I kept saying 1st Generation when I meant 2nd! The first generation units used CDM0 mechanisms with tape deck type motors; the CDM1 is better IMHO. CDM2s were a more budget plastic bodied version and had a few reliability problems. The CDM4 is also a good mechanism as used on the Rotel RCD855. After the CDM4 quality generally went down hill except for the expensive CDM9 which was a revival of the CDM1 in many ways.

Last week I found a cd104 in my local second hand shop. Since then I am reading about the player. I even discovered your channel! I owned more than 10 cdplayers, but this one is something special. Mine have up after 10 CDs, not reading CDs at all. But I will fix it hopefully 😊 Please continue tips and tricks about this beautiful machines!

I will never part from my modified CD104. I have serviced and modified many of this type of player. Not sure what I can do a video on next (maybe on common problems or how to modify).

@@delatronics3257 such a video would be great. There are one or two videos on this topic but they are in German or Russian. "How to repair your best cd player ever-for beginers" 🙂

@@tombill2723 I am not involved with CD players anymore (I have reopened my business for electronic musical instruments). There are plenty of vídeos about how to do the NOS mod here on RU-vid and on line; the NOS mod will do wonders for the sound.

I never thought id see a "brazil" made CD 204. I live in Argentina, and i have an early production sample from 1984. Only a few were imported due to the high costs. But they are built like tanks. Mine was very abused and it wasn´t taken care of. But after changing all the philips capacitors, it came back to life. If you check the voltage regulators they say "BRASIL" on top, very cool.

I may sell my serviced 204 soon and just keep my 104.

This player is of a earlier generation, compaired to the cdm2 and 4 i work on on a regulair almost weekly basis. A word of warning here: You should check and service the laser power supply, and the servo systems first, before making any ajustments at all !!! In my experience as a professional audiotech, it was very seldom that laserpower needs a adjustment. Most of the time the root cause is something else. Dried out electrolitics in servo and lasersupply are the main culpritt on the cd players equipped with cdm2 and 4, and i can imagine it be the same here. The bearing adjustment however i already came across that problem in the mid 90 ties. So yes, always check that. The lightblue caps in these and later generations are all way out off spec by now, so a full service should be done. Enjoy these nice machines, and indeed, a masterclock is always a very nice upgrade.

Thanks for your comment, I agree 100% but this video is aimed for the non Technical person. I too have done a lot with later generation and been in audio electronics for more than 35 years.

Perfect! I had a CD104 and had chatted with you years ago. Now you've revealed what the issues were! Does the CD304 have digital out?
@delatronics3257
@delatronics3257 3 месяца назад
No, all TDA1540 DACs don't support digital output (the TDA1541 does support it). I am coming back to the UK next month and will begin servicing when I have a premises in October.

Hi Master! Ph. CD304 mk1. (CD104 dac/servo boards) but this has CDM-0 mech. (metal plate, brushed motor) origanal CD 75min/21track 18-20th tracks often skippings and 21st mostly not read at all....and im hearing ?the focus? give rhythmically louder noisy to end. Can its be a same problem? (for history: everything was moved: -i need to grab out all from chassis, for IEC connector installation's metal works)

@@szabolcskiraly1166 yes, seems like the Torx screw adjustment for turntable height should work.

@@delatronics3257 Problem solved THX ! In case of CDM-0 ure need 4mm wrench for lock nut, and 1 mm allen key to set crew. The set screw thread is more finer: instead of 1/8, ure need to turn 1/2 or 3/4 to good results. (of course my 1mm allen key nowhere find.... backup plan: T6 torx)

Is the TDA1540 DAC better sounding than TDA1541? and by the way, this CD looks much like my old Philips CD 350
@delatronics3257
@delatronics3257 Месяц назад
@@virgogreg Yes in my opinion the 1540 being two separate mono blocks one for left and one for the right chanel, the 1541 is a stereo DAC and is built down to a price. The 1541 is a good DAC (especially so with NOS removed) and has the advantage of being able to have a digital output, but sheer musicality and an organic quality makes the 1540 shine for me.

People don’t have a clue. You need an oscilloscope and put cd players in service mode and adjust to spec. Done many years of repairs in cds, laserdisc and video, etc. these videos on here are a joke and don’t have a clue what they are doing. What you are doing is messing it up more to failure. What a joke.
@delatronics3257

I have personally set these up with an analogue scope but the vast majority of amateurs and tinkerers don't possess scopes. In my experience, as long as you keep away from the trimpots and just tweak the turntable height on a CDM1 mechanism; function can be restored without damage to the laser or mechanism. Not many technicians are available or are willing to repair these old machines, so they end up sitting in storage and out of use until a solution can be found in an experienced engineer with all the necessary equipment. You are obviously being critical of my video which is your perogative, perhaps you have some more technical videos on your channel to help people out; but my guess is that that info would go over most people's heads...Or maybe you are a troll!
