Of use to readers, reviewers, and authors, this video is part one of answering viewer questions about Literary Analysis and Critical Reading.
Dr. Philip Chase, (‪@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy‬ ) and I share what we’ve learned about analyzing stories over the years. During the series, we will cover various topics, including story versus plot, narrative perspective, characters, setting and world building, symbols, tone and style, and themes. It is our hope that the tools and techniques we discuss will add enjoyment to people’s storytelling journeys and help advance critical reading skills.
This is part one of answering viewer questions... because there were a lot of questions.

Can you believe that we had so many questions that we had to divide this response video into two parts?! Well, actually, it might really be because our answers are so long . . . But still! My thanks to you, Nemesis, for this fun collaboration!

Thanks for the very helpful advice on all the questions! Starting with short stories sounds like a great idea-and a Neil Gaiman collection happens to be on my imminent TBR.

You are very welcome. If you look at the reading lists for a lot of undergraduate literature classes, they usually have a sampler or anthology of 'classic' short stories. Those short stories will typically have a lot of online resources that discuss and analyse them. I am not sure how many free online resources there are that will be available for Gaiman's work, although I know there are more than a few.

I’m helping my sister practice analysis because she’s starting her senior year this fall. I’ve been wondering how to help her practice analysis without forcing her to read entire books or longer/more complex articles. The short story idea is PERFECT. Thank you so much 😄. Also also … I guess I have to side with Dr Chase in the feud because I do write in my books 🫣🫣🫣

On the one hand, you are very welcome for the short story idea. I hope it helps. On the other hand... note taking in the margins... nooooooooooo. 😂

Yea, I just sort of naturally pause and think while reading. When I do this I'm not necessarily consciously analyzing the text on any sort of deeper level (although sometimes I am), I'm just, you know, thinking about it. Or emotionally processing it, or just being like, "hey, that was really well written," or whatever. Personally I've always found it a bit strange not to do this at least a little bit, but I dunno.

Taking a pause and letting what you read sink in, or just thinking a bit about it, is the start of analysis. After that it is all gravy.

@ACriticalDragon I would often try to zoom in to look for titles. And see some fancy editions. Hopefully, they made the trip successfully and didn't turn into The Books That Didn't Float. I did finally order David Keck's trilogy.
