My devotion is split down the middle. Saw my first Dead show in 87 at MSG. Was blessed to be a part of their late career renaissance, which in my opinion started to fade in 92. The baton for life changing live shows was handed off in late ’91 when I saw my 1st PH at the Capitol in Port Chester, NY. It’s the preverbal apples and oranges.Jerry was more prone to tickle my heartstrings where Trey melted my face. Thank god Trey and co have adopted a healthy lifestyle. They will be @ for a long time.
@@lokispeicher8103To each their own of course, but I don't understand why people loathed Vince so badly. I absolutely love the sounds and grooves he brought to the table. Not the same as with Brent, but just more different interesting sounds and feelings. Same as with all their keys players. I'm just infatuated with the different kinds of Dead they helped produce.
@@grecorobert97 I appreciate your positivity brother! Excellent way to look at things. Did you ever wonder why Vince was never included in any of the post-Jerry incarnations? Chimenti and Barraco (sp?) aren't complaining about said omission I reckon....Samba In the Rain? Way To Go Home? nope...Ok in light of your positive spin I will admit that I did rather enjoy his take on Tomorrow Never Knows...I was so on "team Brent" that there's a good chance that I would have rejected anyone trying to fill his seat now that I think about it...One Love
One correction: this is the BEST Moma. Also probably one of the greatest phish jams of all time. There is a sense of perfect unity among the band in this song. It's... it's... it's perfect.
@@TubeFlop also nothing was perfect from this year . Some good a lot of bad but it is what makes them today . The best fucking rock band on the planet of our generation .
Everyone is playing so good here. This was my first Phish show I ever fell in love with. Bought the DVD with my weed money when I was like 14 and never looked back. Really love this whole show.. especially the Curtain With. Made me want to take up drumming, and I did.
As a jazz pianist I'm always so impressed with Page's percussive comping under Trey's solos. He's so interactive! I wish they'd zoom in on his keyboards more in this take! Jazz musicians could learn a thing or two from this group's chemistry
i was tripping lastnight and thats ALL i could think of. these guys do so many pieces of music (not just songs) that the highest level of musical education would very much appreciate and want to study. this isnt just a drug band. these 4 guys are music genius’ and i dont use that phrase lightly
This version never fails to take my breath away. I always felt that, given the intensity and raw power of Trey's solo on this Moma, it's like through his playing you are truly hearing a man screaming in pain over the decision he has just made. That's just my interpretation.
Thats what makes phish one of the greatest bands of all time, the fact that they arnt making music for the money they make it for the pure artistic joy it brings them and in turn us how many other bamds openly let their fans record and distribute or trade their music like jerry said once its been played it belongs to the people.i remember way back when napster was big and alot o bands (metallica) comes to mind first were bitching and crying about how it was taking food outa their mouths lol i never reallh cared for them but after that crybaby shit just shows how much some people really care bout nothing other then the paychek
I feel bad for you man you need to look up Shawn Lane and Jonas Hellborg, Snarky Puppy, Robert Glasper and a hell of alot more music before you call this the best piece of music youve ever heard
it can be argued that this is the most psychedelic music ever created. hard to enter this stuff into a dick measuring contest with those fusion chopsters because the context of this music is much different.
Yo don't get it man, I am saying this stuff can't be compared to the other music you mentioned because of difference in context. This music is built for psychedelic spaceship transportation, the other stuff is very high level jazz fusion stuff that is incredible too. It's all awesome in its own way and I really don't think you can compare these worlds.
I never heard of them before a few months ago but snarky puppy played a show in indy and while it was deff cool and i dug it its nowhere near a live phish show, i agree with dude they are on a whole other level than most other bands
So I heard a little tab on a dead station and was like ohhhh shiiiiiit and thought I might dig round a bit. A really good buddy said 97 would be a good place for me to start.....I found this round 9 months ago and I keep coming back over and over. I now have most of the 90s in my library, however the music never stops.
Was at this show and just remember screaming my head off at the 9 minute mark. So freaking powerful and intense! Can't believe how fortunate I am to be here while this is going on. Fucking WIN!
Yeah, with the trainwreck (treynwreck?) that was vegas shortly before this and trainwreck that was coventry shortly after this, its amazing to me how good this is.
He probably wasn't even getting very high at that point, he is a walking scarecrow, at some point the effect of drug diminishes. I think he gets in zone regardless of the drug consumed. I saw phish at Dicks and they can f-ing rip it with no buzz on whatsoever. I play myself, quit using everything several years ago, and playing effect is much more powerful with no inhibition imho. Don't need oxy to get there.
@Juantarde I've been battling that demon for the better part of 12 years..sometimes successfully sometimes not..but music is powerful medicine for sure
I agree with most this may be the BEST Moma ever! I actually have this in my top 10 all time live performances, Trey was extremely high but damn it’s epic!
This is my favorite Moma for sure. Just crystal clear, precise, and jams way into outer space. Don't care if it's 2.0 and Trey's guitar sounds thinner than ever. The Free and Possum are absolute fire as well in this show.
Trey def played off his TAB 2000/2001/2002 jazzy influenced band and brought that tone to 2.0. I myself love the Trey tone from later 1.0 but prefer Gordon's sound in 2.0. I remember hearing that he canned the ross compressors which was what boosted his tone to cut through the mix. I'm still very found of 2.0 even though it was very hit or miss. If it hit, it slapped, if it was a miss it was horrible.
jesus christ this is the best modern day performing act. and they are so in sync now more than ever, these guys fuckin tear it up. they have more creativity than any of you haters; they have a monstrous following despite having no radio hits, sell out Madison Square every new years, and yea Trey is a badass guitarist, probably one the best of his generation. if you don't like them, fine but you can't deny the talent that they each possess.
through continuous repetition of these little funky jamming bits attached together ,each time they play it you can wind up with a completely different version .They eventually just keep getting better and better at these bits .This is tight !
i think thats why this Moma is so incredible. Moma is a naturally pretty repetitive song even when it was still Black Eyed Katy. but with this version, the first time listener might expect your everyday average moma dance but this completely blows it out of the water exactly how you said, with that funky dirty 2.0 energy building!!! I❤️🐟
As a musician, ex heroin addict, and phish fan, I will say that there’s a sweet spot with music and opiates and while it doesn’t last long and is ultimately destructive more often than not, it exists and is a wonderful place to be for however long it lasts.
When Trey goes off in the later jam, even Fishman howls in astonishment! lol When you can get your 30 year friend and bandmate off, you are a sick fucking guitarist!
I am an ole ded hd and my friends told me to come hear phish, now I know why. this is funky time love the funky tune. Yeah excited now, hope they funk it up for washingtonians. Still will hold the dead as number 1 in my heart for eva and eva
I’m convinced that the crowd isn’t weak. They’re we’re all just shredded by Trey and are in a state of disarray. That and prolly a little combination of hetti party supplies and the shred.
It’s so cool to see them dig the fuck into the music despite everything going on. In a lot of footage from this time period, the band looks dejected while Trey wastes away in front of them. Here the darkness comes through but the band is enjoying the moment.
This 2 night Brooklyn span runs from thrilling and fresh, to just damn depressing. The following night brought out Hov for Big PImpin and 99 Problems... both practically undigestable but historic none the less. The SPAC run around the same time was UNBELIEVABLE, easily the best shows of the pre-break up tour in 04
Derek Van Buren haha yea I would be too if my job was to play guitar with my friends every night; being fucked up playing badass jams oh man that's the dream.
My friend was talking about horrible bands and I never heard of this band so I came.and checked out a video and they aren't bad definitely not my style I'm a metal head but I get how people like this music
