Saving this video! This is exactly what I've been looking for before buying this product. A nice thorough test of how well it works that isn't potentially paid for (and results skewed) by the company in order to increase sales. Thank you for the work you put into this! I would have loved to see a control sample of just the distilled water to rule out any possible contamination in the swabs, water or the plates though. Maybe next time?
FYI, distilled water is not sterile. Next time try WFI (water for injection). Or, buy a box of cheap alcohol wipes (individually wrapped, like what's used to wipe your arm before an injection; but, even alcohol can contain bacterial spores, so make sure they are sterile wipes) and just wipe down the phone. I have the Phone Soap Pro and sometimes I don't want to wait 5 minutes, or often you need to wipe off organic oils so the UV rays can penetrate properly. Just a thought. A lot of people are not sure of the effect of intense UV rays on phone components. I also put credit cards, etc. in the Phone Soap Pro; but, wish the unit was deeper so it would also sanitize my car keys, etc. Pro model has great acoustic channels so you can still hear alerts. I'm a pharmaceutical microbiologist, so cudos on the home science effort! Tips for next time: to make sure you also recover molds, you should let the dishes grow up at cooler temperatures as well. But, always run a negative control (unopened plate) as well as a positive control (streaked with organisms to prove the agar supports growth). Looks like you used Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA) petri dishes, which work fairly well for your purposes. But, sorry to say, the nonsterile water really negates all your effort.
Glad I could help you make a decisions :) I think you'll really enjoy it. I've gotten a great use out of mine. Let me know how it goes when you get to try it out
Your phone soap tests and review videos are done well. Thanks for posting them. I was able to purchase the Phone Soap Go model on April 6th and it was delivered on May 15th. I like that it's cordless and is also able to charge my phone if needed however, I only use it at home. I also like that my various generic earbuds are able to fit into the unit and that it should be good for up to 45 sanitations on 1 charge. Thanks again for your videos.
Thanks for the comment. I really liked the Go when doing research on phonesoap. Im drawn to the wirelessness of it and being able to tote it around. It's good to hear you're getting good use out of it
Thank you for making this video! definally agree with the comments, you need more subs. Entertaining, funny, & informative! I actually bought PhoneSoap Pro for my work, and i bought 2 of their Airsoap for personal use. Definitely appreciate your time for doing the experiment so i don't have too! Phonesoap if your reading this, sponsor him! or at least a affiliate link/code
Appreciate the kind comments D! I had a ton of fun with this phonesoap video series and was glad it validated some awesome tech that I can use in my daily. Hopefully I can keep finding and sharing cool stuff like this
Thanks for the review!! I heard that COVID is affected by UV. Even if it isn't, its a good idea, and based on your review, I bought one (the Pro). Thanks again!!
Yah there are some studies that uv-c might help with covid, but not enough results to be certain..hopefully though. Im glad I could help you with your purchase, tell me how you like it when you get it!
I know you only tested for the ability of the HomeSoap Pro to kill bacteria. To check for its ability to kill viruses, these same samples might have (invisible to the naked eye) viruses already growing on them. Then all that is necessary would be to send your samples to a laboratory with a microscope to check for any growth of the much smaller virus colonies. You could do all the sample prep work and then send out the samples to a lab for reading the cultures. I don't know the cost of doing this, but it might be a nice follow-up to your excellent work with bacteria.
It's a good idea but probably not in my near term future. I did it more as a fun little home experiment and to play around with things readily available on amazon. Just looking for things to pass the time during these covid times. I'm no scientist so I'm just trying the best with what I got and learning from mistakes. Maybe when I run out of things to review I can revisit but for now I should have enough items to test to take me into 2021
Interesting the phone back had more than the phone front Post-UVC. You would think since the back of the phone is covered with the case and the front isn't, where all the finger swapping is, there wouldn't be that one giant bacteria on the petri dish. Must be an anomaly. ?
UtmostCoin I ended up getting the Phone Soap 3 and I use it now every day! It’s been really convenient! I do wonder though how well it works against COVID-19 with everything that’s happening now!
Sounds like cool product but believe mild dish soap and distilled water with micro fiber will do the job. You still have to clean your screens because bacteria/viruses can hide behind any contaminates behind phone. This is true for water purification systems that use uvc as last layer of defense and that's dealing with purified water in a uvc enclosure. So in my opinion its just a fancy piece of equip that is only as effective as surface transparency. Phonesoap just sanitizes not clean and sanitize so why buy if you need to clean anyways before sanitizing. To further keep screen clean just use hand sanitizer before using your mobile to mitigate bacteria. You could even spray citric acid on hands after hand sanitizer which will keep a acidic layer on your slush puppies.
If your phone is muddy and disgusting of course this is not gonna do the trick. It's not a car wash. Surface level clean and sanitation are different thing. A bar of soap can look clean, but have cultures of bacteria on it still However if your phone is coming out of your pocket relatively rubbish free which is the case for most, UV-C can help with bacteria break up and sanitize the phone. UVC is used Medical instruments and hospitals to aid in sanitation due to its germicidal effects. While disinfectant wipes may work in some cases, the drying process and potential for collection of moisture can lead to recontamination. Obviously if there's blood everywhere it's not gonna clean that up, but its a method to kill germs you cant see on seemingly clean surfaces.
@@UtmostCoin well, I have treated all my phones, earphones, keys and some cables, they all smell the same : something like Ozone if you know what i mean. Of course you must get your nose very close to the treated surface to catch it but everything I put inside the PSP definitively does smell funny ! Tnx for the vid, bro !
I have a question, you said some of your case was not sanitized, does that mean we should sanitize the case alone for 10 minutes and the sanitize the phone alone for 10 minutes?
No 5 minutes should be good in most cases. If you wanna be doubly sure you can do your phone separately. The reason I say some of my case wasn't sanitized because there is a significant gap between my case and my ohsnap phone stand. In retrospect I should have taken it off, it added a lot of variability. Generally if you have a smooth flat, non- poreous surface, the phonesoap will perform great.. if the light can hit the surface for the 5 minutes it's good. If it doesn't hit the light you might not get full sanitation
I mean if you're using the phonesoap regularly you might be ok with a clear case like that but separating will give you best results. I can't tell you exactly without doing the test myself or having phone soap confirm. My guess is you may have some cleaning loss since the case cause some interference. So 5 minutes for each might be best if you're really tryna be clean. Or maybe do it together every day and separate for deep cleaning once a week. The other solution is they have their bigger homesoap which is big enough to do multi device sanitation.
I am trying to buy one from ebay, since where i live i can’t find one anywhere else, but i am surprised by the high number of people that sells them as opened box, never used, ony used once and others like that. My question is, is there anything wrong with these devices, or why do people try to get rid of them apparently as soon as after buying them ?
People might just be trying to resell them for a profit or maybe people just dont find themselves using them as much as they thought. I haven't had any issue with mine thus far. As another viewer has mentioned there are a few options out there that might be cheaper. Phonesoap has good marketing behind it so might be top of mind, but other companies like Homemedics and even generics sell UV-C light. If you're really interested, but the price is too steep, there are probably a ton of cheaper option to explore on Amazon or AliExpress.
@@UtmostCoin tryed something cheaper, wich i ened up returning, as i figured out it only had uvc leds only on the top, so i would of had to flip phone, to clean the other part too, so that was much time consuming. So i eventually picked phonesoap since it is doing both sides at once
Phonesoap has def been working for me so hopefully it's the same for you. There's some intriguing options on Kickstarter like magbak but who knows when those will go out
there's some encouraging studies related to Far-UVC, but more research needs to be done to confirm effectiveness: www.cuimc.columbia.edu/news/far-uvc-light-safely-kills-airborne-coronaviruses
