I heard Phil sing this live in 1973 on the day the draft ended. When the concert was over, he came to the keg party. We chatted for an hour or so before he had to catch his plane. He was a great guy.
Thanks for playing Phil Ochs. Classic song. I am also on the far left. I listened to Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Odetta, etc... in the early 70's in my late teens, and songs like this from the 1960's helped me to formulate my political views and outlook on life. I have several Phil Ochs albums including the infamous "Gunfight At Carnegie Hall" from 1970, when he dressed up like Elvis Presley and sang songs from the 1950's in addition to his own compositions from the 1960's. Check out this song from that album including his words to the audience at the end. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DEt6UhKfzY4.html. Check out the whole album. Take care. Love seeing older folks and hippie types being on the far left. Funny enough my college math tutors were old hippies and far-left Marxist-Leninists back in the day that were into Phil Ochs and people like Pete Seeger, which is how I got introduced to 60s folk and protest music.
I've encountered too many Liberals that this song fits to a Tee. My dad was a Staunch Republican and Heritage Foundation member, by contrast my mother's family (she was the 3rd of 9) are or were more Liberal. My mother's immediately older sister really got under my dads skin (partially due to the fact that he molested her son), and my dad thought she "Indoctrinated" me into Liberalism. She was a school teacher and preferred to mingle with White Collar intellectuals (Fine Wine, Classical Music, Etc.) abd I as a Neurodivergent who was more into Jazz (though I enjoy satire, so I can get into certain Folk, Country and other performers when it's present, hence Phil Ochs)but my tastes were too pleabeian for me to mingle in my Aunt's social circles. My dad wanted to be an "Eligible Bachelor" when I needed a father around and then wanted to be a father when I was essentially a young adult (he treated me like a "Troubled Teen" all too often. Anyway my persuit of playing Jazz took me out of the Suburbs (also being put into a Left Leaning private school that had fir example a College Level history Teacher) as a result I turned Ideologically quite different than he.
Born far too late to have ever had a chance to listen to Phil Ochs in person. I listen to his songs daily and his songs are the only pieces of music that I felt something out of. My personal favorite is Pleasures of the Harbor.
Wow, I just played it. I don't know why but I can't reply to your other comment about Larkin Poe. I just love them ever since I discovered them on a "Playing For Change" video. I've got a bunch of their music on the channel, including some of their earlier stuff as "The Lovell Sisters". Truly great talents.
Check out the song “I Kill Therefore I Am” by Phil Ochs. I think you’ll find it very fitting considering the recent events you touched on at the beginning of the video.
Great song and reaction. 2 more songs from Phil Ochs i'd recommend- "Ringing of Revolution" and "Canons of Christianity", though ther;s certainly more to choose from. A great man chanelling the voice of a generation who died too young.
I always suggest Ode to Mississippi, but that’s as a Mississippian, as it protests everything wrong with the state, so it may not be applicable for many others. Love your reactions though.
Sure, the racist mega zionist is the one we should choose! And if you think he's some kind of centrist and not an unhinged right winger I don't know what to tell you!
