One of the most asked questions I see about Philodendron is how to tell the Philidendron pedatum, squamiferum, and Floridas apart. In this video, we discuss each of these Philodendrons as well as their differences. Hope this helps you identify which of these gorgeous Philodendrons you have questions about.

Lol You sound like a very wise plant parent. I started with Tillandsia and have branched out from there. Sorry, pun intended.

Haha! I actually started from a rescued plant that my brother picked somewhere (not sure if its given to him) it's a dwarf snake plant and a caladium angel wings. I started this May with just those two til i bought my first golden and neon pothos. It's so fulfilling to be able to grow them! Now i have like 30+ mini pots of plants 😂

just to throw a wrench in the works there are two "Florida" branches, both have Squamiferum for a parent, though one is crossed with quercifolium (Florida compactum) and the other crossed with laciniatum (Florida). These are old school patented hybrids, the rest is marketing, as in buyer beware.
@TastefulNodes
@TastefulNodes 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment--you bring up a great point regarding "marketing". According to Tropicos, Philodendron quercifolium = Philodendron laciniatum = Philodendron pedatum :) The crosses that you mentioned would still be considered squamiferum x pedatum; the bigger wrench I imagine would be for people to realize that both quercifolium and laciniatum belong under pedatum. Here's the link to Tropicos for anyone else interested in learning pedatum synonyms: bit.ly/3zfbYMs

How would you tell the difference between ghost and green if there wasn’t any new growth?
@TastefulNodes
@TastefulNodes 2 года назад
If there isn't a new leaf unfurling, I would look to the older leaves. Many times, the older leaves of the Ghost will still appear lighter, even "mintier". Sometimes, but this sometimes is common enough to take note of, Ghost leaves have sport green-on-green variegations. I would look to see if either of those two exists on the leaves of the plant in question. If either appears on those leaves, I would be more convinced that the plant in question is likely a P. Florida Ghost.
@notverynotoriousg5674
@notverynotoriousg5674 2 года назад
ghosts are whiter depending on the light they are grown in, people have problems with them grown in bright light because the plant can't photosynthesize it's so white.

Hi please Help! My I have a Squamish that broke.. healthy leaf...but it broke on the hairy stem ...with no node. What should I do? Water and hope for the best or should I put it straight into soil? Tha ks so much
@TastefulNodes
@TastefulNodes 2 года назад
Awww. If your squamiferum broke off without a node, it will just be a pretty decoration until it dies. If you have a Facebook or Instagram account, feel free to send me a photo of what you're referring to and I can confirm the lack of node. :'(

There are squamous cells (in outer layer of the skin, the epidermis). Squama is latin for scales from a fish or a serpent. Squamiferum refers to the scales of a foot (from this marine snail I guess). Lol do not look it up because it's not as cute as the pubes of your plant.
@TastefulNodes
@TastefulNodes 2 года назад
🤣 You've lived with me long enough to know that telling me not to do something means I will. After seeing that, I do regret being that way. A note to anyone else thinking about looking up snail squamiferum: DON'T!
