The better way to compare the two would be shaving the left side of your face with one and the right side of your face with the other. That way, you can actually compare the number of passes each trimmer takes. The way you did it, it made the solo look better than it is in my opinion because you used the one blade to get the heavy hair and the solo to finish it. Both look decent though it sounds like the one blade is more powerful.
When they suggest going against the grain, don't push the razors up your cheek, pull them with the handle facing up. Note how well they worked when the hairs were entering the handle side of the razors.
That bothered me so much...like... don't go over the part you just did and negate any results! You will never see a difference if you keep going over it. Terrible testing method. Just sick to one side per razor
This was a most insightful review. I purchased a Micro Touch Solo and was sorely disappointed. First off, I found that it pulls excessively on your beard. As a result, it was too painful to use! Next, which this video pointed out, is the fact that it is only used for dry-shaving. Although I had nothing to compare it to, I also found the motor to be somewhat slow. Certainly, based on this review, I will take a chance and purchase the Philips Norelco OneBlade. I believe the advent of being able to use shaving gel and/or water, will make the world of difference. Many thanks for this great review!
@Freaky Behavior seems your beard is too gentle if you are shaving twice a week. Try to shave head and you will see how unpleasant it is after 2 shaving
I have the One Blade and it does work quite well. Beards, neck, manscaping (TMI, I know), The Costco pack includes an insane amount of different guides and 3 blades so I can dedicate a blade for X use. I honestly have not tried to use my shaving balm with it yet (didn't even think about it but now that he says it seems better, I think I will give it a shot.
I've been looking at these, I had my doubts about how close they could shave as I use a butterfly razor with replaceable safety blades so I'm used to a very smooth shave. My wife doesn't like stubble on my face when I visit certain 'places' so a close shave is vital. This video will be interesting.
You used both razors to shave over the same spots once the hair was removed so how can you accurately gauge which one had the closer shave? The shaving was just everywhere, just inconsistent
I've had both of these and hated the Norelco. I bought it first because of the more "brand name" aspect of it. The difference you're hearing between the motors is not strength of motor but the frequency it works at. I noticed in your video that with the Norelco you had to go over the same spot twice to get as clean of a shave as the MicroTouch did in one pass, which is why I hated the Norelco when I owned it. It's wasted time to have to shave the same spot twice to remove hair at that level. I've used the MicroTouch Solo to shave my face and head for 2 years and have never had to replace the blades. I shave my head about twice a week and my face every other day. I'm self-employed so I'm not required to shave daily. Even if I use a regular razor I just splash some water on my face and go to it so being able to use the Norelco with shaving cream doesn't justify paying the extra $10.
Hey there, you said that you did not require to change the blades with the solo for 2 years, are you serious!? What about the norelco, did you have to change it every four months ?
@@luizmotta2844 Only if you used one of the guards but that won't be short enough. They say you can't knick yourself with the Microtouch or the Norelco but you definitely can. You could use the guard to get the thick hair out of the way and then use a regular razor. Regular old disposable razors do the job there but you have to be careful, of course.
Thank you so much for this review my husband wants one for Christmas and I had no clue which one to get since there is literally hundreds out in the market, I am going with the Phillips Norelco one Blade, you have made it easy, thanks again.
Just watching you, it looked like the solo required less passes and was more quiet. As an owner of the solo, I generally recommend it, but do not try to take the combs off and on. You will break both the comb and head if you do. It's better to buy an extra head and swap between one that has the comb on it and one that does not.
Replacement blades for the MicroTouch SOLO are less than $4.00 each on eBay. $3.44 each. But I have seen them as high as $5.00. So if 2 blades for the Norelco OneBlade are $25.00.....the MicroTouch is the way to go by far! You can get 6 MicroTouch blades for the price of only 2 Norelco blades! Also, the MicroTouch has a quieter motor, that's not any less powerful than the Norelco. The Norelco is not stronger. Just noisier! I have them both. The MicroTouch shaves better and is sharper in my opinion. It also stays on longer than the Norelco does. By 6 minutes. My vote goes to the MicroTouch SOLO. Just a better deal, a better price, and much, much, much cheaper blade replacements than the Norelco! The Norelco can get wet, while the MicroTouch can't. So if shaving in the shower is a must...the Norelco is your best bet. I don't have to shave in the shower. But when I do, I have a Gillette Mach 5 for that, that I leave in there. When I'm just doing touch ups, or morning shaves at the sink, I use my MicroTouch. I gave the Norelco to my roommate. Too noisy for me, and vibrates a lot. Well....there's my opinion. Good luck to you all. :)
I’ve personally invested heavily financially and practically in shaving. Here’s what I’ve found based on years of experience looking for shave I want. (I want the smoothest quick shave without getting ingrown hairs or irritation.) 1) Annually, with daily shaving, the Oneblade will cost the same as buying the Braun Series 9 with cleaning cartridges replacing the cleaning cartridge solution every 19 cycles (I took over two weeks to count exactly how many cycles until the light turns on.) 2) The Philips Norelco OneBlade doesn’t provide the closest shave when “close” is defined by the length of hair protruding from the skin. However, “smoothness” I have found the OneBlade can provide (with extra work) a shave nearly as smooth as a Double Edge Safety Razor. This is all from my experience, not the opinions of others. 3) Using Leftric Shave or another electric pre-shave will make this even smoother. If your goal is the closest shave, the Gillette Fusion 5 should be the winner because it will cut under the skin, but that’s a problem. Cutting under the skin produces ingrown hairs. Don’t get me wrong, the experience of taking a warm shower followed by shaving against the grain with a new Gillette Fusion 5 ProGlide using the Gillette Fusion ProGlide Sensitive 2 in 1 Shave Gel is AMAZING. (Assuming you didn’t break out in ingrowns the next day.) But you know, like I do, that those sharp, amazing shave experiences don’t last very long on those blades. In my experience, the way to get an oil-covered baby butt dish soap lathered slip and slide smooth shave is using a double-edge safety razor. The best part is you don’t get breakouts. It takes time to learn, but I go against the grain nearly everywhere on its face every time I shave and am never disappointed by blade performance. Double edge safety razors are much sharper, profoundly cheaper, and easy to learn.
Finding replacement heads on Amazon is a big deal when it comes to convenience. The micro touch solo does not sell replacement heads on Amazon. That's something you should definitely mention in the review.
Love my OneBlade. Absolutely hate shaving, hated it in the military, always had issues with discomfort during daily use and nicks until I used the OneBlade with shaving cream. I can use it every day with no problem.
Thanks for the review. Didn't want to wait for shipping and saw the Norelco at the local Wally Mart. Kind of a no brainer decision anyway as Norelco has been in business as long as I can remember and I am 64. Have an old triple head rotary that still works good and it must be 30 years old. It's just too big for trimming. Guess I know where I'm going shopping tomorrow.
One thing about the One Blade is that its charge "has to" last a lot longer then 45 minutes. It might be worth testing because that thing can go multiple months without needing a charge even though it's used every day or two. Also it's blade just doesn't seem to go dull, and when you replace the blade thinking "Maybe it is, It's been like 8 months..." they feel the same as the old one.
Dereck Sheppard I wouldn't say that it can multiple months without charging ! But it's true for the blades, the new ones feel just like the old ones (also they recommend to change them every 4 months if you shave regularly, I shave once a week so I can keep them much longer)
One blade I stared at it for at least a year. Finally bought one and I use Safety Razors. I’m old fashioned cuz it’s hard to beat a good badger brush and a safety. Finally bought mine last Friday they aren’t expensive. The one blade became my new favorite toy. It’s not perfect but it does a lot of things well and it’s not expensive to buy. Absolutely worth playing with. I love mine.
After having a huge debate with myself, decided to give OneBlade a try. I just tried it and honestly It was the best shave EVER after trying numerous trimmers and shavers. I need to emphasize that using one blade with the foam is a must in my opinion(makes the process much FASTER and SMOOTHER), otherwise, I couldn’t find it useful for dry shaving. But that’s my personal preference and might be different for someone else. As far as closeness of the shave, it’s pretty similar to electric razors that I used before and I think it’s because I used it with foam. I just hope this piece lasts and the blades don’t get dull after just a couple of uses. Hope this is helpful, Good Luck!
Thanks for the comparison. Despite the Norelco motor sounding stronger, the Solo seemed to do better on the 1st pass...at least 2 times. You may prefer the Norelco, but I think you were right: for dry shaves the Solo seems better.
I have the Philips 1 blade a year and a half now and still going strong. I love this unit since a suffer from razor burns from razors and electric shavers. While I haven't replaced my blade yet I know it is due, but I can still use the original blade it's just I no longer have that close shave when new. I shave every two to three days. I have not tried it wet yet. It has saved my face from painful rash/burns of that mean razor.
I’ve used the Philips Norelco one blade. Haven’t needed to charge it since I got it, which is odd. Other than that, I freakin love that thing. Gets in tight and the added bonus of it being able to shave in the shower is nice. Haven’t used it with shaving cream though🤔 should give that a look
Because of the One's blade cost, I'd always finish with a traditional razor. I have a foil Remington that will shave with cream, so would do that, since it's blade will last for years compared to a One being worn out faster with cream. I see some mixed reviews on the knockoff replacement blades for the Solo, but at much cheaper cost, it looks like they are serviceable.
Got the Norelco One Blade not for face shaving I have the Norelco triple head for that and am and have been for many many years. I'm older then you probable 2X's but needed to mans-cape. I use to use my regular trimmer but wanted a neater appearance. Got the OneBlade and found it did a nice job but as you get older you'll find you develop more wrinkles down below and still hard to get as clean a shave as your face/beard, but it works.
I use the one blade weekly and I can’t fault it. Only, I find using the top blade for the majority of shaving and trimming to work the Best. I Only charge it once a month and the wife uses it in the shower too. Only replaced the head once within 6 months. I haven’t used a razor in a while that I used to get shaving rash from. Very happy with the one blade top marks from me (and my wife) ;)
As a retired person I don't want to shave everyday so about every 4 days I wet shave with my one blade, if I am going out I use my one blade followed by my Gillette pro 5 blades to give me a smooth finish, so both my blades give me good life and keeps the cost down. Never new the cost of shaving was going to be so expensive the older I got.
I just bought the MicroTouch Solo and used it for about two days it does leave a about a day's worth of growth ie a little stubble. I will say going against the grain around the chain area is a little painful I think it pulls the hair in that area. With that said I still think its a good buy.
I have one of these for my 19yo Autistic son, he hates razors but tolerates this and though it doesn't get completely smooth it still helps my Son to not have a beard and it is fast to boot. We have used the same blade for 3 months! Though note it's time to change to a new refill... 😁
Great video. I have been shaving with shaving soap and a safety razor for three plus years now. Nothing works better for me. I bought a vintage razor for $20. Three years worth the blades for $12. And a years worth the soap for as little as $6.
The MicroTouch Solo's blade pivots on 2 very flimsy plastic tabs that break easily when switching shaving guides. Sometimes while switching guides the whole head came off resulting in a broken tab that resists super glue :-/ Maybe I didn't read the limited instructions properly but it broke within a few guide swaps.
When you used shaving cream with Oneblade, that was your 3rd or 4th pass on that side, then compared it to the other side which you had 2 passes at most. So, maybe that wasn't fair to Microtouch. Also, microtouch replacement blades are listed at $14 for a pack of 2 blades. I think you can use shaving cream with microtouch, but can't use it while in the shower. The fine print on NORELCO says blades will last up to 4 months based on 2 shaves per week. For some people who shave everyday that would last just 1 month. Cost difference of replacement blades become more significant.
Dave Smith how many times have you shaved though, a thick beard implies not very often. If you shaved everyday that would be a good idea of what to expect.
John Coe I shave every day. Just not my whole face. I shave my neck line and cheeks. If I shaved my whole face I would probably have to replace the blades more often.
I own both Microtouch and Oneblade and I use both to shave my head and while Oneblade feels and sounds more powerful ironically they both get the job done at the same time with the same results. The biggest advantage for microtouch is the replacement blades cost half as much as Norelco blades. Also, Microtouch has a red led while charging on the other hand I have no clue if oneblade is charging when I plug it in. But oneblade feels like better quality while holding in the hand.
Good point John, if he uses it just once a year or shaves just one square inch the blades might last him a decade or two. It's like when some folks talk about their car and fuel economy they say a tank of gas last them a whole month and I ask them how much do they drive or how big is their gas tank! My suburban has it's own gas station on a trailer in the back and i go to the gas station just once a year!
I personally have used both shaving tools. I personally use the one blade. I have to shave daily because of my facial hair growth. Having sensitive skin and shaving dry is horrible. When I trim my goatee I use the comb but it doesn't work well wet when trimming. I have had the one blade for nearly a year and I have changed the blade once. I'm not saying that the solo is a bad unit, but when you can't dry shave because of the sensitive skin, you do what you can. I am very happy with the one blade, using shave cream is as close to a standard blade that you can achieve. I use a single blade safety razor, the kind your father/grandfather used. I also about once a month use my straight razor. I can't find a decent barber that can use a straight razor out here in Vegas. The last guy I knew of and went to for nearly 16 years, has since passed away. I love a good shave with a straight razor. I have been lazy this week and I have double the growth that you cut off in your video. I'm still going to shave in the shower and keep on doing so until I find a better way. Until the day comes that something better than the one blade, that is where I will stay.
I've been wanting a Phillips One Blade for a while and this review has definitely made my mind up. You've got my sub for this, thanks for the informative review.
THANK YOU for demonstrating a razor on a hairy surface! Seriously it drives me nuts when razors are demonstrated on smooth hairless skin. One question as well. How well are the heads holding up after several months of use?
Im 6 seconds in and Im going to give my opinion right off the bat before I get into this video. The norelco has done some basically "wet shave" comparable shaves on my scalp. I only ever shave my head but this is the shortest shave Ive ever had.
Thanks for your reviews. I have experienced pretty much the same results you have been reporting I can't believe how close the One Blade actually shaves with out the use of any of the guards. Just about a month ago I discovered that Phillips has engineered a stealthy way to know when your blade is coming close for replacement I cant remember where I saw this information but it was probably here on youtube. Anyway, it said that the flat surface of he blade will start to turn green and when it has filled the entire area then it is time to change out. It seems to be pretty true to it's claim. When the green spot fills the width of the blade, it will be time to replace. The only issues I have with the One Blade is this: I can't seem to be able to find anywhere to buy replacement combs/guards. Also what is the deal with phillips making different charging ports. I think it shows up in the different models thar are available. The one that is green and black and the other is green with a silver or gray power button area. I have one of each and they both have different ports. I have to have the cord that came with it to charge. Lame Phillips. Anyone find a similar issue with the cords? Also, any workarounds or solutioss or ideas to overome this. My solution is to dissamble and swap out with the dead one I have. I hope tthis works.
What's the point of the Solo having a light if it's going to be situated behind the razor when it's on your face? Due to its placement, the light is always going to be trapped between your skin and the body of the razor itself.
In the past the 'Micro Touch' people have also added lights to some of their other products, and I just think they believe it's a popular feature, as well as something that can be found on their products possibly exclusively(?) which in their minds sets them apart from their competitors. Though I agree with you that that the light feature may not make that much sense, but I'm guessing that it probably also doesn't cost them a whole lot of money during production to manufacture the razor with that tiny light, so they do it.
as a "tech savvy guy" I'd say that the slower sounding solo could indicate a weaker motor, but there is also a possibility that they have equal motors, but the Micro has a different gear ratio, causing more torque. In that case, you would have to move the razor slower, but you would also have a more consistent cut on every pass. I think this is the case because the Micro always seemed to go straight through in one pass, while the oneblade would leave patches and you would need to cover more than once. Think like a lawnmower in grass that's too tall.
I just got the solo and I really like it for trimming my leg hair and armpit hair with the guards. The biggest problem I had with it is the first one I had the guards were broken so I snapped off mid use but after returning it and getting a new set it was great.
1) The difference in pitch is created by the speed of the cutting heads. The higher pitch means faster movement. 2) Stacy is correct. Pulling a razor is much more effective (efficient) than pushing one. 3) Clean your fingernails if you're going to do any hand close-ups (4:27, for example).
The one blade is a great product and to my black brothers buy it you won't get razor bumps after you use it if you want to use cream use bump stopper or this product called shave secret both work great you can get shave secret and bump stopper at Walmart shave secret will run about 3$bump stopper around 9$
ayoungboydev coochie cream works well too, cost $14ish for a 28oz bottle can use it anywhere on your body and lasts forever. Bought one bottle in 2016 and haven't needed another yet and I shave every other day(beard and head)
Hello! #Freakin' Reviews I realised that there are many different models of phillips one blade. qp2520,qp2530, qp2620, qp2630... Which one is the one you are using??
I've had both and the one blade is hands down a better razor. Much better shave and less irritating. Also the blades last much longer before getting to the point where they need to be replaced.
It usually takes a few charges to get the best out of rechargeable batteries. If there was a way to get rid of that light would help, lol. Phllips Norelco makes good stuff.I have a beard trimmer I've been using for over 7 years, still takes a good charge. Thanks for the Vid.
What !? This review is 2 years old, and he says he used the oneblade in the past. How old is this produkt (Oneblade) ? In Denmark we have only just heard about it 🤨
I use a plastic box to protect my one blade after i broke my first blade after one single use. I broke it while putting the blade in its protective case that come with it. I bought 2 more blades, one year ago and i still use the same blade.I use it with shaving cream. On special occasions i will start with the one blade and finishes the job with a good old mach 3 just to get a baby skin face.
I owned the one bale first. And my dad took from my house when he left lol so then I tried the solo. Had it for two days and it broke. And I threw it away because I’m not big on returning stuff guy thing I guess or just lazy. But I’d do the one blade again!!! Actually I just ordered a new one because I don’t remember when and Where I got it LOL
One aspect not covered-the longevity of the motor, battery and heads. Too soon to tell? Well, if it helps, my Philips 3-head [HD7363] rotary razor is over 10 years old but still cuts my tough beard like a champ. I sometimes consider replacement heads or even a new model, but why ditch mine when it still works very well and the battery holds a good charge for days? My experience is that Philips make a _very long lasting_ razor-so it's cheaper in the long run.
Had the one blade for awhile now and discovered it works much better using a pre shave power stick like the Remington pre shave powder stick which I can't find in retail stores anymore but no problem to get online .
As a fellow bald head, I would also be curious to how this would work on your head, where there isn't a lot of flat surface to cut, and something that might conform to your head.
Hi! Really good video! I am curious as how to close/smooth the shave becomes compared to a normal razor. Can you still feel stubble after using OnePlus?
I just bought one to shave off a week's growth of hair on my head and I was skeptical but that's very difficult with shaving cream so i purchased 1 and it works great
You should’ve done half of your face with one and the other half with the other. Also a quick question, when going against the grain shouldn’t you be holding the trimmer upside down like you would with a traditional razor? I was thinking that may be the reason it just wasn’t working well going up instead of shaving down .
Yeah I thought of doing half and half but thought doing it in stripes might show any major differences, but there weren't any. As far as going against the grain goes, that's how the instructions showed to do it, so I wanted to do it the "official' way.
I'm so glad I came across this review. I've been looking for a trimmer for my husband. This would be great for touch ups in between barber visits. I think I'll grab the philips.
Thanks for a good review. I think you helped me decide to get this. I end up looking homeless because my skin gets irritated if I shave every second or third day but I'm hoping a razor like this will help.
Did you ever try one of these? My skin is the same way. So I never shave, just use a trimmer every 3 or 4 days. Thinking one of these might get a bit closer cut and still not irritate my skin.
