In this video I travel to mainland Ecuador with a Canon 5D IV and Tamron 150-600mm G2 Lens combination. I use this camera and lens while photographing TONS of birds, including super quick hummingbirds, colorful songbirds, toucanets and more.
However, since the last time I was in Ecuador I've switched to a Sony camera system including a Sony A9II camera and Sony 200-600mm lens. On future trips to Ecuador I'll be using my Sony system. I am offering a small group (max. of 6) guided photo safari to Ecuador coming up in November 2026. donmammoserphoto.com/photo-to...
This video is just an example of the type of images you can expect if you join me in Ecuador, even when using basic equipment and proper photographic technique, which I'll teach you. Quick moving birds aren't easy to photograph, but I show that with patience, practice, and being in the right location with a bit of know-how you can get excellent results.
Ecuador is a very safe, highly diverse, and wonderfully friendly country to visit. As mentioned, I'll be taking a group of interested photographers there once again in November 2026. Click this link to find out more:

Really amazing shots!!! I was on the fence about this lens after seeing relatively very few stores carrying it in Canada vs. Nikon 200-500... but your video has sealed it for me. I am looking forward to pairing this beauty with my D500, and setting forth into the beautiful wilderness of British Columbia. Thank you!

Hi and thanks for watching. Yes, all images in this video taken with Tamron 150-600mm G2 lens. This is a quality product and I had great fun with mine for many years. Good technique helps as well. I have LOTS of years of practice.

Looks like Equador is amazing place for bird photographers. Friend of mine goes there all the time and he's an amazing bird photographer just like you! Thanks for sharing.

Great video Don! I just came across a couple of your video's while searching the Tamron G2, I'm wondering if the pics in the video's have been sharpened any or is this lens that good? I have the Sigma 60-600mm Sport, but it's just too heavy for taking on long hikes and I'm thinking about getting the Tamron because it's two pounds lighter than the Sigma. You now have a new subscriber!

Hi Dennis, The images in the video were put through my normal processing, but I try to minimize what I do in post. The lens is good if your technique is spot-on and you have good light. I've since moved on to a Sony system which has much improved AF. The Tamron 150-500mm for Sony is very good. I've reviewed that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OT8RV-LfAuc.html Thanks for taking the time to watch.

Great video and excellent photographs. Can this lens be used and can we get image quality close to this on a crop sensor camera.
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto 3 года назад
Hi, thanks for taking the time to watch. Yes, this lens can be used on crop sensor cameras and then you have the equivalent focal length of about 225-900mm (on a 1.5x crop camera). More reach is always good for birds. I used this lens on a crop sensor camera for years with very good results. Proper technique is imperative however when you have this much zoom.

Hi Don. Beautiful photos by someone who’s obviously honed his craft. I’ve heard the Tamron and Sigma 150-600’s are soft at the long end. Your experience? Why didn’t you take your Sony gear for this adventure ? Thanks and Great Shooting !
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto 3 года назад
Hi Robert, thanks. I find that if my technique is good the Tamron lens is plenty sharp at 600mm. I have no experience with Sigma lenses so can't comment on that. I only recently got into the Sony system and because of Covid didn't get to do my Ecuador trip lately. Going again in October 2021, this time with the Sony gear. Can't wait!

How you can go in Ecuador if there are a covid restriction?
@DonMammoserPhoto
@DonMammoserPhoto 3 года назад
Hi, Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Ecuador is open to tourists with a few restrictions such as having a negative Covid test no more than 3 days prior to travel. Things are opening up more and more and even those restrictions listed above should be lifted by the time we go in late October. Let's hope!
