Let's take a look at a cool radio sent to me from Belgium. I figure out how to convert it to run on 120v and give it a "clean and lube" to improve its performance.

Omg cuberdons :) Ingrediënts are: gum Arabic, glucose, water, gelatine and raspberry flavor. You see them a lot in here Belgium. I only can eat a few of them because they are so sweet :)

Very ingenious way to have two voltages supported, without it being an easily tripped switch. Probably in the end turned out to be cheaper to just hard-wire in one type of voltage in the end, or for small devices like this just having them be multi-voltage.

Hey Adrian. Those are a real treat. They are a specialty to some regions here in Belgium and you just got the real deal. Yes, be careful with your condition but do not leave them too long because they do not have preservatives.

There are different formulations of DeOxit (and other manufacturers) for _contact_ and _controls_ cleaning. Use the one for _controls_ on pots. Some cleaners also can damage the base material that some rotary switches and pot carbon tracks are mounted on, so using the right one is a wise idea. The carbon bar antenna would be used for all the AM bands and it's directionally sensitive. In my basement/shop I can turn a radio 90 degs and go from full power to nothing on an AM station. As for that radio, I am betting that the entire sub-chassis that the PCB is mounted on comes out with the dial. Otherwise it would be impossible to manufacture it. Nice radio, I have a few old Phillips units, several are tube era and they always impress me as to their build quality, ease of repair and audio tone. Cheers,

D5L is 5% Deoxit and 95% flushing agent. D100L is 100% Deoxit. I use D5L on pots and switches but use the D100L on connectors like headphone jacks/plugs. Then use G100L to protect from oxidation.

Ah, a shortwave radio. I bought an up-converter for my SDR last week. It’s a lot of fun listening to shortwave. I managed to pick up Radio Habana Cuba. I didn’t expect to pick up Cuban stations. In fact, I’ve counted at least 3 Radio Habana Cuba on shortwave. WMRI out of Miami also has several frequencies. That network broadcasts multiple programs for several countries (Czechia, Argentina, Russia, China among others). I can pick up a religious station out of Simi, California, but it’s rather weak. Another station I can get is out of Maine, and a Spanish language Catholic station out of Birmingham, Alabama. The Canadian stations are rather weak (least for me on shortwave). Unfortunately on AM, 990 from Winnipeg gets drowned out by 980 out of KC here. You may be able to pick up CBC out of Vancouver, but the Cascades may not help with shortwave or AM in your area. I wonder if I could pick up something further than Havana.

I recently picked up a Grundig short wave radio. When I was a kid living overseas we used to listen to a lot of Short Wave radio stations. Now I live in Houston and there really aren't any state side anymore. I've been trying to find them, but most are very staticy and very religious if I can find them. From my research, most of the ones that transmitted in America have all gone digital now. It's really sad that they've shut all that down. Every now and then late in the evening I can pick up Cuba. You have to try different times of the day, I bet early morning you could maybe get China on the west coast.

U-121 was a long-lived Type IIB U-boat built during World War II for service in Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. U-121 spent the entire war as a training vessel and was scuttled at the end of the conflict. Apparently, the untold tale is that U-121 was salvaged after the war and turned into Phillips radios.

Back in the day (1980's) in the UK, there would be harmonics on the LW dial from the MW (AM/Broadcast) dial. I think that is what you are hearing there. I have always been fascinated with radio from a kid. How could something so cheap and simple pick up speech and music from all over the World ? Even today, if I was stranded on a desert island, I would always make sure I have an old transistor radio with me...

The FM broadcast system in Europe is slightly different from the one used in the US, the different pre-emphasis for example results in a lesser-treble sound. Also the AM is somewhat narrower in Europe, so it might have a good tune-up :-) by the way, till the early eighties the FM band on radios only reached to 104 Mhz

FYI, to get some good shortwave attach a good length of wire, at least 20 feet, you will be what you get. Do keep in mind be up stairs away from major power lines.

Don't think the signal strength is usually as good, but you can partially replicate a different length of antenna with either inductors (longer antenna I think?) or capacitors.

Before computers, it was geeky cool to be into radio. We all played with radios, some of our own construction. I got a really great 10-band radio for Christmas one year! That thing was a blast. It got me interested in foreign languages - listening to Europe. So now I'm illiterate in 4 languages! :) We learned about antennas, how to get licensed, Morse code, etc. That's why they called it Radio Shack!

In the early eighties, I had a radio with all the same dimensions. I forget the number on my radio. Perhaps it was a 679(?). The USA has never had regular broadcasting on long wave, so my radio had AM (MW), two shortwave bands, and FM (88-108). I would use the local oscillator in another radio to hear CW and SSB signals. That radio had been made shortly after Phillips acquired Magnavox. My radio had the Magnavox brand. Addendum: I never realized that my radio was dual voltage, until now!

At this stage Philips did a lot of outsourcing in Asia. Earlier 1976 models were made by Philips in Singapore. This model though I am sure was made by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (National Panasonic) It has almost identical styling to their own range.

I have same model.It's first year when they moved production from Holland to Singapore. You have 3 screws up and 3 down on battery level when you remove back cover. There r 2 more in the upper part that holding the scale. No need to remove them. I was able to detach front panel that way.I would send you screenshots but YT wont let me leave the links here. I need to go through my Panasonic RF-1600 one of these days. It's actually a mid-60s radio; I certainly thought it being newer, more like mid-late 70s. It is easily one of the best performing radios I have.

The FTZ sticker is the German equivalent of the FCC approval. Many radios sold in Europe in the 1970s and 1980s had this.

Here in the US all you are really going to get on Long Wave is utility stations (morse code beacons and other non-voice signals) so yes, what you were getting on longwave was probably just bleed over from AM. Longwave isn't really used for commercial broadcasts or voice transmissions here.

All those consumer devices had superior builds and excellent parts. My 10-band was a marvel! How I longed to understand how it worked in detail! Alas I got sidetracked into physics and math and had to leave electronics behind! But notice how nice the throw switches are - very nice parts throughout. BTW check the speaker for rot. Could be part of the audio issue.

These old high quality Japanese capacitors rarely go bad in such low voltage circuits, except for the mains power supply.

Not to bore you but one more thing - I'm pretty sure the whole works with the pulley system etc. comes out without any issues involving the pointer thread. Remember this had to go together on a line, assembly must have been straightforward, and so disassembly. I never saw a single example of a radio with an inverted dial! Also - it is very important for shortwave to have a semi-proper antenna of the right length - say a 1/4 wave in length. I had a long wire stretching from my bedroom to a pine tree near the edge of the front yard, about 60 feet :) And you won't get much during the day in some shortwave bands - because long-distance transmission depends on the state of the ionosphere, which changes as the Sun is up or down.

The dial being out of alignment can probably be fixed by adjusting some of those IF cans, but I wouldn't try it without a manual.

just remember that only ITU Region 2 (the Americas) and Australia (of Region 3) use the "extended" AM band from 1620-1710 kHz...ITU Regions 1 (Europe/middle east/Africa) and Region 3 (Asia, Oceania, everyone else) don't really use it... a couple of European stations have experimented with using 1620-1710, but I'm not sure if that's used on a full-time basis. The other regions also use 9 kHz channel spacing, compared to Region 2's 10 kHz spacing... which might explain why the reception range is "shifted" a bit.. it's probably designed to pick up 531-1610 Khz, instead of 530-1710 kHz... it's also a pity that the longwave band (180-279 kHz) was never used here... though I suppose it serves the same purpose for Europe as our extended AM band does...

For screws, I ended up picking up some of those medical pill holders, the ones with 7 containers for people who have to take different medication each day of the week. They the right size for most screws you'd encounter in most electronics. There are exceptions (I'm looking at you, BBC Master system) but they're cheap! I tend to put them in to containers in order I disassemble them from the system. Makes it easy to put them back in.

Planned obsolescence was institucionalized and received government incentive I think, people got gready and there is a limit on how much money you can make selling stuff that lasts one or two lifetimes, specially when the well made stuff was somewhat easy to service by the user. People like things to be as cheap as possible and steered the market this way... That is why quality is mostly tied to "premium" stuff, you pay more the companies have incentive for making stuf that lasts longer

I used to have one of these back in 1982. The reason the sw doesn't work well, is probably due to someone trying to extend the frequency of the fm band and moved the sw varycap trimmer by mistake. The fm only went to 104.5 mhz.

The FTZ was the German equalant to the FCC. The Sticker is for the registration of the device. There is no English Wikipedia Article about the FTZ

Nice shortwave man. I been rebuilding a Haĺlicrafters S-38 from the 40s, but it doen't have FM. Tubes though, mmmm tubes. String up 53' of wire, put a 9:1 unun on the near end, and then clip the other side of the unun to the antenna. I don't think you'll need a counterpoise, but I may be wrong. Ought to be able to pick up stuff from about anywhere but Australia on that.

I don't know whether the FM band on the radio is also shifted or not, but if it is, then it is possible on purpose. In these day's there was an pager system around 87.5 MHz. If your radio could receive below that frequency, it was (more or less) possible to listen to the police. Some shifted the range on their radio to make it possible. Police is now digital and coded, so listening is impossible.

3:45: FTZ-U: that's the registration number at FernmeldeTechnischesZentralamt, the German FCC equivalent from 1949 to 1989. (so it does not help a lot in dating the radio)

In a number of countries such as here in Australia and in the UK and parts of Europe, they use 9 Khz stepping on AM whereas you guys use 10 Khz stepping, I also understand that as of the 90s you have an extended AM band, which I don't think other countries have, that might potentially explain some of the issues you have on AM. Nice radio too, I like old radios like that one.

Ok ok one more! I looked in the 1975 Sears Christmas catalog and a 6-band radio cost $70, which is $340 in modern money! Americans once didn't mind paying for quality items. It's as if more pride went into making such things, and it was priced accordingly.

The radio needs a realignment. and the only way you can do it is with a RF generator. And knowing witch adjustment is what. a full schematic would help and back in the day of tube radios you could get a alignment procedure.

AM and shortwave the in states have become a hive of religious and conservative talk with several stations mirroring their broadcasts to both bands. As the FCC relaxed the licensing requirement to allow one media out let to amass licenses on all bands (used to be illegal), those with the money can broadcast where ever they can afford.

FTZ is the abbreviation for "Fernmeldetechnisches Zentralamt", the central german administrative authority for technical regulation of (radio) communication and approval of such devices.

You beat me to it. Goold old German "Behördendeutsch". ;-) It can best be compared to the FCC in the United States. Back in the day it was mandatory to have those stickers to indicate that tis is an approved device that doesn't cause any interference.

I don't think Long Wave was ever used in North America. Every radio I've ever had with Long Wave was completely dead, except for sometimes so AM stations leaking through as you found.

It looks like 104 is just the last one printed. I'll bet it goes to 108, which is the standard most places.

It's an old radio. In Europe the FM band was extended on two occasions. First from 100 MHz to 104 MHz and then all the way up to 108 MHz. If I remember correctly, the first station above 104 MHz went on air here in Sweden in 1993.

@@testcardsandmore1231 There was a reason for that. Early FM radio designs had quite significant local oscillator radiation, the oscillator runs (typically) 10.7MHz above the receiving frequency. They didn't want to have that all over the air band (which starts at 108MHz for NAV, and ~118MHz for COM), so they left a gap. As the designs improved (and the regulations on spurious emmisions in RX mode got stricter), extending the band became possible.

Hi Adrian, I'm thinking if it is possible that the unshielded Commodore 64 can send any short wave at maybe 3.58 Mhz. BTW cool video.

The antenna might be the original one. You just need to actually extend it so it clips on the other side of the radio.

It most definately is not the original antenna, my brother replaced it with one he had lying around after the original broke.

Any time i hear the word "Transistor radio", the Van Morrison song "Brown Eyed Girl" gets stuck in my head And whatever happened To Tuesday and so slow? Going down the old mine with a Transistor radio
