I live 9000 feet up the side of a mountain an hours drive from the nearest town. Just as good as quarantine. Astrophotography is the cherry on top of all the other time-killing activities. Using a Black Shark 3 Pro but was shocked to find my ancient ZTE ZMax Pro was even able to produce tolerable color images of the Milky Way as long as there is barely any light pollution at all.

The huawei smartphones also have a mode that is called lichtmalerei in germany (so probably lightpainting in english) its on the "more" option far off to the right on your camera settings, and there is a point that is exactly designed to take pictures of the stars. I am having my huawei smartphone for almost 2 years now and i got some really good results with this mode so you all should give it a try. Also if the sky is clear and you have a full moon you can make crystal clear shots of the moon with the 50x zoom. I got multiple actually. God i wish i could post some pictures here.

I was out in Iceland and saw polar lights. The only thing I knew was to setup the "shutterspeed" high so you could intake more lights. Many people around me were amazed and i endet up reading a little bit more about photography that day. Fast forward a year or two and I'm sitting out on the field with the girl I fancy and we start talking about stars and polar lights and i just got the idea of trying to take a foto of the night sky. It turned out pretty well (you could see alot more Stars then with the naked eye which was fascinating by itself). We soon discovered that having a tri-pod might be very helpful since putting the phone onto wet grass isn't too nice. Now I'm trying to learn even more about everything so I can ask her out and take real good pictures with the great advice you gave me in this video. I'm pretty sure if it's as fun as I've recently had I'm going to get some better fotographing equipment then my huawei Mate20X

you can get some crazy good results with a phone shooting in RAW and stacking like 10 to 15 shots with dark frames in Sequator. Now, that's not what a 'typical' smart phone user would do lol but it's worth mentioning that getting out of jpeg at least, saves a ton of detail and color of the milkyway

Moved from Houston's humid, light pollution soup to 9000ft in the Colorado mountains. Decided to try my old ZTE Zmax Pro and I was able to capture the Milky Way in color. Then pulled out my new Black Shark 3 Pro and got bright color and nice sharpness on Milky Way. Was surprised a gaming phone did so well. Also took 30 minutes of 16 sec exposures and turned them into an animation and was very pleased. These were the first astrophotography I had done since video cameras on Newtonion scopes in the 90's. Now I freeze my arse off several nights a month playing with my new hobby. Looking to switch to a P40 or Note 20 Ultra or the P50 if it hits the market soon enough. I'm too itchy to wait very long.,,🙂

@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 4 года назад
The only way is to shoot in manual focus and play around with it at the infinity point. you might have to move it ever so slightly until it is at the point that works for your phone. It definitely does put a bit more red into the shot...but if you shoot in raw, you should be able to edit this out. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Do you have any settings for taking Moon shots with your android phone? Great videos!
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography Год назад
Hi Mary, I don't, but it would be worth googling moon photography to see if any other creators have one. The only thing I would say is that you need a long lens, a bit like the telephoto zoom lens in the P30 Pro. This will help you get closer to the moon and fill the frame with it. I also think there is a formula for the settings, called the looney 11 rule ... 😆 the moon is a lot brighter than you'd think so the settings are very different to normal night time photography. The looney 11 rule is that you start with your aperture at f11, and then match your iso number to your shutter speed. so with the camera in manual, set the iso to 100 and then the shutter speed to 1/100, or if the iso is at 400, the shutter at 1/400. This will expose the moon well, but then anything else in the shot will be very dark. I hope that helps.

It was in 2018/2019 when I discovered "astrophotography" I think. I have only a Huawei p smart 2018 which is not the best one for that, but I was impressed what the camera can do in the "Pro"-Mode. I did this year some useable shots of Neowise the comet! At the moment I am thinking about a new smartphone. Maybe the Huawei P30 (or pro), but I also really like the Google Pixel 4a with it's special astrophotography mode. But what I am not like at the Google: you can do nothing manual. So the Huawei P30 (pro) seems a good choice or should it be a Samsung? What do you think? :-)
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 года назад
The lack of manual controls with the google would put me off that camera. I'm pretty happy with the P30pro although it is a bit annoying that it resets to a semi auto mode in the pro mode instead of everything staying on manual...you have to go into each setting to bring each one out of manual...but after that it can produce some really good results....for a phone. I haven't tried the samsung either so couldn't comment on that... THanks for watching 😁👍

1600 ISO, 20sec shutter. If still white, start reducing the iso and keep shutter constant. The main problem might be light pollution. We are trying to amplify the star light. If you are in a city you will end up amplifying the light pollution.

I have no idea how you got the results you die I shot mine at ISO 640 and 2 sec. I set the focus by picking a distant light and then focusing on it. It was a few clicks below the max range for infinity. I only took a straight random picture of just a night sky. But had pinpoint stars and good contrast. There is no absolute this is the way to do it. It took me about 10 shoots to get it right. But I had done quite a bit of real astrophotography. cheers
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 2 года назад
The settings you are using aren't the best to get any part of the milkyway in your photograph. At 2 seconds and ISO 640, this is 7 times less light than with these settings I was using ... and that isn't taking into account the aperture your camera has either. You also didn't mention what the bortle rating was at the location you were at or how much moonlight there was at the time you took it. You are right that there are different ways to get the same thing in photography, but with wide field astrophotography, the settings do fall into quite a narrow range as it normally is in really dark locations, with very little light apart from that which is emitted from the stars and the milkyway ... which are at constant luminance. If you were getting a good exposure with the settings you were using, that suggests that there was too much light pollution, and this would bleach out the stars and the milkyway, so this would be why you are not getting the same results. Thanks for watching 👍
