One of my best friends that reviews for one of the major magazines said the Salk Sound SS 9.5 was one of the best rooms. It was 11k and beats many 30k speakers. This level of speaker is good not just for the money but good. So I get why you love this thing. Problem is it’s not a Wilson or a Magico or a Sopra 2 Focal and they don’t have the marketing budget. More people need to listen to stuff like this.

You are spot on. I've gone out of my way to not constantly call out the price hype associated with some brands, with the exception of Alta Audio, guilty for lambasting ML. However, I find it more troublesome how easy it is for someone to spend $5K on major mass produced speakers and they never even give these other small brands a shot. Being in the home integration business - all I hear about is Sonos this and Sonos that...now people are thinking Samsung is Hifi!!! Anyway, whatever gets people started in the hobby is a good thing, I love to see individuals curiosity peaked. That's when they start asking valuable questions. There are many paths to unlocking more from music; Dennis Murphy of Philharmonic Audio created a beautiful shortcut.

I own a pair of Raidho Acoustics D1.1 2-way monitors. The mfg list price is crazy expensive at $30k for the premium finish and upgrade stands. Many dealers (at one time) were selling these at the street price of $20k and under. I picked up a demo pair for $12k 3 years ago. Does anyone have first hand experience comparing the D1.1 to the BMR.
@pennfootball71
@pennfootball71 Год назад
@@jymcaputo For 12.5k that is a great deal! Rhaido had a 70 point or 70% dealer markup did you know that? that is why so many people got big big discounts. BUT now they have a new distributor that takes a bigger cut and dealers only have a 50 point markup allegedly. So the discounts are not what they used to be possibly and allegedly. I can not confirm nor deny this comment.

@2ChannelListening
@2ChannelListening 2 года назад
Thank you for the nice comment Mikhail. To my knowledge, Mr. Murphy does not offer stands, none are listed and I never thought to ask. If I were to do it over again, I would work with Jim Salk to have him build matching stands with the matching veneer of choice - just be prepared to pay a good deal more than Monoprice cast metal stands. Regarding what amp I would pair. Luckily the new V.2 is a magnitude order more efficient than the original, thus so many more good budget worthy integrated amps will play nice. I would say keep the power figures above 60 watts per channel and you will have no issues rocking with these speakers. I used Class D, biased B, A/B and A with them, and none were offensive. Honestly, the speakers are so good, just about any decently built amp will work well - I wouldn't dare narrow it down - not a cop out or duck, just a fact.

Thanks for the well thought out review. I’m thinking of putting my KEF LS50 on the market to finance these. I love the detail and clean sound of the LS50. Am I right to assume that the RAAL brings even more detail to the mix? One thing I’m not very fond of with my LS50 is it’s narrow dispersion in my larger space. It has great imaging but is missing the width to the stage. I again assume that the BMR would totally disappear in comparison because of its wide dispersion characteristics? I’ve never used a ribbon speaker before so I’m very intrigued with this speaker. I listen to a lot of genres of music but mostly play classic rock and 80s. Also have a Rel T9/x that can pair with them. Thank you 🙏🏼
@2ChannelListening
@2ChannelListening 2 года назад
The Rel T9 will really give you full range mix with the BMR. Now, to answer your Raal question, I have to be careful here. The BMR driver (mid-range) is providing a lot of the width and vocal presence. The Raal is crossed over higher as sweet fill in and you do get a good sense of sound stage width, more so than two way only designs with a Raal. Happy hunting.

Great Review! Did you try pairing it with the Unico? thoughts? Do you feel that for most music not including an Organ these speakers are fine without a Sub?By the way I do like listening to film scores as well. LOTR ..Pirates, DaVinci code and Hanz Zimmer in general.
@2ChannelListening
@2ChannelListening 2 года назад
In my opinion, at lower listening levels, the bass notes are there, just not as pronounced. It takes some current to begin feeling the notes, so if one is also looking for lower level "impact", I would say you still need a sub. When you listen at moderate levels, that's when the SB Acoustic driver really starts to impress with its output. Regarding pairing of amps, the BMR's sound great with everything I threw at it. I used my little 12 watt tube, my 25 watt mini integrated all the way up to the 250 watt mono's. These speakers do like some heft and rocked the best with big watts. They sounded nice and delicate with the lower powered amps without sounding anemic. The Unison was really good, but I wouldn't settle on it alone for the BMR's.

Hi Igor, pretty much within 6-8 inches of the rear wall, the bass reinforcement gets to be a bit much - however, some may like that. Cannot comment on 705's other than the B&W treble bump in most crossover designs. I once owned older 704's, they weren't for me.

Thank you for the sub sir. As much as I enjoy the 2EX, the BMR’s are an even greater step up in total dynamics and midrange presence. Greetings and thank you Nitin; the crossover and Raal in this configuration work incredibly well. The BMR driver is handling most of the midrange frequencies and therefor, this is a very smooth 3 way design, capable of non-fatiguing high output. Given I listen to lots of progrock and acoustical guitar, there is no real metal stridency. Only the worst of recordings (aka Sarah Brightman) will you hear ugly sibilance.

Are you going to go with an integrated amp or separate pre and power amp? As to selling a lot of you gear, I wish that I had the means to buy your Unico or Tektons from you. : -) Also about your recent post about tape decks, I still have my H-K CD401 and it still sounds good (nearly CD quality) to this day.

Hello Mr. Goldin, I have to tell you, I am slow rolling the new front end - unlike everything else I do, lol. Funds are always the arbiter of the results. There have been a few very odd, budget pieces I've had to sit on my hands over - Hafler and seldom seen NAD model. I really want to pair the Avalons with a powerful tube amp, but that is impractical for as much glow time as I would put it through...I'm letting fate take this wheel.

Great speakers. Very smooth and articulate and coherent. Very wide sound stage for a speaker of this size and price. Bass is tight and a bit "dry" to my ears in my room. Very clear especially on string bass. Very wide dispersion may give you some issues in a highly reflective space It plays plenty loud enough for me but SPL freaks might not be happy. They do need good clean power to sound their best. Dennis Murphy is warm, friendly, knowledgeable and very responsive regarding any questions you might have regarding his products. He is honest and makes no exotic (snake oil) claims for his product. If you have the bucks, consider BMR towers especially if you like orchestra, jazz or any acoustic musical style. For your size of room, I would recommend the BMR based on their output levels I've experienced in small vs. larger rooms. The Sierra's are better suited to small/medium rooms, whereas the BMR's can really fill a large room adequately at moderate volume. The bass punch is more pronounced in the BMR, important for your 11' listening distance.

@@2ChannelListening Planning an upgrade to what I have now and have looked at alot of speakers between 1K to $2.5K. Wanted to shrink everything down but with speakers, I'd consider something of a larger standmount, particularly if it is a DM design. The big question is, can I get away with a lower powered amp at low to moderate volumes but fills my space. I don't need/want to listen at high volumes anymore but look for sufficient depth, separation and good tonality, something that does well with both music (classical/sonatas, some jazz, blues, folk, and acoustic...and movie soundtracks and speech. Coming from a Focal 807W looking for more low end, mid performance and smoother but still extended highs. I switched from a Hegel h160 to a Keces E40 which outputs about 25% of the Hegel and in my midsize room and about 8 feet from each speaker essentially performs as well. Still have the Hegel also. So, can I get away with a 34/62 watt//claimed up to 15 amp output into 8/4 ohms for the BMR speaker or does it really need power and more volume levels to shine? Considering a 100 watt amp/integrated, lighter than h160 so it's possible but really like the Keces in spite of lower power. It does a very nice job for the budget. Always wanted to try the Phil BMR speakers. Any thoughts/guidance appreciated.

Hello Brian, in general terms, bigger speakers sound fuller, either by way of larger drivers or additional drivers to more efficiently distribute frequency ranges. The BMR would sound maybe a tad fuller, especially in the mid-band, but nothing I say as a big difference. I suppose you have to experiment, do you have the room size to accommodate Dali Rubicon 6? @2ChannelListening 2 года назад
Hello NC, personally, I think 28" would be too tall. The BMR's are tall monitors at 18" themselves. I had them on 20" stands, the tweeter was only just above my ears. You would need something to rake them forward a few degrees to compensate. Nothing dramatic, but you do not want the woofers at ear height. Good luck.

I watched your review of the tekton uruz first and your summary of them towards the later half of the review was perfect for my needs. The overall sound quality of the BMRs stand out to me. I was also very content to drop the DW6 off my list based off your comparison with the Uruz. Could you give me a comparison of these two speakers head to head?
@2ChannelListening
@2ChannelListening 11 месяцев назад
I'll do my best taken in the context of use case and what you are paying for. The BMR is by far the more room friendly, placeable and decor agnostic speaker of these two. You are paying for the SB Acoustic woofer as well as a Raal tweeter versus a Chinese tweeter in the Tekton. Tekton is about maximum performance for the least money spent. Hence the less than appealing finish quality. Sonically, the BMR is more refined for small and medium size rooms. Plays a bit flatter and has a smidge more inner detail. Where the Tekton comes back is volume and power handling. At the end of the day, the Tekton ribbon tweeter crossed over at 5K is safe for you to pump huge power into the Eminence driver and treat it like a barbarian. If polite music is your thing, ignore the Tekton. The BMR will get rowdy to a point, but these two speakers cater to different folks. I love listening to loud rock on the Tekton, it does not fatigue me and it has real useful 32hz muscle. While the SB Acoustics 6" is very impressive, it will not hit like a 10" paper driver. Again, BMR is speed with finesse, Uruz is more refined 'sounding' than a DW MKII, but still has full rock cred. Cheers.

The underlying bass was too much and to be honest the tweeter didn't have enough zing. Using them in a 4.1 ht setup at moderate volume. Thinking maybe the 2ex's may go better?
@2ChannelListening
@2ChannelListening Год назад
Too bad those Rubicon's didn't work for you, I used them for 3.1 duty well enough. The Phil's are larger speakers and "can" play louder. However, the nature of the ribbon tweeter is a tad sweeter, smoother than the 29mm unit in the Dali's (my opinion with ribbons). I think the Phil's sound better when pushed at moderate volumes, to really appreciate their capabilities. If you want more zing, you probably should look at Focal.

@2ChannelListening
@2ChannelListening 2 года назад
Well, if you remove the bass advantage of the BMR, one is still left with a slightly more fleshed out mid-range thanks to the namesake driver. The Sierra 2EX and BMR are matched only in the upper treble, being they share a Raal design. The Sierra 2EX is still an excellent office or bedroom speaker, however, once the room gets bigger, the BMR is more appropriately suited to larger spaces.

So, despite what many people think about RU-vid content providers, I do not make enough money monthly to buy two SACD's...just a fact (at least today). So the bulk of all my purchases are self funded, second hand market, with a few exceptions. I have a few local audio friends that lend me their gear and have me give them a verdict, so that helps fill in some gaps when I cannot come up with a new piece. The list you provided me are all amazing stand mounts I would love to review, but cannot afford to purchase on my own. The Fritz, eh, sometimes that one comes close to my wheelhouse on Hifi Shark. I think the Fritz is the most compelling - and fits with my small boutique philosophy. Joseph still punches too far above my pay grade. I got lucky with the Totem's - bought them at a Hifi Store liquidation auction.

So, based in large part on this review I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a pair of curved rosewood BMRs that will ship out to me next week sometime. As I watched your review for the 4th or 5th time I saw on your detractions list that you wish you hadn't gotten the rosewood and wished you had gotten walnut. Walnut wasn't an option offered to me and I didn't see an option for curved on Salk's website. I was wondering why you regretted the rosewood, and definitely second guessing myself as this is by far my most expensive audio purchase. Also I was curious as to how you think these would perform in a near field environment, and also how they would do as a home theater option with an av receiver as their amplification? Any info would be greatly appreciated, and thanks a ton for the great work you do on the channel!
@2ChannelListening
@2ChannelListening 2 года назад
First, let me say thank you very much for your kind comments and enthusiasm. The main reason I dislike the curved Rosewood version is the super high gloss finish has a plastic quality to it - I prefer warmer muted finishes. I understand supply is very short for Mr. Murphy. I do not recommend the BMR as nearfield speakers anymore than I would recommend floor standing speakers as nearfield units. Why, speaker height, driver separation and the necessary space required for the sound field to integrate. Depending on where your ears are placed and how close, you will get one of the drivers dominating the frequency response. Now, as to the AV receiver; if you are using it as a stereo integrated amp, I would not bat an eye. However, if you are asking your AV receiver to deliver full spec power to the BMR and driver 3 or 5 other speakers, you may be disappointed. Most lower to mid-level AVR's are rated for only two channels driven (some only one!). They can lose 30 - 50% power when attached to a full host of surround speakers. NAD is pretty good about giving full power specs on ALL speakers driven and leave some headroom. Arcam and Anthem are also very good. I hope I am not discouraging you, just stating what I know and experiences are. Good luck and congratulations on your purchase. You will love the BMR's once you have them comfortably dialed into your space. Check back in with me once you have 50+ hours on them and your impressions. Best regards.

@@Simplyveej Well, I have not heard the BMR Towers and their purported sub 30hz bass, I can imagine piano and pipe organ music really hit with the Towers. When it comes to symphonic, orchestral music, I have not heard better below $7,500 than the Vienna Acoustic Beethoven Baby Grand SE. As a general observation with all the speakers I've owned and or reviewed, finding one that acquits orchestral and rock exceptionally well is a difficult ask. I would probably lean towards trying the BMR Towers first in your case - if you have a large space, the BMR Towers have the output capability for both genres. If you spend more time with symphonic music, I would say VA Baby Grand. At the end of the day, you are not tied to either for life, and honestly, you win because both speakers are pretty special.

Greetings Jeff. Its very simple from my perspective. I review a speaker for its build quality, frequency range capability and if it gets the job done on its own merits. I have a report card I keep for stand mounts that's ever evolving. If I have to integrate a sub and fuss with it, I'm not focused on the actual speaker at hand, and it detracts from the entire picture (for me anyway). Its not that it isn't easy for another subscriber to realize they should or shouldn't plan on a sub, I will mention this with some speakers, like the Sony M3 or Opera Grand Mezza. So, yes, no subwoofer in my system. Not today, probably not next year. :-) I do appreciate your questions though...keep 'em coming.

Its a good place to be, generally there are lots of choices, just not as much lately. My favorite speakers were bought second hand. No reason to pay for the depreciation if someone else is willing to trade up for the latest and greatest. For me, there are occasions where I have to pony up and buy new because I can never gauge when a pair will be available and in the condition I want it in. Vintage speakers are still awesome like my ADS L1590's.

Just a small suggestion coming for someone who has read, listen and view many speakers on RU-vid and many media. I think this review is too long. You can shorten it and still make your points, you can take whatever you like it is your channel after all. Good luck. BTW my friends built the above speaker lookalike ie using ribbon, tectonic and 6-7" bass drivers. It sounded very smooth and really not my kind of sound, ie no life to it. I am not saying your speakers will sound similar.

I wonder, what's a problem to play some free music to give us a clue about the sound? Sure, we won't hear all details, but it's easy to get some first impression. I put into my BL everyone who only talks. To say something gives less truth than to play even via YT. To say something costs nothing. This is not a blame. This is a law of nature.

Looks like sand cap resistors in the crossover which are cheap junk.
@2ChannelListening
@2ChannelListening 2 года назад
Show me some non-DIY speakers under $5K that doesn't have sandcast resistors. I've seen sandcast resistors in product far more expensive than the BMR's. Yes, it would be nice to see a few mills resistors, it doesn't take that much away from profitability.

That's sad to hear. The kit allows you to upgrade all the components, I just assumed that they would be using decent stuff in the retail versions. The only issue with the kit is that its Ver 1.

What other stand mounts are you comparing them to? Maybe Dennis is more honest with stated measurements than most. The Dali Rubicon 2 and Sierra 2EX are all within that same range by 1db.

Eye of the beholder for sure, a nice Salk cabinet fixes some of that weirdness. I admit, in person, I wouldn't go with this cabinet, too glossy for my taste. Lots of other ways to improve the optics. However, the sound is rock solid!

If nobody has heard of them they would been impossible to sell without losing more than 50-60% of your money (At least). In this hobby you will die if you keep flipping gear and losing that kind of money. Stick to the tried and true....lose 20% and live to fight another day.

Turns out they are easy to sell and you will lose less money on these than other brands. Like the reviewer says they are difficult to find on the used market and when you do they are only a couple hundred dollars off. I bought a pair of the monitors and the longer I own them the better I like them. Just ordered a pair of the Towers. These are end game speakers for me. Of course it depends on what you like.

@michaelgrissom6103
@michaelgrissom6103 2 года назад
@@Ivy13276 I had a pair of VMPS RM 30 SII, Wharfedale Lintons, and KLH model 5's. The VMPS were getting old and the midrange drivers were starting to sound springy to me. So I was looking for something to replace them with. I tried the KLH and the Lintons. I liked the KLH better than the Lintons but others lean the other way. (The midrange is clearer and the bass sounded a little more natural than the Lintons to me.) I am very sensitive to midrange and voices. These little monitors sound better than the KLH to me with a wider variety of music. I would say they equal the VMPS in bass and have a more natural high end. The VMPS had the most natural midrange but I could not replace the drivers so they went to the speaker graveyard. I could have lived with the KLH but decided to try the BMR monitors intending to send them back. However after a couple days of listening I decided I was going to keep the BMR's and sell the other speakers. ( This is not what I wanted to do.) They just sound better to me on a wider veriety of music. This may have something to do with my electronics as well. I am using Luxman L 507ux and was ready to purchase a McIntosh Integrated amp because some reveiwers say there is a synergy with Mc and the KLH. But I never got to that. I have had these for 3 months now and the BMR's keep amazing me.
