Solo played by Evan Hughes
A seven-page in-depth drum transcription of Philly Joe Jones [including what he plays to accompany the in and out melodies, as well as all "fours" exchanges]. From the master take.
-- horn melodies are shown above the drum staff
-- Sixteen-measure intro (great hi-hat work)
-- AABA in melody
-- Philly Joe's playing behind eight bars of Hank Mobley's first solo chorus
-- The two choruses of trading with Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan: Philly Joe's fours, plus what he plays behind the horn soloists. Timing for Hank's first entrance in the exchanges is noted on the music: 5:28.
-- AABA out melody
-- Coda (hi-hat work like the intro)
This particular track is full of the "slick" material that made Philly Joe Jones one of the best drummers of all time. Listen to how effortlessly and smoothly he plays the phrases. His fluidity and technique are absolutely fantastic.
The transcription includes his hi-hat work in the introduction, along with his interactions around the melodies and eight bars of Hank Mobley's first solo chorus, two choruses of trading fours with Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan, followed by the out melody and coda.
You'll be reminded just how remarkable Joe's drumming is when you try to play these phrases.

I know this over a decade ago, but since then there has been a lot of well-deserved Philly Joe love going around. Glad to see it. He is not talked about enough. Great sounding drums and cymbals...vintage cymbals...I think those heads are vintage as well...:)

The drum heads probably are 50 years old, (haha) and they are not my drums. My drums have much newer heads. The kit belongs to Don Sickler, and they live at his studio in NYC. There are vintage Slingerland's that were givin to him by T.S. Monk (Thelonious Monk's son and a great drummer). They are definitely worn down, but they have been played by almost every great jazz drummer in the last 30 years, too many to name, so at least in the worn out heads lives some tradition...

It's great to see that there's young drummers out there that still respect the traditional form of jazz drumming and swing ,it took a lot of effort to study and transcribe this music .Philly Joe was definitely one of the slickest drummers in the history of jazz I appreciate the efforts that you have taken for Philly Joe was also very special to me he was my friend and I was fortunate enough to live with him for 6 months Philadelphia in the 80s keep Philly Joe's spirit and music alive for generations to come ,again great job.

I sense sarcasm in this post, correct me if I'm wrong. But the heads and the "tin can" drum sound are as much about a musical drum tone as they are about the feel of the stick on the head. Perhaps you prefer the rounded, dead sound of heavily muted drum heads and the elementary stylings of (most) modern pop and rock drummers. To each his own.

In my opinion, vintage drums sound better...but not vintage heads. They wear out and no longer carry as full a sound. A couple people who knew Philly Joe and saw him have told me that he put a new snare drum head on every time he played.

Yeah, they are much harder to tune when they're old, but because they are more 'dead' sounding the tuning doesn't seem to matter as much as with a brand new head

@@JoKKats I agree with you on that statement. I don't agree with playing transcriptions unless i wrote them myself, because sheet music can't capture everything that's happening in their musical statements. Doing it myself allows me hear every note played and understand the importance of every dynamic and sound that goes with it. But if you aren't going to transcribe and play along to what you like then you'll never develop as strong as the greats.
