I use a vintage Pentax 50mm f4 macro lens plus extenders (with an adapter for my Fuji camera). I can get amazing magnification. For most Macro work I usually need to stop down to about f8 or f9 (to get everything in focus) and use manual focus peaking (which is better with macro anyway). The Pentax 50mm macro is an extremely sharp lens and cost about £80 and the extenders £12.

Great video, I love macro-photography and I've experimented before with extremely high magnification factors and with using DSLRs in combination with microscopes. In my opinion, extensions tubes are better than the additional glass elements you can screw on the front of your lens, despite the effect that extension tubes have on the F-number. Question for mr Frost. Have you ever done a video on lens-reversal? I find that you can get better magnification factors using the same lenses with more distance between the lens and the subject using lens-reversal compared to tube extension Many modern microscopes nowadays are suitable for attached a DSLR camera to it. In this instance, the camera body is attached to the microscope without a standard camera lens in between. That way, you can easily get magnification factors of 4-100 times. Though microscopes don't really leave much room for being creative, I'm often amazed by what stuff looks like up close!
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 9 лет назад
All that stuff is so cool! I'm not planning any further videos about it though, unless I take that kind of photography up

Love your channel so much - thanks for all you do! A question I have is that my experience with a Canon 12mm II extension tube on a 60D with a 50mm f/1.4 (and others) was that it squished the distance I could shoot from to the subject. Moving close (to minimal focus distance) and moving as far away as I could (to infinity, or there about) was only 1 inch of travel! So, it created a situation where I could not move around and nicely frame shots like I could with an actual macro lens. Never have I ran across this limitation. I only read "you will lose infinity focus." But that was not what I found. Unless that phrase means "you can only move back and forth an inch" - which I doubt. Will a longer tube grant greater freedom of movement?

Hi Christopher Frost Photography Great, simple, easy-to-understand video on extension tubes. I use the 'dumb' version of extension tubes, without the electronic contacts so I have to focus manually. Shot the following image on Sunday in my kitchen where I had a little visitor. Used a Cnon 70D + 100mm macro f2.8 + manual extension tubes + a Raynox 250DCR attached to the front of my lens: www.flickr.com/photos/48604736@N08/15738765368/ Take care and have a blessed Christmas.

Hello Chris! You are somehow in my mind, first with the Canon 24mm STM lens, now with the extension tubes. Excellent video once again... One question; what should a buyer pay attention for when buying one of those non-Canon extension tubes and why is there such a huge difference in prices?
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 9 лет назад
I chose the Kaavie tubes because they had the best reviews on Amazon for the price you pay. The difference in price is simply because Canon like to rip people off! Although I'm sure the build quality on their tubes is probably slightly nicer than the competition

I think he said 'venerable' ...as in reliable and respected. I have a question too. Both lenses are 24mm. Christopher ..are you saying if you set the zoom lens at 24mm you get a different magnification than you do with the 24mm pancake?
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 9 лет назад
Well, in this case I was testing the 24-105 at 105mm, to demonstrate that telephoto focal lengths aren't affected as well as wide angles. So you can treat it as a 105mm lens in this case. In answer to your question, the 24-105 and the 24mm STM both have different maximum magnifications, simply because they're built differently - the 24mm STM is much better in this regard than the 24-105mm. Different lenses perform better or worse in this regard, which is something I try to demonstrate in my regular reviews :)

That was a complete different review , and actually a preety good one, the question I wnat to make, is did you have try to use an extension tube (the small one) with an ef-s lens (24mm pancake) with your 6d ? and if so, how did that work..So myt question did the smallest extension tube could work as an adapter to have ef-s lens on full frame bodies, and if so, what we gain except the cost and what we lost except hte infinity focus??
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 9 лет назад
That's a good question, so I've just gone and tested it for you. Yes, you can use an extension tube to sneakily put an EF-S lens on a full-frame camera. You will see reduced vignetting around the side. But even with my 12mm extension tube, I couldn't get my subject close enough to the lens to focus! So it doesn't really seem to work properly.

+Nerte For insects and the like, a long-focal-length macro lens (e.g. 100mm) is the way to go. The short focal lengths are best for product photography and other still-life & things that won't move or bite you (e.g. flowers).

Question on the extention tube, by concept don't the lens adapter also add the effect of extensions? Coz they add distance between the lens and the sensor? Would a EF 50mm f1. 8 adapted on to the Canon mirrorless m3 have any effects of magnifications which is already coupled with the 1.6x crop

I might get a 16mm extension tube and use it with my GH4 and Panasonic 30mm macro and get a 1.53x magnification, although being short, you have to get quite close to your subject anyway which isn't always good. I really need to get a longer macro lens in the future. I am wondering now if you had a Canon MPE-65 x5 macro lens if this would work? Might not as you could be be too close to the subject, especiall you'd need a huge DOF which wouldn't work well because of diffraction , but if it did you'd get a 5.3x or so magnification with a 25mm extension tube, or get two 25mm tubes and get an even closer 5.7x or so magnification. Too bad I don't yet have a Canon MP-E 65, although I defiantly want one in the future. Do extension tubes effect image quality at all?

Nice video, comme toujours, but... I have to concur with the "fussy" commenter who took you to task for your pronunciation of decimals. Hearing "zero point fifty five" makes my ears bleed. Also, more substantively, you say in the video that the magnification will be higher for APS-C sensors. No: the magnification is the ratio of image size to object size. This is independent of the sensor size. All you get is the usual pseudo "magnification" caused by the cropping of the image by the smaller sensor.
