1955 Fender Stratocaster, two pickup model. 1998 Custom Shop prototype, stripped to natural finish. This is a prototype based on the extremely rare guitar, custom built for and formerly owned by the innovative player and songwriter "Thumbs" Carllile as seen in "The Galaxy of Strats" book (pages 130-131). Back of peghead reads "Proto" Thumb's and has John's decal, includes a copy of the Letter of Authenticity from John English to then owner Larry Briggs and the original Custom Shop fax from John to Larry. Complete with center pocket Tweed case.

Thanks for doing the Thumbs guitar. The strange placement of the neck pickup really did grab the eye when it was on the wall back there.

@elbentzo We appreciate and hear all your requests, however, we will from time to time switch things up. there were 10 guitars in this session, and we did not use the AC-30. As soon as all these episodes have been released we will decide what we want to do for the next session. I never thought that it would cause such a concern for 10 videos that we changed the formula slightly. After 300 videos we would hope you'd support and enjoy the videos no matter what the back line is..

Thumbs was my grandfather. Does this guitar still exist? My son, Thumbs' great-grandson has taken the torch and I know he'd be interested in this.

@valvepower RELAX GUYS!!! The AC-30 will be back, we will however try different things in videos from time to time.. Remember we do 10-12 guitars in a session.. so while it seems like a long time for you... it was only 1 day of shooting for us...

@Gleefan39 the usual placed strat neck pickup sounds pretty killer for hendrix, SRV, jeff beck, ritchie blackmore and a kazillion other players. plus... if you listen to a humbucker in the neck position of a 24 fret guitar, it doesn't sound quite right. just something to think about when you're pondering the sweetness of this neck pickup.

@J89898080 I think he just plays it haf step lower. And the giutar is tuned 1/2 lower too. Chords are Asus2 / F#m(leave b and e strings open) / E / Dsus2

Wow, I always kind of thought of Purple Rain as a joke, or didn't take it all that seriously. After hearing Phil play it the way he did...it was so beautiful. And then with the lead riffs sliding in between chords like hendrix...Phil you usually melt my face off, but this time I'm glad you melted my heart. (didnt realize how lame and cheesy that would sound, but I'm not changing it...)

That's an amazingly fat and full sounding axe. That skull & crossbones belt buckle makes me nervous so close to the back of that guitar. And Jeff Healey died awhile back from the eye cancer that made him blind years ago. R.I.P. He was in the Patrick Swayze film "Roadhouse", you know.

@srka42 the songs Phil plays aren't scripted, therefore sometimes HE is the only one that knows = he's too busy to go back through and list everything he plays... Plus that being said, you have to do some work too!!! Seek and Destroy!

@J89898080 hes playing a half step down not in standard so it probably sounds different. the chords are somform of C i think, a D, and idk the rest lol
