It would be awesome to see a video about how to care for a “baby” philodendron (Melanocrysum, Gloriosum,etc) that is mail ordered (cutting or small rooted plant). Probably most folks entering this exciting world of “rare-ish” plants are getting them via mail. When to water/repot? Do they need grow lights? A humidity cabinet? Plastic bag? What to do after opening the box??? I got Gloriosum about a month ago, (three small leaves in soil) left it alone in an indirect light window for a week then potted/watered it. It didn’t do much and I was worried so I got a grow light and humidifier (and put it in a clear plastic tub with the grow light over it). In the past week it’s started putting out a new leaf! It would be great to learn more about the best routine when getting a small plant via mail as I’ve now ordered a Melanochrysum due any day! 😀

That's a really great shout - I'll make sure to cover that soon! The most important thing to take into account is where your cutting has come from. If it's a foreign import for example, or has been grown in an environmentally-controlled greenhouse then it's probably going to need some extra help to acclimatise to it's new environment with you (higher humidity, temperature, light etc etc). It's absolutely fine to reach out to the seller and ask about it's previous conditions - I've done it with many tropical plants I've ordered - they should be very understanding as you want to make sure your new plant does well. Also be aware that when you've ordered a small baby plant, they're often slightly more fragile and are likely to have a more delicate root system, so unless it's absolutely necessary, don't jump in and repot them straight away. If it's arriving as a bare rooted cutting, I'll usually pop it in water for the first 24 hours (the plastic bag method is a great one, or a cabinet if you've got one). Obviously if you're putting it into a cabinet, just be aware of your other plants and be sure to check for pests! As I say, I'll make a vid on this soon 💚

I pick up my first Philodendron Melanochrysum today that I found online for a really good deal. It’s a little bigger than that one. I had to look up your video again because I seen this way before I would have even thought I would afford one lol. They can be pricy for that big thing. Thank you for the information on how to care for them. I definitely needed this!

Great video as always! I have a one leafed, rooted Melanochrysum cutting in pon. Just wondering a couple of things 🤔 It is letting out a bit of sap underneath the leaf, but it looks healthy to me 🤷‍♀️ Might have gotten a bit too much direct sun. And I also wonder how you are checking if you are going to water the plants you have in pon. Are you sticking a finger in there as well? ☺️ Thank you very much for all your great videos! They inspire me a lot! 🎉

Can you give suggestions, my melano grows but doesn't unfurl the leaves properly. They are always curled. I have humidity between 70 to 90%. Temparature is around 24 to 27C

I have a question: is it a good idea to repot the melanochrysum in a self watering pot? Or will it lead to overhydration ? I was thinking the a self watering pot will protect the plant from overyhydration as it will absorb only the amount of.water it needs. Whats your opinion?

I have a question about my melo. So it has two small leaves. I bought it as a cutting on a moss pole. It's just started rooting in. A new leaf was comming out and it got stuck, I tried to help it get unstuck but I broke the new leaf 🤦 did I just royally screw up? Will it push out another one?

Thank you! I just acquired a small rooted cutting and have been worried I’m going to kill it before it gets to move to soil!

Given my (very limited) experience and what I’ve seen online, I really think putting these small new things in enclosed high humidity with grow lights (maybe natural light is ok?) is key. And constant warm temp. I paid $70 for my Gloriosum and I will be so upset if it doesn’t grow! But literally my Gloriosum has grown a new leaf in just a week while in the container w high humidity! All of the “care for” advice seems pretty much to be for established plants…

@@lynnecalli thank you, I also got a Gloriosum rooted cutting with a larger (about 3” ) leaf but it started to yellow within a week so I had to cut the leaf and put the node and roots into a covered cup with spaghnum moss to hopefully activate a new node. I’m really scared for this one. The melanochrysum is doing pretty well in comparison.

I totally agree with what Lynne said! Humidity, good light and a fairly warm, steady temperature should keep it happy. Although it's tempting when you've got a new plant, try not to mess with it too much while it's adjusting too - they really like to have their space to adjust. An airy, well draining soil mix will be best, and (if it came in sphagnum moss/perlite etc) perhaps consider adding that into the soil mix to keep a bit of it's old environment. I often find this helps ease them into the new substrate 💚

My dear, you're not a linguist so don't worry if you make some mistakes. The important thing is that your videos be instructive and entertaining, and as far as that goes you're doing quite well. Congratulations 🎉

Are melanochrysum particularly prone to "stuck" leaves? I have a baby one and it happens every time. And what does one do about that? I mostly manage to leave them alone but its sooo difficult lol Thanks!
@TheJungleHaven
@TheJungleHaven 2 года назад
I've found this a few time, especially like you say with the younger leaves. I sometimes use a damp cotton but to help them unfurl, and just make sure it's environment is super humid 💚

How long does it take a juvenile melanochrysum to mature and start getting the big beautiful leaves ? I just got a rooted cutting with 4 leaves , it’s just a wee baby the leaves are maybe 1-2 inches big max.
@TheJungleHaven
@TheJungleHaven 2 года назад
If you're providing it with optimum conditions and give it a good moss pole to climb up, it usually happens fairly quickly 💚
@jesspaler6217

Can I ask how long they usually take to root.? Mines doing nothing lol 🙏🏾💕
@TheJungleHaven
@TheJungleHaven 2 года назад
It depends on the time of year, the environment you're keeping the cutting in, and how well established the plant was to begin with. If you propagate in sphagnum moss, keep the temperature, lighting and humidity fairly high then you should usually expect to see a little root in a few weeks 💚
