Phoneme identification

This video introduces the concept of phonemes as the smallest unit of language that can distinguish meaning. In addition, this video also introduces the methods of testing whether a sound is a phoneme or an allophone, i.e., minimal pair, contrastive distribution, and complementary distribution. By watching this video, the viewers will understand that not all sounds are phonemes because only those with the ability to distinguish sounds are phonemes. Although the examples provided in this video are English sounds, but the theory is applicable in any other languages.

Thank you for the explanation sir. So the difference between phoneme and allophone is the ability to distinguish meaning. Phoneme, with the ability to distinguish meaning, and Allophone, without the ability to distinguish meaning. We can identify phonemes with three methods (minimal pair, contrastive distribution, complementary distribution).

Thank you for the explanation Sir 🙏🏻 What I can conclude from this video is phonemes is a that can distinguish meaning while allophone is a sound that can't distinguish meaning. However, there are three ways to identify a phonemes which are ; minimal pair, contrastive distribution and complementary distributor. Dian Zelly.B/ NK2 - 21

Thank you for the explanation sir. From this learning video, I got a better understanding of the difference between phonemes and allophones. In simple terms, we can say that phoneme has the ability to distinguish meaning, while allophone does not have the ability to distinguish meaning. And there are also three methods to identify phonemes such as Minimal pair, contrastive distribution, and complementary distribution. But I'm curious why the pronunciation of "car" can be with /ka:r/ and /kha:r/ but they still have the same meaning. What makes them different? And in what condition do we use /ka:r/ or /kha:r/? Thank you sir🙏
@rusdinoorrosa9155
@rusdinoorrosa9155 Год назад
They are different sounds but they don't distinguish meaning. Therefore, they are allophones. The case of [kh] is called aspirated sound because it is pronounced with an accompanying forceful expulsion of air. The aspirated sound is experienced by the three voiceless stops /p/, /t/, and /k/. They are aspirated when they are at the beginning of a word and are stressed.

No, it's not. The smallest meaningful unit of a language is morpheme. A phoneme has no meaning, but it has the ability to distinguish meaning.

Thanks for the explaination, Sir. Your video I can understand about phonemes and a little bit about allophone. So, I can conclude that the smallest unit of language is sound. Sound is divided into 2 kinds. The first is the sound with the ability to distinguish meaning or called phoneme. The second is the sound has no ability to distinguish meaning or called allophone. From this explanation, give me more knowledge about phonemes. We must be able to distinguish between phonemes and allophones. Name: Ekasepti Nurrahma NIM : 21019008 Class code: 027 From this video, I can conclude that Phoneme identification is the smallest unit of language is sound, syllables are composed into sound. Sound can be divided into 2 kinds: with the ability to distinguish meaning (called phoneme), and sound without the ability to determine meaning (called allophone) Differences phoneme and allophone: Allophone is 2 different sound but they cannot distinguish meaning, meanwhile, phoneme can distinguish meaning. Method of identifying phonemes: 1. minimal pair: 2 words with a similar phonetic environment with: - the same number of segments -only one different segment -2 words have different meanings. 2. contrastive distribution: comparing the placement of different sounds in the same phonological environment, for example, both are located in the final syllable or both located in the initial syllable. Constructive distribution implies that the sound in contrastive distribution can distinguish meaning. 3. Complementary distribution: comparing the placement of different sounds in different phonological environments. Sounds that are in complementary distribution cannot distinguish meaning. When the sound is in the complementary distribution those sounds are not phonemes

yurika tiara ramanda, 21019114, nk2-21 thank u for the explanation sir from this video i know Phonemes are the smallest unit of language that does not has a specific meaning but can function to distinguish meaning and show a different meaning. Allophones are variations in pronunciation of the same phoneme and does not change the meaning of the word. So the difference is that the phone can change the meaning while the allophone can't. there are 3 method to identifying phonemes: minimal pair, cobtastive distribution, and complementary distribution.
