A superb talk - incredibly well researched and sensitively articulated presentation of salient aspects of Guston's late painting. The particular strength of this lecture is Godfrey's ability to explain the fundamental difference between art methodological approaches and those of art institutions: the artist works with a simultaneously multilayered discourse around formal and political issues - the Institution conforms to reduce this to binary thinking; to fit in with mass cultural understanding and demand for meaning. The comparison between Guston and Kara Walker at the end of this talk exemplifies this with beautiful precision.
