Fantastic in-depth comparison Roman. As someone who never saw the necessity to own an iPad (since I had a 16” MacBook Pro and my iPhone) I can wholeheartedly agree that the experience of using an iPad made such an impact that I actually sold the MacBook Pro (I bought an M1 Mac Mini later on to complement the setup).

The fun factor you mentioned is the biggest one for me. I agree with everything here. I just got the exact ipad pro you have to see if it will help my processing in anyway. I found that It hasn't made my process any better or more efficient and from a work flow stand point(I do mainly sports photos) I cant say I love the iPad. But I have so much fun editing on the iPad. So its basically down to whether I think its worth keeping for the fun experience. And I think it is. Great video!

The iPad will become an obvious choice IF you love the 100V. Imagine the small shoulder bag with just the IPad, 100V and an SD card adapter plus Apple Pencil inside?! That is pretty much my setup with XE4. I just have a couple of lenses (4) in the bag too.

A very concise analysis. I personally use a MacBook but love the idea of editing images on iPad Pro, as it just seems more engaging not only in the editing but by sitting with the family while they watch another pointless series I can edit my images. Maybe I can persuade the missus for me to upgrade my iPad to the Pro 🤔

Useful summary. It seems that the iPad is the more versatile device due to portability and touchscreen. The recent intro of Stage Manager to iPadOS further enhances the ability to use the iPad as a "computer" by hooking it to a monitor when used at your desk. It still has some shortcomings due to the limitations of iPadOS vs MacOS. Two in particular you highlighted is the limitation of batch processing photos in the iPadOS version of Lightroom and the limitations on formatting external drives on the iPad. I think I'm going to get the iPad since I'll enjoy using it as a tablet but with the ability to conenct keyboards, mice and a monitor to use it as a computer too so it seems be the best of both worlds (with some comprises of course). Also, my workflow is almost entirely hinged on the Apple Photos app since I use my iPhone 12 Pro Max as my main camera. I also have a GoPro and drone but the photos from them are also transferred to the GoPro and DJI apps on my iPhone (respectively) and from there are transferred to my Photos App.

I edit all my photos with Lightroom on an Android tablet, and obviously the features are a bit limited compared to the desktop version, but I get by anyway. My edits are always on the "light" side, and the only things I miss are the ones you mentioned: HDR and Pano merging, but I make do with other Android apps because I don't do a lot of those anyway. I stay in front of a computer all day for work, and the last thing I want is keep doing that for editing photos, so an inexpensive Android tabled works really, really well for me: in the evening, I sit on the couch and edit one or two photos, in a very relaxing way.

I am curious how you store all your photos. Do you use a cloud solution so you can access your photos on both your MacBook Pro and iPad? If so how does it work with the photo editing software? I currently use iCloud to store my photos which allows me to access on multiple devices. However I don't know which photo editing software (besides Apple Photos) will easily work with iCloud.

A big advantage of the iPad to me is being able to export photos direct from Lightroom to Apples photo album. That is clunky process to say the least on the Mac. Another reason I prefer to edit on my iPad Pro is the touch screen - being able to pinch to zoom and use Apple Pencil. I got a MacBook mainly to be able to use Topaz Denoise being mainly a wildlife photographer forced to often use high ISO. I also find the Mac good for video editing and better for work using the keyboard

One thing that’s critical to me is that the MacBook cannot have a cellular connection. This may not apply in all locations, but being able to get a data plan for an iPad is a large factor in me looking to upgrade my older iPad Air to an iPad Pro over a MacBook.

I’m using iPad Pro 11 from 2021 and it’s pretty good on the go. I traveled a few times for work or weekends and it’s great to have a device like the iPad to use Lightroom and some internet In the train, when you are sleeping in someone flat..But I’m gonna buy that MacBook Pro 14 because of the screen size and the files save/transfert that is sometime annoying. My eyes feel sometimes tired after many hours spending on the 11 screen size from the iPad. And I’m doing more and more vidéo and I think that the MacBook Pro will be better for that too. Lumafusion is great but miss some possibilities. And I also will connect the MacBook Pro to a external screen later too. Hope you guys can understand my sentences ^

Great video, Roman! Just one question, can you do photo editing on the iPad in Affinity Photo, Lightroom etc. also in Portrait screen rotation? I’m thinking of getting the iPad for photo editing because most of my photos are shot on iPhone Pro in portrait screen rotation. As you can’t rotate the screen on the MacBook, I was thinking the iPad might be a better choice. It works obviously for viewing but I’m not sure if it also works for actual photo editing. Thanks!

19:04 you said this perfectly! iPad IS more enjoyable. I have 5 kids so I’m always on the move, meaning hiding from them sometimes haha. My problem is, iPad is not strong enough to do photo organizing/archiving. My oldest is 12 yrs old, so that means I have 12 years of photos that I’ve been dumping onto external ssd’s cuz I keep telling myself that one day I’ll get a iMac or MacBook. Well long story short, I gave my 3rd gen 12.9 iPad Pro to one of my kids so I’m stuck on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. So I’m torn because I liked the ProMotion 120hz That what sold for me cuz I watch a lot of soccer on it & several shows. We dont have a single tv in the house & we like it that way. Is the latest iPad gen strong enough to handle load/refresh time of photos & videos when I hook external ssd to the iPad? I had 11 inch MacBook Air I think several years ago & it was the worst purchase Ive ever made. The screen was so grainy that I was getting headaches and vertigo. It was just absolutely a horrible experience. Luckily I sold it for almost what I paid for, $1,700ish (i9) so I’m weary on the latest 2022 MacBook Air Which then leaves me the iMac (5k) which might be the best choice right now & in the future I could invest another iPad for myself…. Any advice? Thank you.

Excellent video Roman and agree 100%. As someone who uses an Imac and the IPad Pro I fail to understand why the file management system on the IPad is worse than file management on Windows 95 27 years ago, sure the current version is better than before but it feels nothing more than incredibly crude when the rest of the device feels like a different planet to anything from 1995 !!!

Also , my friend is using macbook pro 14 base model and when he opens 5-6 tabs or 7 in safari and nothing running in the background RAM usage is between 10 -12.30 GB RAM . Do you think it is normal or macbook works like this .

Well done Roman! Fair and comprensive comparison. Much appreciated. I agree with everything you said. I own both macbook and ipad. Sometimes I travel and in that case I desire to take ipad with me, but at the end I found myself getting just macbook, mainly for data loss prevention. For me, it is not acceptable to travel without doing a safe backup of every new image, on daily basis. I don't feel safe to store everything just into ipad. With mac, I can easly backup everything into an external ssd. Unfortunatelly, I can't do that with ipad. The backup of raw files is very annoying on ipad, the process is too slow. Furthermore, I didn't find any way to backup the ipad image editings, unless I can trust a reasonably fast internet connection on the go. So, for my use case, macbook is the only way to be safe. If there is some solution, I'd like to take just ipad with me. Any suggestion?

M1 MacBook Air for me. 1.3kg and it does everything I need. But the only downside is trying to use it on an economy flight. So for that I tend to carry an iPad mini as well. Total weight still only 1.6kg plus you can use the iPad as a "Wacom Tablet" type device with the laptop if you want. For really ultralight trips (underseat bag only) I'll just take the iPad. What I am thinking of doing is switching from Lightroom Classic on the laptop to Lightroom Cloud. As you say, 90% of the functionality is there together with big syncing advantages. (e.g. work on some photos on the laptop in the hotel then continue with the iPad on the aircraft - assuming you've got decent WiFi in the hotel!😂)

You make mention of video editing favoring the MacBook Pro - yet Lumifusion on a properly spec'd iPad Pro is as fast, if not faster than same spec'd MacBook Pro - I get that usability/interface favors the laptop, but I question your assertion that video editing favors the laptop - I guess it depends on what one is doing for post - and besides, Lumifusion project files can be opened in Final Cut on the desktop/laptop if needed.

My main issue with the iPad is the file system. It’s a hassle to use and it often also takes ages just to read an SD card as well (at least in my experience). It’s a great illustration device, but hasn’t been that great for editing in my experience. As a windows user with 3 monitors running four desktop environments simultaneously that I can quickly swap between different tasks, I do find the iPad kinda unusable for productivity multitasking. Its multitasking works great for browsing the web while watching a video or listening to music, but as soon as “real work” gets involved I find I do not have enough space to get stuff done efficiently. Hoping iPadOS 16 will improve this with external monitor support.

With iPad you are going to face unexpected issues like: 1) when you store photos in "files", you cannot watch them since they are comressed noticeably 2) when you import photos into "photos" app, you can watch them, but you cannot export or copy .RAW when you import .JPG + .RAW (so you cannot make a backup of RAWs for ex. this drives me crazy) 3) when you wanna coppy a lot of photos (let's say 500), you need to copy in small batches, otherwise not all the photos will be coppied 4) creating/deleting folders and downloading files in "files" is crazy and many times you will see deleted folder, or you wont see downloaded files, until you restart the "files" app 5) screen brightness is being adjusted by itself and cannot be locked, which may affects your editing I'm personally into digital drawing as well, which is pleasant experience on iPad. Also I'm mostly taking photos while traveling and iPad is powerful device which is capable to do desktop-like stuff anywhere (Affinity photo users).

The biggest issue I've found working on iPad vs MacBook Pro was the colour management. You cannot apply a monitor profile on iPad. The colour calibration on the iPad is just off. I use collections from the desktop version to sync the iPad. The colours were off when I would print or publish to social media from the iPad. I use a hardware calibration method (SpyderXElite) for the laptop monitor and never have an issue with the output. I use the iPad for all my masks or anything with fine detail that using the pen would benefit and the laptop for everything else. It's not an "either or" situation for me. They work really well together if its in the budget.

Hmm must say I never had that issue. The only time it has tripped me is when I left True Tone on. But same goes for mac

Do you recommend turning off true tone, night shift and auto brightness while editing photos on iPad?

protip for ipad: you can just use separate bluetooth magic keyboard and magic trackpad for half the price of ipad magic keyboard instead.

I love the iPad form factor and the pencil, but the iPad M1 just doesn’t have the memory, features or horsepower to compete even with a low end laptop and it’s in the stone ages vs the software on a desktop… There’s just tens of thousands of things it can’t do…

@@snapsbyfox Apple displays are some of the best out of the box and if your edit is decent no one will notice since every display is different anyways.

One more thing that people might not see as a big deal, the fact that you can get an iPad with cellular is huge for people who travel a lot. Not having to tether to your phone all the time and just use the iPad for quick email work or upload to social media and browsing is totally worth the extra 100.

Basically the MacBook slaughters the iPad. And its actually not that much more expensive. Damn the iPad is a failure of a “pro” device.

@@snapsbyfox Despite MacBooks being so much more capable, I sometimes don’t even know where mine is. My five year old iPad Pro 11 inch still works flawlessly, I always have my SD to lightning adapter in my sling with the Fuji XT 20, that’s what I do 90+% of the time. Instantaneous reviewing of photos, importing them, sending them wherever I need to send them. Admittedly I don’t do much editing but if I did, I’m sure the story would be the same.
