I first studied with Phil at the National Stage Band Camps in West Chester, PA in 1972. Phil, Rich Matteson, Marian McPartland, John LaPorta, Gary Burton, Jamey Abersold, Ed Soph and others were the faculty. Then, spent summer of '73 at Berklee taking lessons with Phil and learning a lot. Thanks Phil.

I remember being in Birdland and The Metropole as a young boy, seeing the greats perform in person. That goes back to '61-'65. Phil's memory is accurate. That room was very long and narrow, not suited for lie big band jazz. Birdland was more traditionally constructed, but in a basement,......"down them stairs, lose them cares". Above the stairway was a sloped ceiling that had LP covers stapled to it. Maynard's Roulette sides were among those so displayed.

@30:40, Phil begins to talk about Woody's Band cutting WOODY'S WINNERS in 1965, and Ronnie Zito replacing Jake Hanna on drums, and then he talked about Woody's Band playing "My Favorite Things" on The Ed Sullivan Show (March 21 1965), where the band was lined up in a long row, ala The Metropole in NYC. Here is MY FAV THINGS on The Ed Sullivan show - fantastic! Phil's Solo begins @1:24 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1-HQDFTxbBI.html
