I used rime magic and Heggerty when I taught. Love them both! I am asking for Secret stories for Christmas, even though I just tutor family and friends for free. I would love to get Eyewords at some point as well. I love literacy so much!

this video was so helpful thank you!!! i am trying to convince my admin to get heggerty to use with my kinders as an option for our daily intervention time! you could even incorporate phonemic awareness in morning meetings too with different songs and rhymes, my kids love the willaby wallaby song - you sing their name replacing the onset with a /w/ so sarah becomes warah. they love it!! i have also wanted secret stories but might do a donors choose to get them since it is more pricey

Hello, I teach kindergarten and am lucky enough to have all 4 of these resources. I know that heggerty is daily and I use secret stories as they come up. My rime magic has been sitting on a shelf for two years now. My question is, how often do you do the rime magic routine with the kids? Is it daily too or just once or twice a week?

I really appreciate how you welcome us viewers into your classroom! Your videos are so informative and fun to watch 😀 I do have a note + question, though. When you read the secret story for "th," I noticed that the story seemed to imply that the same sound is made in the words "they," "the," and "with"-- an unvoiced sound. However, isn't the th- sound in "they" and "the" voiced, and therefore a different sound than that made in the word "with"? I'm not sure if the primary purpose of that secret story was to introduce the association between "th" and its corresponding unvoiced sound, but could having example words that actually don't follow that association become confusing to students down the line? Phonics really shows just how complex and confusing the English language can be when it comes to words that don't follow the patterns being taught 😅 How do you go about teaching and addressing those inconsistencies?

Hello! I am an ELA teacher and I teach small groups all day. I’m thinking about purchasing the “Heavy Duty” decorative phonics flash cards from Secret Stories. I’m wondering if I should purchase the decorative squares kit instead? Or if I’ll be fine with just the flash cards, what do you think?

Trying to decide if I should add secret stories into my wheelhouse. The thing is, our school has fundations (we love it) and it’s pretty involved, lots of visuals and letter-keyword associations, I’m worried that adding in more would be overwhelming..?

Hi Mayleen!! This video was so incredible! So helpful! Saving all of these for my classroom. I have a question though! When you were doing rhyme magic, I noticed there was an ‘_am’ in there. Since it doesn’t follow the typical /a/ vowel sound, do you find it harder for rhyming? (Since you noted there was a dependence on reviewing the vowel sounds before doing the rhyme magic). I have found /an/ and /am/ difficult to teach without memorization. Is there a secret for it?
@MrsCallsCampers
@MrsCallsCampers 2 года назад
It's because it's followed by m! So it's a nasal a. There is a secret for the -ng sound which is nasal (the ing, ang, ong, ung secret) but not specifically for the nasal a sound. When I start rime magic and they aren't perfect with the nasal a yet, I cue them with the shape of my mouth for the sound (without me actually saying the sound) when they are reading and need a cue, I ask what "an" says in "and" to help because they're familiar with it. It's cool to teach the nasal sounds with kinders though because if you make the sound for m, n, or ng, you can cut it off when you hold your nose! It can help first graders remember to look for something different 🤷🏻‍♀️

quick question about rime magic - when building and spelling a word from the rime eg. bigger , what do you think about sounding out the word first and then spelling the word? We alway look at sound before letter name so thought that could be a good transition?

Solely decodables! My school doesn't have any leveled readers. If they did I would just be more selective and much more intentional about when and if I introduced certain ones.
@shychyenne
@shychyenne 2 года назад
@@MrsCallsCampers yeah leveled readers are all we have, and we are required to get the students to a certain benchmark using them by the end of the year. I’m very conflicted about it. I’m wondering if there’s a way to incorporate SOR while still using the leveled readers too.
