Lol yes I jumped when it came on. I love that moment when a radio bursts into life and you know you’ve done it! This one has been a bastard all the way.
excellent work, and video! this is what we can call "courage"! I so strongly dislike Philips products, I gave up trying to revive them (especially the tape recorders, horrible stuff). I only kept a big Reverbeo which happens to work, don't know why...Ah, Grundig, Schaub Lorenz, Telefunken, Siemens! these I like! Bravo, Don!
Hi Andre. Yes Philips are always difficult. The Nordmende I worked on recently was a dream to work on by comparison. Sadly German radios are rare and expensive here in Australia and I haven’t yet found another one to restore.
I did think of that but fishing line is so slippery to deal with and this is a bastard of a dial cord. I’ll give it a try if my .5mm dial cord doesn’t arrive soon.
Radio is great thanks Don, it was a great journey for me and magic effort from you to bring it back to life.I think the 2nd world war did have a big part in the short wave section being removed. CHEERS DOM
Hello again Don. You did very well with this set. I would have put money on you getting serious problems with the I F transformer coils, but thankfully you got away with it. These are usually gummed up or seized, and break very easily when you try to move them. Why Philips persisted on using these I will never know. The replacement speaker sounds really good especially on FM. Replacing the two valves to get the FM working was a spot of luck, at least you didn't have to take the FM can apart. Great stuff as always. Cheers Chris.
A difficult job well done. A struggle all the way through due to Philips and their ways. And to top it off a dial re-string. But you stuck with it. Hope your new dial cord turns up and fixes that last snag.
Great to see you got it working. I have to admit I didn't envy you having to refit a dial string without a diagram. 😅 It's always a fight to repair a Philips radio, but once you get them working they can sound really great.
Hi Kristof. I agree they are great sounding radios when you get them working properly but I think I have had a battle with every Philips I’ve worked on. This one might be the last Philips I do for a while. By the way I’m enjoying your channel and subscribed. You do very good quality videos. Thanks!
@@Donno308 Thanks a lot for the compliments. I'm still learning to improve my videos. And I also subscribed to your channel. I only restored one Philips so far (a Siera SA1022U) and I haven't had many complications other than it being very cramped inside. I guess I was lucky.
Hi Don, Philips strikes again! When I have to replace a speaker the Jaycar "Responce" car speakers work really well. They make them in 4, 5, and 6 inch sizes. Much better than the cheapies!
Hi Don, another success I know what you mean about Philip's, they do have some intriguing design ideas I think it's that Edam cheese. Looking forward to the next one
Philips were not the only ones who switched off the FM valve HT when turned to AM. Surely they must have known about the cathode poisoning that would result. Anyway, I'm glad that a new pair of valves sorted it as I suspected it might.
It seems like a silly idea to me but it would probably be ok if you used FM occasionally. Maybe they weren’t aware of it or didn’t see the radios lasting so long.
Nice job Don your Philips keeps fighting, but your winning. At 29:11 I heard chicken noises but on secant thought it was the dial string. One never knows about a radios quarks or maybe its only your viewers.
Ooow david tipton may try to steal your smashing radio . Philips used to make some odd configurations, if they made a reel to reel it's likely that one valve did two jobs, if it failed you lost everything. Mind you, that was millions of years ago lol.
Hi Jim. It’s a matter of what is available. I live on the West coast of Australia and there is nothing available locally. I order my parts from a business in Eastern Australia and they have a limited range. So the 600V caps are all I can get unless I order from overseas and wait ages (and pay a fortune) for delivery. By the way I enjoy your videos and subscribed to your channel. All the best!
@@jimburns348 600V cap's are virtually the same price as the lower voltage so we get what we can get down here. :). Everything seems pretty tough these days when doing restores.
