From its beginning in 2008, Phoenix's light rail network has grown to 38 stations, spanning 28 miles (45 kilometers). This animated video takes you through the timeline of when new stations were opened, forming the Valley Metro network that we know today.

As somebody who lives in a Phoenix suburb without a car I will say that the bus system is very extensive. It is not as frequent as it should be but it covers the city really well!

@@grahamturner2640 this might come as a surprise to you, but people live in Surprise. Those people have no option to take the bus anywhere, and there’s no way for anyone to take the bus to visit them. And Peoria has notably more bus service than Gilbert, although in both areas the service is abysmally low with most residents living over a two mile walk to the nearest bus stop where service is offered infrequently for only half of the day.

As tempting as it initially was to mock Phoenix for only having one line, I think this video helped me to realize that it's not as bad as I thought. With a city so large and a transit system so small, I always thought they were just anti-transit, but it seems like they're invested in expanding their infrastructure. Thus, it seems more like they were just late to the game. Here's hoping the system continues to grow!

The Rapid System is not considered a BRT because they are rush hour commuter services. There were two temporary BRTs that were setup (one along Main St to Superstition Mall and the other along Arizona Ave to Pecos) that ran for a few years after the light rail first opened up. I would say this is around 2010 or so and ran for a few years. However, I am unable to find much information about it nowadays. It featured 1 mile spaced stops, level boarding queue jumping bus only lane at traffic light, off vehicle ticket payment system 15 minute headways during the day, etc... everything other than isolated ROW system.
@CityLifeinAmerica
@CityLifeinAmerica 2 года назад
@@spewmuffin That project was nixed because too many people didn’t understand the difference between that and the local bus :-(. Interesting. My brother lived in Scottsdale. I visited him often while the system was under construction. We had heated arguments over it. He hated money was being spent on it. I was thrilled and spent my days there walking up and down the line. I tried to explain to him but I think we've all been there. I'm a little disappointed the red line doesn't continue to the north as the Valley Line did. Perhaps increasing 2 lines could run on the same track I would think. Or perhaps a future extension west? Continuation and connectivity always seems important to me and transfers can be discouraging. I'm very curious as to how development along the line has progressed. I am hoping it is getting lined with some first-class "TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT.

Scottsdale where they take pride in being NIMBYs, and consider 7 floors a high rise and 150’ tall buildings skyscrapers. I’ve never seen so many people complain about parking in a city where I’ve never had a problem finding free parking if you are willing to walk a couple blocks. They like to pride themselves on being a walkable city, but they never want to actually walk more than 20’ from the parking spot directly in front of the place they want to go.

It’s standard practice in Phoenix for light rail stops to be named after the cross streets, and secondary names (names which are on the platforms and stated In announcements) are there for important destinations (e.g., 44th St/Washington having Sky Harbor Airport, and University Dr/Rural are having ASU’s Tempe campus). while it's good they're doing something, it's not enough for a city that is facing as many car-sprawl caused issues as it is. It desperately needs a rail network that is capable of going much faster, the light rail vehicles have a maximum speed of only 35mph and they usually run at a pathetic 22. it's very hard to justify walking and waiting at a stop in 120°+ weather for a train that often travels at a speed lower than the speed limit on a residential street. it needs both a high speed light metro system that is cost and space efficiently grade seperated,and a high speed heavy passenger rail network, as well as upgrading some bus routes to BRT. Light rail has a purpose, and should have a place in the VM transit network, but it's best for traveling short distances, which has limited use in a city as sprawling as phoinex. Phoenix needs rail that is faster than taking a car and can realistically cover more of its sprawling borders. Since phoinex doesn't have a lot of space for building railroad, I'd use the same Guage for all the modes. I'd also invest in signaling devices on light rail and busses that allow them to always get a green light, mixed with smart scheduling. also they need to improve pedestrian and cycling infrastructure as that is really important for good transit networks.

My own city's (Stockholm) main Light Rail line is about half as long, with about 3/4 as many stations and has about twice the ridership. Which actually makes me very impressed by the Valley Metro! Stockholm is in way, waaaay more transit-focused a metro area (including much of the suburbs) and has several other rail lines with transfers to our light rail line. Pheonix has none of that and still manages to not only do decently, but actually do so well that there's three (3!) expansions in the works. keep in mind- phoenixs growth and urbanity is relatively new when compared to other cities. starting with a 20 mile initial segment and planned growth like they’re getting is pretty great and is, in fact, a network .

@@onesevenninewest You must not have much experience riding it then. I ride it almost daily, and Vlog about it. There are videos demonstrating everything I stated above to be fact on my channel. Of course, infrequent is subjective. And there is one and only one stretch where it goes over 35 mph, and that’s while crossing Tempe Town Lake. I often ride in the seats behind the operator, and can see the speedometer.

As someone who's needed and taken the bus and light rail before....stop expanding it. Seriously, wherever the lightrail goes becomes so ghetto it ruins entire areas. The part of Mesa I live in used to be quiet and chill. As soon as the lightrail went up so many homeless drug addicts popped up the area is just shitty now. I got threatened by some crackhead one night just walking my dog. I had to buy my fiance a gun and neither her or my daughter go out alone. That's not okay.

@gaveman5051

@@ianhomerpura8937 Hey, we have another arrogant guy here. Why do you foreigners ALWAYS think you understand how everything works here in the states? Have YOU rode public transit in Phoenix? Because I have and yeah, sadly it is mostly poor people and the homeless that use it, it's not very pleasant trying to get to work or school and having to deal with drug addicts fighting with each other, screaming, asking for money, cigarettes, threatening you, etc. So I don't blame my fellow citizens that decide they'd rather just avoid those situations and use a personal vehicle, or the people that would rather not have a bunch of panhandlers and thieves show up in their neighborhoods. Something needs to be done about the poverty problem in this country, otherwise it will be impossible to encourage people to support expansion of public transit.
