay that ♥
@@YoungsterJoey151 some people do actually dante basco sounds nearly the exact same since he was 16 and now he's 46. The Late, great Adam west voice has sounded the same since he was batman till his tragic death a few years ago.
Fun Fact: The dude also does like 7+ more characters in Young Justice: The Reach Ambassador, Metron, Dubbilex, Green Beetle, Calvin Durham, L-Ron, and some extras.
@@darklightimages There's actually a reason for that. If I remember correctly at a panel in a con I attended here in Long Beach. One of the co-creators Greg Weisman said that he purposely did not let most of his cast reprise as any DC characters they played in past DC Animated projects. He wanted to just do his vision of the characters. That's why hardly anybody reprised as characters even though they were already in the show.
I can't be the only one who went "I knew Samurai Jack was Black!" When I found out Phil Lamar does his voice. Lol. This man is a national treasure! He has literally been a voice in my childhood, teenage years, and adult life. Loved this video and actor.
Well to me Samurai Jack was Samurai Jack when I was a child ☺️ Cool, Honourable and a role model. The Voice made me feel strong and confident. Thank you Mr. Lamar
I know voice actors like Troy Baker and Nolan North get a lot of praise for having range, but Phil LaMarr is on a whole different level! What a talented actor, and I hope he continues to get the recognition he deserves!!
Phil LaMarr maybe Hermes Conrad to me he’s either Samurai Jack or John Stewart / Green lantern. Or wilt because I love basketball and I love that movie good wilt hunting.
He mentioned that "it was cool to be a Jedi, even though it was just the voice". Darth Vader too, is just a voice over. May the force be with you Phil...
James Earl Jones actually put the costume on and acted on set. Didn't speak a word, yes, but delivered a performance nevertheless. Hand gestures and body language.
@@JohnDoe-dj3lw yeah, Jones complained in an interview that they had someone else in the costume, because he was black, even though you never saw him except the one scene they still race blocked him.
Nobody: Phil LaMarr: Not to brag, but I'm your childhood. Respect to the mf-ing man. Hands down one of the greatest and best black voice actors of all time. Thank you for the entertainment
@@gokuss15 You could say you don't, but there aren't many blk voice actors out there, esp of his caliber. So yea I do have to celebrate one of the most talented human beings on the planet, guess he happens to be black too.
"What's the weather lookin like Ollie?" *IT'S RAINING SIDEWAYS* "Sounds bad, didn't you bring an umbrella?" *HAD ONE* "Where is it?" *INSIDE OUT BOUT TWO MILES AWAY* "Sounds bad, would you like anything?" *BRING ME SOME SOUP* "What kind?" *CHUNKY!* "We'll get right on it Ollie" 😂
His portrayal of Virgil Hawkins aka Static Shock is one of the most heartfelt superhero performances EVER! Still makes me mad we haven't gotten a Static Shock movie all these years later!
Every couple of years, a writer or actor comes along who is convinced that *they* are the first one to make Aquaman cool, not realizing that Aquaman has been made "cool" about a dozen times now since at least the mid nineties.
At first, I thought the same thing, but that Aquaman wasn't so much "cool", as much as gritty or bada**. Of course, in that case I'd say much the same thing about the Momoa Aquaman, except his also had humor and swagger. "Cool" is just too up for interpretation.
Morgan Freeman: "black history is American history" Also Morgan Freeman: "You want a white history month?" Me seeing these comments... "Morgan Freeman was born in the wrong century!"
The fact that THIS GUY played not only the Aquaman we know now, but friggin’ BOLBI of all people! Out of al the characters he’s played up to this point, THAT was a mind blower more than any of them.
Had no idea Phil LaMarr was behind all these legendary voices. This man made my childhood/teenage years. Can't wait to hear more Hermes Conrad on the new Futurama episodes coming out.
I always tell my friends "Phil LaMarr is the male version of Tara Strong" in reference to the sheer number of animated voice roles he's had. He's always been an inspiration of mine, extremely versatile and memorable in any scenario. Actors in animation deserve way more credit than they get, and as an animation fan, bringing words on the page to life is one of the most noble professions in my humble opinion.
I was having a hard time believing he was Green Lantern AND Static Shock. The voices and personalities were so much different. Is good to get to know the actors behind those voices.
I wish this video was an hour long. Phil seems like such a cool guy with interesting stories and ideas. Static Shock was one of my favorite shows as a kid, Samurai Jack was my favorite as a teen (and still one of my top 5 now) and Futurama is my favorite as an adult. I love learning more about the people behind the voices of these things.
he is so good you can immediately recognize him in his most famous roles, but still versatile enough that I personally had no idea he was bolbi or Hermes
Phil, your voice acting for Wilt really helped me as a kid. I resonated so much with his personality and still to this day have similar mannerisms. Thank you for voicing him!
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I yelled "Wilt!!" I remember watching Samurai Jack, Static Shock and Foster's Home with my son when he was young. But I also remember watching him on MadTV and in Pulp Fiction when I was young! He's had such an amazing career.
I still remember Phil LaMarr's words about Samurai Jack's personality on a behind-the-scenes featurette. They were trying to figure out what kind of personality the character had, and what they settled on was what Phil called "a young, Asian Clint Eastwood".
Phil LaMarr, a legendary voice actor. You can't tell he plays that character until you read the credits or find out by yourself. And when you do find out, your jaw drops by how wide ranging his voice can be for the many characters he plays.
Phil: does so many characters with so many different voices you cant even recognize its Phil most of the time. Internet: *sleeps* Justing Roiland: does two voices and screams a lot Internet: *OmG HoW DOes HE Do THaT wiTh HiS vOiCe*
It honestly bothers me when people praise Justin Roiland as a voice actor.. yes it’s impressive that Rick and Marty sound different but literally EVERY other voice sounds like Morty
He voiced Black Vulcan on Harvey Birdman and made a reference to Aquaman. "My Name is Super Bolt, Aquaman said they should call me Black Vuluan I said how about I call you white fish!"
Props for him for voicing such an array of characters and nailing all their voices. Thanks for voicing a lot of my favorite childhood cartoons and making my childhood overall an awesome one!
Oh remember you were this and that in this movie? Most actors: Bro I did not watch or remember a thing you are talking about. Phil: I REMEMBER ALL MY BABIES
I thought that only applied to white actors playing nonwhite roles. Didn't know it would apply to everyone. This madness needs to stop. It doesn't do anything to stop systemic racism.
@@canaisyoung3601 cancel culture is going to start disproportionately affecting minorities (ESPECIALLY blacks) soon, in just a few years. Mark my words. Phil LaMarr is going to get cancelled for voicing a Japanese guy. Just you wait. Soon Hispanic and black voice actors are going to be cancelled. Very soon cancel culture is going to do a 180 and will start telling black people what they can and can't do.
I mean voice acting talent needs to find more people as most voice acting is like 20 people. That’s how you help everyone expand the pot of voice actors and higher good talent and get talented people into good roles like Samurai Jake. Once everyone is limited by race what voice you can play we will lose a lot of good talent options. Got now big focus is whites in non white roles but there’s already talk of others playing outside their race.
This dude has an incredible memory. He remembered the exact line Hermes said in Futurama, he remembered Jon Stewart's Green Lantern number. I would love to see him play the "did you say that" game on Jimmy Kimmel.
My single favorite Green Lantern, ever. He took his job serious, among the other Green Lanterns he made so much more sense. Samurai Jack is basically thee icon of Action Cartoons.
Samurai Jack is to this day still my favorite show ever and Phil's performance as Jack is a huge part of that, with a character who doesn't have much dialogue, he really makes every line count and makes what could come off as a boring character in weaker hands seem so personable yet powerful.
Now, this is the kind of interview we want. This man gave so many children across the world characters that they could sympathize with and marked so many people's childhoods.
Goodness me, I had no idea what Phil LaMarr looked like before I watched this but boy, he looks great! Not to mention an extremely versatile VA. I mainly know him as Hermes in Futurama but he effortlessly jumps into so many characters just by switching his pitch, tone or placement - he deserves to be recognised as one of the great voice actors for sure!
Vamp: Combination of both. Jack (Raiden) Tried to kill him for years, he is "immortal " "vampire" (really normal, but infused with nano machines that make him immortal. Only to be killed, when he was injected with a syringed that took away his power and made him suffer every would he had all at once and die.) - Condensed version of MGS2 Phil Lamar's Character
Phil was a voice in every single one of my favorite childhood stories, especially Samurai Jack, and Justice Leauge. I remember purposefully sneaking out of my room late at night to be able to watch new JL episodes as they came out. Thank you Phil for helping create my love of story telling.
