That D minor chord at 5:39 - Heavenly. Every time I hear Phil X demo a type of guitar I don't own, I immediately start wanting one. DAMN YOU PHIL X!!! Seriously though, this thing sounds amazing. It does the humbucker thing and still has plenty of Fender clarity. Must be the old-school Wide Range pickups.
That's just a Tele for you...clarity. The semi-hollow also helps it on that clean side, IMO, and taking out some of the unnecessary bass frequencies for electric guitar in a band mix---it's a mid range instrument, just add some highs and go! Semi-hollow with humbuckers gives you strong drive sounds, but still retains clarity, and still beautiful cleans---also at loud volumes allows for the magic feedback to come in faster. I think it's the most versatile guitar, period...
I dropped the pole pieces out of the back of mine and slightly raised the ones on the front. It sounds even more oldschool now. I may add them back in on one of the pups-we’ll see. It’s a super versatile guitar.
@@neils891 i got one...i mostly play telecaster and i decided to buy the '72 thinline, natural finish too......mine is the classic vibe serie, alnico humbacker pickups, not the cunife.....oh god, the first day i played it i was dissapointed, it seemed to be an useless guitar, was about to give it back, but i finally kept it with me sayin' to myself "ok, it'll be my battle guitar"....so i was, day to day, knowin' more about the versatility, about its particular tone, its particular dynamic, its sound....jazz, gipsy jazz, raw delta blues sound (bridge pickup, awesome) funk, classic rock stuff, country......after one year i couldn't leave the guitar in its case....i tried 10's and 11's 'cause it brings 9's out of the box....it works fine with 10's (it's a bit harder than solid body teles to play, the strings become heavier in a 72 thinline, somethin' that i noticed) well, what i mean to say is that this guitar has to be the most underrated guitar ever......i think the reason why it is not much popular is because when you first play it is not what expected, you may find it useless and you don't get its magic touch....that's, at least, what happened to me.....i couldn't live without it nowadays.....a funny point about my thinline is that i changed to cunife pickups and after one month i put the alnico squier ones back on it....love it to the bone
Sometimes I play guitar and I think, "I am pretty fucking good at this." Then I watch this guy, see he can play ANYTHING and I think, "I am a fucking talentless hack." Fucker...
I've gotta hand it to you, dude. You make these videos informative and fun, they inspire me to get playing myself. But specifically about your playing, you have a great combination of pure technique and feel. Your improvisation is great, your note selection is tasteful and your solos are melodic, not just speed-wanking. It's the way I try to play every time I pick up the guitar. No memorized licks and showing off. Just pure fun and love for the music.
It might have been really badly timed, but that all along the watchtower jam was magic! wow...one of the best guitar players you have never heared of for sure!
doodoo Yea I got to meet Phil X at the Anaheim NAMM Show about 3 yrs ago, seemed more serious then while demo'ing the Evil Robot amps, but perhaps just tried from his 3rd day there. He was still amazing and a lot of fun.
I think a vintage 70's Tele Thinline will be my next guitar purchase. I've always wanted one. I like how the tone is somewhere between the brightness and twang of a Strat and the midrange punch of a Les Paul. It's kind of like the best of both worlds.
It's not being forced, that's how he's always been. It's to keep an energy going, like a more interesting personality. If you ever see him talk when he's not doing these reviews he's actually pretty calm and he's real down to earth.
7:15 describes basically everything I've ever played on guitar....hahaha [really crying inside] 8:51 if he had just played all minor, he would've nailed the opening riff to "No One Knows" by Queens of the Stone Age!
What a character... Such a nice change from some of the "I'm SO cool cause I do reviews on RU-vid" guys out there, and I love how broad a range of musical interests/guitar styles he has too.
dude, you got balls, i will give you that. it's just phil's way. i know it can be tough to get past sometimes, but phil is like the crazy, goofy friend we all have. can be a but much to handle at times, but worth it. hang in there bro, you'll come around.
Phil , it's a good thing you play so well. You knew nothing about the Widerange pickups ( CuNiFe) , no longer available. Anyway I'm not slagging you, you're a great player and fun person. I did have to laugh at your ignorance of this sought after ender model. Cheers.
Once you play WRHB's everything else (except maybe Filtertrons) just sounds dark and muddy... Seth Lover truly perfect the HB with the WRHB. FYI Phill, the reason the WRHB sounds so unique is that it has magnetic pole-pieces (made out of CuNiFe) instead of bar magnets like regular HB's and the wider/bigger sized pup has more magnetic field around the strings. You can almost get that Strat like "boing" and "ping" on the neck or Neck/bridge combo settings and messing with the tone knobs.
I got a japanese lawsuit copy of this guitar. I dug it up after watching this video. I think my copy is equally awesome, can't believe I forgot about it. It just has a minor problem with the neck - it's slightly slanted.
I understand where you're coming from, sometimes the dude takes it a little too far with his antics, but you can't deny the skill that is behind his personality. Watch some of his older videos and if you don't enjoy his demeanor b/w his playing skip around and listen and listen to the pure genius he produces on his axe. I don't know too many jock rockers who can play Hendrix as well as Phil does or even physically lose themselves in an improvised solo that most guitarist couldn't comprehend.
I love the contrast between PHIL X!!!!! and the guy on the desk trying to work; his total immunity to PHIL X!!!!'s charisma makes it way funnier for me
