Photo Deconstruction: Gels on Location (But really in the studio!)

My brand new class The Magic of Gels is officially out! If you're interested in creating photos like the ones featured in this video I highly recommend you check it out! I go over everything you need to know on how to properly use gels in your work for the best creative results! 😍
Visit: lindsayadler.photo/ytgels for more info.
----
In this video I deconstruct an image lit with colored gels to transform an ordinary location into something that looks like a nightclub or bar. Even though this says "on location" I am in my studio but I'm not using the studio like I normally would against a backdrop.
As you probably know, I often shoot beauty and fashion images in the confines of my studio space, but I wanted an image that looked a bit more on-location with a sense of atmosphere. I decided to pose my subject on the couch in the sitting area of the studio and add gels to make the space have a more interesting mood.
With the subject posed on a red couch, I decided to base my gel choice off of the furniture in the image. One light would have a red strobe, and another would have a teal strobe. I wanted to select complementary colors, but decided that red/green may be a bit too ‘Christmas’ in feel, so I selected an analogous color of teal.
Analogous colors are colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. For example, yellow, green-yellow, and green are categorized as analogous colors. The word 'analogous' is defined as two things with a similar function or feature that are comparable to one another.
I posed the subject across the couch to make a more pleasing shape with her body and more interesting composition for the eye to explore.
The shot as lit overhead by a small white umbrella (no gel). The right hand side of the frame was lit by a large deep umbrella with diffusion and a red gel to wrap around most of the frame. Finally a bare bulb with a teal/green gel was used to light the shadows on the left of the frame. The colors selected helped create a sense of atmosphere to the otherwise static black environment.
I hope you enjoyed this photo deconstruction and it inspired you to turn ordinary locations into anything you want them to be!

Thank you. It is so refreshing to see somebody who is all about the creative process and technique rather than gear and preset oriented. I really appreciate all the work you put into this.

I like the way you transform a corner of your studio into a disco or night spot based on light ... extraordinary! I liked that in the end you cut enough so that you don't see a small part of the other leg because that caused distraction ...

Really cool!! I often look for space behind the subject but this way you really used the "tight" area with a wall right behind the model and it turned out so well. Good lighting made it possible for such a set up I think. Really nice! You got a sub!

What if you had placed a main light aimed at her face? (perhaps using a grid or barn doors) I also would have tried with a silver umbrella, instead of the white soft that you used, and used it as a hair and separation light. Not that I don't like your image, it is just imagining what the result would have been doing these changes. i am going to try it myself. Thanks again, Lidsay, you inspire me to experiment!

Wow! Thanks a lot Lindsay! You're like Santa for giving us such beautiful presents! But... you're real, so basically you're better than Santa! :D BTW I've always wondered how to attach gels to bare bulb strobes. I feel you're doing this a lot so you must have a super hiding technique (aka DIY maybe!) but I find this quite tricky since I'm afraid they kinda melt on the bulb... Thanks again for all those wonderful videos Regards from France!
@lindsayadlerphoto
@lindsayadlerphoto 5 лет назад
I just use gaffers tape and bend them out so the gel isn't directly against the head. :D

@matigelman8675
@matigelman8675 5 лет назад
This is really well explained. Thank you! I have a theoretical question... if I’d shoot this with the same set up, but I’d use a beauty dish instead of the key light and an Octabox instead of the deep umbrella. How would that change the look? Do you think it would be significantly different?
@lindsayadlerphoto
@lindsayadlerphoto 5 лет назад
I think if you position the light carefully you could get a similar look... the spread of light and quality would change slightly but not significantly.

I enjoy your work and your work flows quite a bit. Just to nitpick and I’m sure you know this: the opposite of red isn't green. It's cyan. The one thing that bothered me about your final image was the line of the back of the couch. It was close to horizontal, but not quite horizontal. Making it horizontal might have given the feel of stiffness, but left the way you did it feels like I want to nudge it level.
@lindsayadlerphoto
@lindsayadlerphoto 5 лет назад
So there are actually a couple of color wheels! Which I always thought to be strange-- but they will actually have different colors match up from one another on the color wheel. So in some that is true. And sure, I totally see the horizontal part.:D

How are you attaching gels to barebulb profoto lights ?
@lindsayadlerphoto
@lindsayadlerphoto 5 лет назад
They have the frosted glass in front (so I don't have to worry about them hitting the flash tube itself). All I do is use gaffers tape and slightly bow out the gel to not touch the front. That's it!
@jedisct1
@jedisct1 5 лет назад
Thanks a ton! That’s what I am doing but the frosted glass quickly gets really hot and I’m always scared that the gel may catch on fire.
