Good to hear and see you again, so from here a 👍 I was seriously considering the Sony 50mm.f.1.4 GM, but ended up yesterday buying the Sony 20-70mm.f.4 GM instead, as versatility was ultimately more important to me, for the 20mm. makes me save a wide-angle lens. I also often prefer to have the background a little clearer without it completely removing the focus from the subject, as I think it gives more of a story to the image in street photography and also other situations, but of course that's just part of my style. However, I also have the Sony 35mm.f.1.4 GM which is more my photo length!

Those photos look amazing! I am a hobbyist who bought the Sony, 50mm, f1.8, (nifty fifty/fantastic plastic), used for $140 USD as an upgrade from my 24-70mm kit lens. With the 50mm, f1.8 lens I was hoping for great in focus sharpness and blurry background out of focus images at a fantastic price and compact, easy to carry size. I knew I wasn’t going to get the quality of a $1400 lens but felt it would be good enough. I invested in one “really nice/A+ lens”, (Sony, 24mm, f1.4, GM), that makes me love taking photographs. I’m thinking about the 50mm, f1.4 now as it could change how I use the 50mm focal length. But man, the price!

Thanks for your thoughts. It is not a cheap lens. There are other more affordable options, but they are not exactly the same. The Sigma 50mm F2 Contemporary is excellent, compact and not too expensive. The Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art DG HSM is very sharp, but bigger and heavier than the Sony.

50mm 1.4 is a very creative lens to use ... only got a vintage Takumar 50mm 1.4 and it's totally changing the way I look at the world with my camera

OOPS ! I just spotted an error I made. actually i'm the one that is 79 years old, not my takumar lens ! I purchased my takumar when I was 29 years old, so my lens is 50 years old. it still produces stunning images.

Matti, if you can sell everything else and get either of the 50GM it is worth it. It is the one lens you will always have, and it retains its value. I have the 50/1.2 and it is by far my favorite lens. I bought it brand new at full price, and I have not once regretted it. Get it! :)

my first question would be is the 50mm f2.5 any sharper than the 24-70GM II f2.8. I know its bigger and heavier, but its one lens covering a lot of ground. tyvm for the video!

Wow! One of the best demonstrations of the potentials for f/1.4, with many very compelling shots. Although I have a FF now, I shot with M43 for so many years that I really didn’t fully appreciate the potential for shallow DOF. Even today I find myself struggling to accept the results of shooting at f/1.8 because everything isn’t “tack sharp.” Getting over that is a learning experience for me.

Hey Matti!! That f1.4 looked addicting for real!! And the shots wide open look tack sharp, it must be a great lens for sure. 50mm (in FF equivalent ) is also a focal length I am getting pretty keen on using. But in my personal case, owning Fuji and Olympus gear, I favour portability and size way more than how low of an aperture the lens allows, so no f1.2 or f1.4 lenses for me, I stick with the f2 Fuji lenses and the f1.8 Mzuiko lenses for Olympus. Almost the same result and a third of the price. All the best to you my friend, another great video with great pictures.

I have a 55mm / f 1.8 pentax ntax lens from the 1970s for a 35mm film camera. This seems pretty big by comparison . Obviously has more features.

Of course, your lens has F1.8, no AF and inferior optical design. However, it can still be a very nice lens and I'm sure you have taken many memorable photos on it.

I am not doubting the excellence of this lens in terms of resolution etc., but having been brought up in the film era on 35mm and 6x6 I find the size and weight to be absurd and unnecessary for a 50mm lens. Not to mention the cost of course.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto Год назад
Old film lenses were compact, but they were also very different from modern lenses and that's why it's not a fair comparison, in my opinion. Fortunately though, we can still use those old lenses on our new cameras and we can even shoot film, if digital feels too much😀

@@stevemuzak8526 We want a fast aperture, the best optical quality and the fastest AF and it's very hard to combine those in a very compact package.
@blindsouris
@blindsouris Год назад
@@mattisulanto You are right, focal length divide by aperture give you an idea of the diameter of the "glass" needed. 25mm for f2 35.7mm for 1.4 and glass is not light.
