I've heard this sung by baritones, tenors, sopranos, contraltos, and trebles. But there's something about this particular song that just seems to blossom with a countertenor's voice.
It was originally sung by a castrato, I think, and his-Farinelli’s-life was made into a movie with a counter tenor. I’m still trying to find the movie. You can find this song by two different counter tenors in full regalia, one a clip from the movie.

Dank Philippe Jaroussky wissen wir endlich, wie einst die Kastraten klangen. Er macht es mit seiner unglaublichen Technik, dennoch klingt es völlig anders, als wenn eine Frau es sänge. Für mich ist er sozusagen der wiedergeborene Carlo Broschi (Farinelli)! Jaroussky ist mindestens ein Mezzo, geht schon in den Sopran rein, unfassbar...
Mein Gott, einfach geniessen und schweigen können Deutsche nicht. Unbedingt soll man etwas unwichtiges und uninteressantes sagen. Vokalanalyse? Really?
