This is one of my favorite Grateful Dead songs and I love this version. I think they did a great job of tapping into the soul and energy of the dead

Screw the naysayers! Anyone that puts forth an effort to cover a Dead song and put their own touch of grey on it, is good in my book. Well done guys, awesome version

I think it's great. I don't see the purpose of covers as "meant to compete with the original"...instead they are just a new take and a way to keep the spirit of the music alive through the years. I can't wait for all to be released.

Felt the urge to comment after reading some negative ones. I came across this on a spotify shuffle - had never heard the original, or Phospohorescent either. Something about it caught my ear and it put me on to the rest of his stuff. So, it gets a big thumbs up from me! ;-)

I really like this version. They did a good job. Can't wait to see Dead and Co. in July at Fenway.

this is almost like the tempo of Dead versions from the mid-80s. except Phosphorescent isn't double timing it in order to get the jump on the cocaine dealer before he splits.

+4AD Well wrought tribute to the keepers of the flame that is American Music. The Dead did it all, and with great respect. Here too Jenny et al have written another chapter that empirically proves that the Grateful Dead were the best American band ever. Great choices, great performances, I love you all for doing this. War on Drugs is a ruse and always has been. It is about chaining the poor to radiators of misery and spreading Imperial power. See "Operation Gladio," or "Everything is a rich man's trick" great docs.

I despise tie dye, and I won't be on the road selling burritos or bongs to roadtrip with the band, but Jenny Lewis is a raging goddess ;-)

This is great, but what is the point of Jenny Lewis on it? I love her and was expecting her to have more of a prominent role....
@g2theis0
@g2theis0 8 лет назад
+snovakattack1 her harmonies are all over the chorus! I agree, it would've been cool to have her sing a verse though.

+UsEliteSki My Uncle followed the Dead for 25 years. I have no evidence to defend my assertion other than my ears were pleased by this and never by that.

+Zach Kuhn funny thing is this terribly unlike the dead. slow down the tempo a bit and let the music breath and buddy that is one grateful soup. With Jenny doin those lovely background vocals. That organ, those descending guitar runs. This is very true to form and a fantastic tribute

+pasuloco Yes!!! Wonderful fresh take on Sugaree. I've been a Dead Head for over half my life, and to me, it's all about moving forward and passing the music on. This cover is not at all typical jamband fashion. It's fun, light, and well-executed. Love it!

This really is inferior to the original. It's not a generational thing. This version is just lightweight. If the Dead had performed this poorly they wouldn't be the legendary band they are
@jeffreypaultessier

If they'd upped the tempo even further they could've been done even quicker.

It's not that far off the original and I don't know how far you could take it without it being completely alien anyay. Enh, it's ok. Honestly, it sound like Joe average bar band was asked to do a cover of Sugaree. Not bad, but I'm hardly impressed.
@thebrysmith3

So it's a gospel two step, and not a slow blues shuffle. I'm OK with that.

Doesn't have the conviction, or soul, of the original, particularly by the lead vocalist.

Meh. This version has zero dynamics, and none of the soulful groove of even the most uptempo rocking Grateful Dead versions. It's kind of fun, I guess, but boring, and I would have rather heard a band like the Alabama Shakes cover it. They would have killed it.

not a great album. there was at least one track that temporarily captured my attention, although a sad representation of 70's prog. I wouldn't buy this. the musicianship is really sub par and the writing in generic
@chuckhowe123

Everything I have heard off of this album sounds like it is done by people who would really rather not be playing Dead tunes. Deadicated was so much better.
