I love Photek's production work, because it isn't cluttered and he allows things to breathe and the drums to take precedent. It's so wonderful how everything has its own spot in the mix at the precise moment when needed.
What is the most hip thing, that the drums are really doable to play! everything is so natural, ofcourse some technique needed but nothing is too much, super doable and after all super tasty and melodical approach on drums.
I was 23 when this came out... i'm now 45. My kids just look at me weird when I play this in the car (and of course with two 10" speakers in the trunk).
No disrespect intended. But your kids need educating. I had to educate my kids in the fine arts of Photek and d&b..they love it now because of there master 😂
I wanted to argue that this track was far ahead of its time, but in reality it's timeless and boundaryless. Betting it will sound as fresh in 2298. Forever grateful for the music ❤️
photek and plug had that sound. so different than moving shadows stuff. much more minimal and orchestral. I liked it all. And on the other side Technical Itch.. the heavy shit.
Not gonna lie, I had this track on an endless loop when I first bought the CD back in 1999. I actually found it relaxing, it helped me fall asleep. Truly a masterpiece...
SAME THING, same damn year too! I'd never heard of jungle but this was the first CD i bought... at the Bahrain airport. the drums reminded me of rain. big up fellow human :)
Wow, now this takes me back... so good. Back in the day when DNB/jungle was so full of promise. I felt its emergence and the invention of the breakbeat was on par with that of jazz. Listening to this again raises the hairs on my arms.
This is still the future of dnb. Producers like myself will make this sound possible once again, and all shall know this sound is what's up, what's been up, and will always be on top.
@TeckGeck Fellow Junglist! I’d link my music, but I produce nothing like this at the moment. I’m currently more into the minimal scene at the moment. But I appreciate the reply, because this will really help me realign my focus!
Tunes like this remind me of three things: Wipeout 2097 Designer's Republic MTV's Amp All else is irrelevant. Photek is legendary and any contrarians are irrelevant. Disagrees and thumbs down are irrelevant.

intentlyserious What other tunes have that effect that you know of. It sounds easy but i never programmed drums. I just djed. So it's a jedi death blow to me.
This, along with Ni Ten Ichi Ryu, are the absolute pinnacle of the art form for me. Although I don't do straight dnb per se, I've tried incorporating some ideas and drawn inspiration from the effortless rhythm/flow in my own stuff. Though I can't even come close to the master...
You can never go wrong with photek..... From beginning to end..... I mean sure there's goldie and the posse..... But note everyone's a junkie...... Photek is a testament to that
@@dan.j.boydzkreationz dude I love tool but the band is not it's own genre and ya can't go comparing mainstream prog metal to decently slept on drum and bass
Hip hop had a good run through the 90s and early 00s but as of late most of it is kinda embarrassing comparatively imo, still some great rappers out there but yeah. Such is the way with art; it manifests, breaks ground and is then commercialised for profit, and in doing so its essence, earnest and character - that is to say its soul - is essentially destroyed. Standouts remain but so often is the case that a kind of taint persists that's quite hard to separate from the general image of the genre of origin.
When u don't hear this track in a few years and 04:45 happens, and u bust out laughing cause ur fucking tickled to death cause this track go so STOOPID! Damn it's that good. Its finna be 30 fucking years old, still sounds so fresh.
Ahahahahahahahahahaha this EXACT THING just happened to me, churning through work emails and forgot all about the stuttered drum section and just broke out cackling like a madman
@@damirvukalic Absolutely sure. Type Photek documentary into RU-vid and you'll see all three of them (Source Direct is two blokes James Baker and Phil Aslett).
Good shout. The Tighten Up break is not the easiest one to sample and program as well as Photek has done here. Source Direct's Snake Style is another absolute banger with this break.
