A few more amazing photographs to look at 👍 It got me thinking why the majority of best five images of those brilliant photographers is mostly B&W photographs in the old times. They are old and taken decades ago. These photographers you've interviewed have been in the photography industry for a long time, with loads of experience as well as great insight of photography. If they find "old images" more valuable, more educational, more exceptional, more exciting than the ones in 21st century, I feel like we haven't got great enough photographs in today's era. Or perhaps those "old images" are just most influential and educational to them because they are old. I mean, they are not like in their 20th or 30th. What I mean by "they are old" is that they've got enough experience and seen more great images than other "less great photographers" like us. Classics are of course one of the greatest not only in the photography world, but I was thinking that it'd be quite exciting and fun if I could see some newer images in this series and hear why they chose them. I also prefer the older B&W images than the newer ones that are taken in the 2000s and sometimes ask myself why those newer images attract less attention. I couldn't find the answer yet as I'm so amateur. I am aware that those five images are subjective and personal. Even though you've interviewed different photographers in different fields with different background, I've just found something in common which is quite interesting and makes me think a lot.

R&R, I think you're seeing a lot of older images, in part because we've asked them to talk about images that influenced them and their careers. People tend to look back when they think like that.

What a amazing set of images selected by Phil. Thanks for making these videos. Not only do I learn about the guest, but gain knowledge about a set of photographers that, in some cases, I've not come across. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Absolutely agree with Phil on the Stravinsky portrait. What an amazing picture, simple yet powerful. I also love the fact that the choice of the camera angle shows the piano as a b flat symbol.

If one was really trying to improve their photography. What would be the best advice for them?

Photobooks. If you’re like most people, you probably can’t afford to just buy every photobook you want - however - check your library. Write down the names that come up again and again in this “myfive” series and search your library catalog. Bigger libraries can have pretty surprising collections. I’m visiting New Orleans right now and found an ORIGINAL copy of The Americans in their reference section. I like to stop by there in the earlier afternoon, look at a book or two, and after a while the urge to leave the library and go photograph is irresistible. It is high octane fuel… Another good tip is that some bookstores offer flip-through videos on RU-vid (Unobtanium Books, to name one). You can play these videos back at slow speed and press pause when you need to. It’s the next best thing to seeing a book in person. But definitely… looking at a lot of books. Not just photos but art - figure out what resonates with you. Then figure out why. Then figure out how to get that into your own work. After books, I think getting critiques - although this is easier said than done. You don’t want just some rando internet people telling you to use the rule of thirds. You need people who know their shit. Palm Springs Photo Festival is good.. you pay a bunch of money but you get access to people who would (probably) otherwise never give you the time of day. Of course that’s not the only way to get good critiques but it’s a good place to start.

Evertking1, that's a very hard question to answer without knowing where you are in your learning, and what you would like to do. And everyone will have a different answer. My broad advice would be to just go out and take pictures. Do what makes you happy. Look at photography. There's a long history of photography that can inspire and inform you about what you could potentially do. And then find a community of supportive photographers, people who you can talk to about what you're doing and who can guide you as well. But mostly have fun.
