If you are not interested in sports and locals, or if you have an antenna, I think that Philo, at $25.00 is definately the best value. Their unlimited, 1 year DVR is definately worth the $5.00 price increase. Having said that, the flexibility and overall channel access that Sling provides makes it the best service of the two IMO. Providing access to a 200 hour DVR with unlimited retention time for $5.00 was a huge improvement for Sling. If these were my ONLY TWO services to choose from, during college football season my choice would be Sling, but after that I would probably switch to Philo because it has more content that I actually watch.
Completely agreed. We think Philo is an excellent service, especially given the DVR features, but fits a smaller group of people not interested in sports. We too like the flexibility of Sling and think it offers just the right amount of sports for someone who doesn't want/need a total cable-like experience.
I agree. Antenna + Philo gives me over 100 channels. The only one I miss is CNN but not enough to pay an extra $15/month (I got Philo when it was $20/month, glad we get to keep that price).
Its kinda a toss up..as like my sports..but Philo..arguably has the best deal in live tv streaming...hard to beat 25 bucks for 60 plus channels and unlimited dvr
Completely agreed. Sling is a decent value for sports, but it lacks the base channels & DVR that Philo has. If you're only interested in one sport you could switch between the two when the season is over to increase savings.
I agree with you, Nicole, I need to have CNN, so I would definitely go with Sling instead of Philo, but I also watch MSNBC, so I would go with Sling Blue, and probably would get the 200 hour DVR for an extra $5.
Sling Blue isn't half bad of a value to get both of those channels, in our opinion. If you don't need ESPN, it can provide some decent savings over other services.
I live in San Diego which notorious OTA service, due to terrain at least partially. Where I live, central San Diego, I can not receive either CBS or ABC. with an atenna, tried 3 different ones. Get multiple chanels from FOX and NBC, very strong, plus about 40 Mexican channels from Tijuana-San Diego and dozens of oddball stations. THus neither Sling nor Philo is good for me.
I've had both but it is so very hard to decide. They both have channels the other doesn't. Sling has CNN and Fox, Philo doesn't. I wish there was a provider in between them but there isn't, so for now, Im with Philo to save money.
i only watch the superbowl, so i dont need a sports plan. i dont see too well, and im the technical one around here, so im not going to switch plans much, if at all. we do love Yellowstone here, so i gotta have Paramount, which i thought i heard today, that Philo offers, hopefully? also have to have Msnbc. i love movies, so proably an addon Hbo, et al, package. i dont want to pay for disney or sports packages, and the fees they include.. thanks again for all the great videos.
Something that needs to be discussed is how difficult it is to cancel Sling on their website....it almost takes an act of Congress! Their website leaves much to be desired.
Yea, we've been hearing reports & receiving questions from viewers of the cancellation issue of late. It sounds like it's a known issue, but can certainly understand how it'd be frustrating.
It looks like sling took FXX from the Blue plan as is not longer listed. I tried Philo for 3 days and I think it is great, but I do miss TBS, Cartoon Network (Adult Swim) programming. So I decided to sign up for Sling. I wish both companies would offer plans a la carte. I really don't care to much about sports. I watch the world cup every 4 years and NBA finals. I also ordered an Air TV 2 so I can integrate the OTA channels in to the Sling Guide. BTW...! I am using an Apple TV 4K (2nd Gen)
Yea, they moved it to the Hollywood Extra add-on, soon after their dispute with Disney last fall. Sling is close to that model, but can see how it'd be an issue for those who don't want sports. Very nice. We just ordered one ourselves to test and review it.
Hi, I just signed up to sling. I noticed with sling I don’t get the hallmark channel. How do I reach out to sling to let them know I want to add on this channel?
They have it available, but you'll need the Lifestyle Extra add-on, which is $6 a month. But, it gets you the main channel, as well as Mysteries & Movies, and Drama. The add-on has 11 total channels. :)
It depends on where you live as they only carry locals in ~ 10-12 markets, and not all of them overlap. While unfortunate, it's a big part of how they're able to keep their costs down relative to more premium services.
Good review. But I hope John doesn't really believe the slogan on his shirt. Oodles of people have believed lies over the centuries and that didn't stop them from being lies. It just meant those people were believing in a lie. If it's true, it true for everybody. While your belief in a lie might make it appear to be true for you, it's still a lie.
Sorry, but you're way reading into this. The line on the shirt is a wildly popular quote from "The Beard" episode of John's favorite show - Sienfeld. That's merely all it is. :)
