Its going to be as much about which missile/radar systems they can get their hands on than which Jets. As the truth is there are F-16's and then there are F-16's with really modern missiles and targeting radar to lock up Chinese jets in long BVR fights. The Rafale is great and powerful, but extremely expensive for the Philippines. They will most probably have to settle with light fighters, most probably the F-16, although the Gripen should be a more usable option. Thai Gripens declassed Chinese J-11 in an exercise in long range combat, and the current Gripen NG is far better. And the Gripen is made for operations from shorter runways, it could be scattered through the many islands the Philippines constist of, in case of a Chinese attack - the F-16 needs much better bases. But I agree that the US influence will be a major factor.
@The_ZeroLine
@The_ZeroLine 23 дня назад
Yup, it’ll be the F-16, but the Gripen makes so much more sense in terms of their needs (can land almost anywhere, huge tolerance to FOD which is the exact opposite of the F-16, can be rearmed and refueled by a crew of 4 conscripts with ordinary hand tools and so on and so). The dispersion aspect is especially important. That and I’m sure they don’t have any existing military runways that are in pristine condition, which is what the F-16 requires.

I don't know that the F-15 is actually twice the expense of the F-16, though I'm sure it is more expensive to maintain. Either way, the cost would not be the primary issue. A surprise, but delightful video to be sure. Knowing my country’s procurement has been fraught with corruption and lack of urgency when it comes to military modernization is concerning to say the least, its a snails pace. Especially, given its current circumstance and worsening situation with China it is appalling that procurement of modern systems for a credible defense has (and still is) taken such a long time. But regardless, in my opinion, ideally if the Philippines would truly pursue this then it could go 2 ways. For my two cents regarding this particular topic, I have been following the MRF acquisition program for years now and have come to conclude that if the Philippines wishes to leverage its existing EDCA sites with the US as its primary defensive grand strategic plan against China then the F-16 for its air force would be the most logical choice logistically and strategically speaking, given the F-16s wide availability of parts and unmatched supply-chain. Yet, if the Philippine Air Force would lean towards having more agency and autonomy in countering their air war with China; cooperating with American units in a less dependent manner then I believe it should go with the superior platform which is the Gripen E. The Gripen E is particularly designed in fighting a defensive war against a foe that has superior strength in numbers and field significantly more fighter aircraft. The Gripen E is able to gain a better advantage by giving better situational awareness from both sensor and data fusion. E model houses an array of both active and passive sensors, and uniquely has a dedicated electronic warfare system that is made more for very contested air spaces and A2/AD spheres. Not to mention that the Swedish doctrine of smaller dispersed air bases highly fits the Philippines given its archipelagic and dense environments, thou it is doubtful they invest in this now given the largely conventional air base set up it currently has.

@@sethvanast8323 As in so far with the Navy, this branch has seen a fair bit more (relatively) improvements in the recent years in terms of capability and the widening of mission sets it is able to do. Despite this, it is too little and nowhere close to be being identified as meeting a "credible defense" criteria. As common with the whole Philippine Armed Forces as a whole, it faces the same issues in the dire lack of budget. This therefore often forces the Navy to resort in piece-meal basis of acquiring assets for its fleet, instead of implementing a comprehensive fleet aquisition that would meet its current security needs. At the current trend aquisitions for major surface ships such as frigates are acquired at 2 platforms max in separate contracts, not only does this cause further delays but hinders a consistent fleet with designated classes that have their appropriate roles. So as it stands, the navy sorely lacks in capable warships able to patrol and maintain policing in the country's own EEZ. This deficit is clearly seen with China's almost free reign within Philippine waters with Philippine Navy unable to enforce with its ships (for fear of inciting and losing its few valuable assests) and the Philippine coast guard unable to respond in equal power to the CCG. Further projects are in the works for deterence such as coastal missile batteries and more surface combatants, but undoubtedly it is still too few and slow. The current aquisition pace does not foresee a sizable force capable of witstanding a Chinese attack.

It should be mentioned that Thailand has been a long term user of the Gripen C/D. It recently participated in Exercise Pitch Black which saw Filipino F/A-50 jets go up against the Thai Gripens. Thailand has since also placed an order for new Gripen E/F jets, beating out the F-16. This has caused some worry in the Philippines as the Gripen is the fighter that was being favored by the PAF pilots. The concern is that Thailand's purchase of the Gripen will cause delivery times to be beyond what is acceptable if the Gripen is chosen. There have been proposals by Saab of initial leasing of already available Gripen C/D until the E/F versions can be delivered. This mirrors proposals similar to what Lockheed Martin has been offering to the Philippines with the purchase of the F-16 As for the KAI Boromae, Indonesia was actually a minor partner in the project with South Korea. Unfortunately, there were supposed leaking of trade secret information on the KF-21 by the Indonesian Engineering Group while participating in Korea on the project. That, plus Indonesia's defaulting on payments to S. Korea for the project may lead to Indonesia eventually leaving the project.

The Philippines should have a mix (while it may be more logistically difficult) of hi-lo-trainers with Gripens, Vipers, and F-50s. Gripens have the latest in tech, armaments, and can be an ironic (from how they are designed to be serviced by conscripts) elite force that can operate in constantly-repositioned austere air strips (so difficult to target) with minimal crew. F-16s form the bulk of missions and patrols and force presence, as they are more numerous and will have a stronger parts supply chain for flying more hours. But, tied to good airfields will make them easier to target. F-50s continue to be trainers. This is what Ukraine should do as well, should they get the money/aircraft now or….y’know…whenever Russia retreats and ends the war.

As usual, the US will likely muscle Saab and Sweden out of finally getting the overdue and purchases it deserves so well. The main obstacle for any country right now in building up an air force is that there is literally a years long cue for fast jet pilot training. The West and especially the US since it has so many customers is at literally around 10% of the necessary capacity for meeting pilot training demands. If the F-16C Block 52+ is loosing because SAAB offer the Gripen E/F in cheap price. I would be shock if the US offer the F-35A for cheaper than the actual price with certine modification to suit the PAF requirment. maybe it may turned into a 4.5+ gen F-35A only for PAF but that's not gonna happen. they may end up reduce the F-16 Block 70 Price than what they offer back then in order to beat SAAB. SAAb and Lockheed Martin is the only Competitor so far. KF-21 is not yet Multu Role Fighter as the PAF General saw. The Block 1 is a Air Suppiriority role and not yet in Multi Role. The KF-21 Multi Role may have to be the Block 2 which can do ground attack and Anti Surface role or Block 3 with internal weapons bay but that would be in 2030, and PAF want a MRF now as soon as possible. They also now a bidding competition for MLRS program, South Korea Hanwha Defence Chunmoo K239 MLRS, Israel Elbit System PULS MLRS and US Lockheed Martin with it's famous HIMARS MLRS.

If you are to take the Philippines' requirement for a multi-role aircraft that can also strike against maritime targets, the JAS 39 Gripen is the obvious choice. Philippines are most likely getting the 10 F-16C and 2 F-16D Block 70, deal has already green light from the US. no Gripen c is free and with Sweden and Brazil together have 100 Gripen E of the Swedish production that "can" hit max between 20-25 per year, however its hasn't been running at that rated so far, but its looks like they are offering India 20-25 jet per year deal, if India takes that deal any other order are unlikely on till 2027-ish. so with 130 Jaguar M/S and 127 Mig-21 running out of time, the Tejas 32 + 180 on order will not cover that fleet fast enough and Rafale end of production has push back two years to 2035 to fulfil standing orders, so 50 Gripen E is India best option and leaving Philippines in the cold. however Philippines smart move would be 10 F-16C/2 F-16D Block 70 and 32 Gripen E and 6 Gripen D main fleet 10 F-16V(C) 32 Gripen E 12 FA-50 Training Fleet 2 F-16V (D) 6 Gripen D 3 S-211 19 SF-260 6 EMB-314

The Philippines really needs to prioritize anti-shipping capabilities when deciding what fighters to buy. In that realm there's basically two choices: the Super Hornet and the Rafale. Considering Boeing's issues with quality control lately, I'm not sure I'd trust the Super Bug to perform as needed, so the Rafale might be the safer choice. The F-16's an option too but those are on back order with Ukraine and several European countries already having some earmarked for them, so those would likely be delayed. If they want something like the F-16 that may be more readily available, there's always the Gripen.

The problem with the F16 is that it's the *least* capable of performing the air defence and anti-shipping roles. The Gripen and Rafael both do it better, and cheaper than new build F16. An option that would be price competitive and give them strong long range area air defense and anti-shipping/strike capability would be the F15EX.
@mowgli2071
@mowgli2071 23 дня назад
@@iatsd that's not true at all. F-16 is very good for air defense. And Grippen simply does not have the range that the F-16 has. Range is king in the pacific. Nor do any of the fighters that you're going to mention have the data link capability that the F-16 has. The Philippines will most likely be using American ordinance for anti-ship and anti-air missions. An American platform interfaces with such ordinance more seamlessly than a non-US platform. And then there's the satellite interface. Sweden simply can't match the American satellite network. Nor does it have the parts train or experience pool that the F-16 has. Belgium, Greece, Denmark, Norway, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, and Israel have all flown the F-16 longer than the Grippen has existed. And then there's Argentina, South Korea, and Taiwan, and Singapore.

What about the Super hornet? It is American and very capable. It does have some advantages over the Viper such as twin engines, and a greater range and weapons load. It also has interoperability with both the Americans and the Aussies (both of which support the Philippines against the CCP, keeping the Super Hornet production going a little longer will benefit the USN, RAAF and PAF) and the proposed Block III variant is a 4.5 Gen fighter that is getting closer to 5th Gen than the other types. The Rafale, while very competent is more expensive than an F-35 and doesn't use American weapons. integration would be a problem.. Though I think the Gripen would also be a good candidate as it does have some integration with American (NATO) weapon systems. Sadly I think they will end up with Vipers, Whilst years ahead of what they have aren't as advanced as the Super Hornet and Gripen.
