The rule is 5.05(b): The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put out (provided he advances to and touches first base) when: ... (2) He is touched by a pitched ball which he is not attempting to hit unless (A) The ball is in the strike zone when it touches the batter, or (B) The batter makes no attempt to avoid being touched by the ball; To me, it appears that he has made an attempt to bunt, which he aborted. Based on how I'm interpreting the rule (something I'll admit that I'm not that good at in ideal circumstances, let alone my current ones), an aborted attempt to hit is still an attempt. Therefore, I believe that the umpires are correct in this circumstance. If I'm actually right or not is a mystery to me.

They said Wheeler had a bad day. I disagree, wheelers day was fine because he got paid a lot to basically lose a game. Thomson should have been tossed out of the game for not pulling Wheeler sooner, Thomson is a fool ( a lot) because he can't tell/see when a pitcher, starter or reliever, is having a bad day. He left Wheeler in till the game was completely out of reach today and he has done the same thing in the past.

The guy was out of the batters box. Basically stepped into the pitch. Thompson was wrong!

If he had not squared for the bunt the ball would be nowhere near hitting him. Right call by the ump.
