The night after Christmas, we went to the nearby charming, historic town of Phoenixville and took a quiet stroll on Bridge Street, the town's main drag. Phoenixville was initially known as Manavon until 1849, when it adopted its current name in honor of the Phoenix Iron Company, the town's primary employer at the time. Today Phoenixville's artsy, low-key vibe attracts many visitors to its wine-tasting rooms, 10 craft breweries, a distillery, many low-key restaurants, and eclectic, locally owned shops (including a lovely pet supply store where an adorable long-hair feline security guard watches your every move). Phoenixville is located in Chester County, PA, and is 28 miles northwest of Philadelphia at the junction of the fast-flowing French Creek which was harnessed for water power and the Schuylkill River, a historic thoroughfare to Native Americans and early settlers. The Phoenixville Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We frequently hang out in Phoenixville and take a long walk on the Schuylkill River Trail after enjoying a delicious meal.
Fun facts: Kevin Bacon, a famous actor from Philadelphia, spent weekends at his grandmother's home in Phoenixville. The Annual Phoenixville Blobfest is a 3-day event that commemorates the classic 1958 movie The Blob that had a famous scene filmed at the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.
