Originally a candidate for the priesthood, he fell in love with the writings of Sartre and discovered freedom, around which his thinking still revolves today.

In the beginning for him was freedom: in the Catholic seminary he felt that he could not afford to make a misstep and depended on the favor of his superiors. When he fell in love with Sartre's writings it was all over for him, says the native Irishman: from then on his passion belonged to philosophy. He left the seminary and made an impressive career as a philosopher, culminating in professorships at elite universities Princeton and Australia's National University in Canberra. Freedom continues to fascinate him today. With his early experience of subjugation, he understands freedom today first and foremost as freedom from arbitrary rule: only those who belong to themselves are truly free. Barbara Bleisch meets the world-renowned philosopher for a conversation and asks about the political implications of his understanding of freedom, which former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero elevated to an election campaign slogan.
