I just was told the audio is slightly off on the right side. I did the editing this time as stephen and dan are busy on something else. I'm not sure why the audio isn't even on both sides. I can not fix that now that the video is posted. Please understand, that was not my intention.
The most important thing for us is that we can hear you and the information you are sharing is Gold. No worries Fro. We understand but most importantly thank you for sharing the photography side of documenting historical events like this.
Will there be a way to get the raw photos of this if they're released or at least higher resolution ones? My guess is that the originals are restricted since they're shot for journals... I'd really like to see the stuff more clearly and in detail (also maybe the settings used)... Certainly amazing photographs either way!
The photo with the American flag reminds you just how powerful an image can be. I don't care who you are. It took guts for the photographer to keep clicking away, and it took guts for a man who'd just been shot to raise his fist in defiance, giving us these images.

I was a stringer photojournalist for AP WAY back in the 70's. Watching the events as they happened and then watching this video took me back into the Zone. I was one of the press pool photographers photographing Pres. Jerry Ford. The rules were 1) GET THE SHOT! 2) Get the really GOOD shots. After that it was off to the darkroom for a couple hours more work. With a motor driven Nikon FTN, it was 3 FPS at 1/1000. Burns through a 36 exposure role of Tri-X (ISO 400) in 12 seconds. The modern camera equipment makes it so much easier to concentrate on getting the shot.
But you were better with manual focus analog cameras than today's photographers (without anything detracting from their skill) who have 120 ftg/s cameras, instant and subject-tracking autofocus, ISO auto, sending real-time photos to the editorial staff.
@@clabart True. We were more "One with the Camera". Had to follow focus and learn to anticipate the shot. Had to set ISO, shutter and aperture in advance. If you took the camera away from your eye, it was poke and hope. No shooting a half dozen shots then looking at the rear screen to see what you got. When you are concentrating on that, something else may be happening that you are now missing. You'll see what you got back in the darkroom when you put a mostly dry photo on the Fax machine.
local newspaper with a Canon AE-1 and 2fps winder and a Canon F-1n and half dozen different primes. no zooms (at least not for me. i didnt trust them and they were SLOOOooooowwww back then) lots and lots of Tri-X and Ektachrome 400 for the color images. 1984-1985 and then i enlisted in the Air Force
@@truthsayers8725 72 to 76 here. Ordered Tri-X by the carton. No color. Didn't have the time to do three color separations. As well as most papers didn't print color unless it was for the Sunday editions front page. Pushed processed Tri-X in acufine all the way up to 1200 for basketball, volleyball and indoor track & field. And you're right about zooms. Vivitar was king back then in the zooms. Todays zooms are so much better than primes back then. I guess progress does have its place.
The flag photo is definitely the best. It was an incredible image and I actually couldn’t believe the photographer was able to get such an amazing shot among all the confusion and chaos. Really great photo

I think top left photo is absolutely brilliant. Showing flag, security with glasses, Trump injured and a woman trying her best to protect the subject. Absolutely brilliant photo. Skill to get it.
A tragic event for Trump, the person who died, and for America. Yes, amazing work by the photographers. Pulitzer, yes. With photography on RU-vid being so dominated by gear reviews, it's refreshing, even under such horrific circumstances, to have content about photography and photojournalism. Thank you.
I’m an incoming freshman at the University of Texas who will be studying journalism with a focus in photojournalism, and this event has made me that much more ready to continue down that path. Loved this video Jared.
I had the pleasure of working with Anna Moneymaker on a couple of occasions. We were two different companies working on the same assignment. Very talented photographer for sure.
Nonsense - it is not the bullet. It is the humidity in the air becoming visible for an instant as the bullet cuts thru the air increasing the air pressure and then the air decompressing instantaneously. As air rapidly decompresses it cools from the Venturi effect and moisture in the air condenses out and becomes visible - in this case, for an instant. The bullet itself would have appeared as a blurry mass at the front of the humidity trail if it was photographed.
@@tienmou68 nice nobody asked about ballistics. It's still impressive that a modern still camera captured the moment with such clarity without being some fancy slow motion camera.
My dad, Lynwood Pelham, was a photojournalist for Life magazine, back in the day. I have photos and have heard his stories about running into the battle. He was rescued by Marines in wars he has covered, brazenly went onstage with Fidel Castro, walked up to Khrushchev when the press were told to stay away, etc, etc, etc. Your breakdown of the photos was spot on! I didn't know the photos were streamed back to a source who could post the photos almost in real time. My dad processed his own photos and sent them with the negatives to Life headquarters in New York.
Some really fabulous photos there. Great analysis, Jared! To my eye that first shot with the flag and the fist in the air is quite possibly one of the finest and most perfectly timed shots in American political history. The framing, placement, timing, exposure, and everything else are all absolutely perfect. It is without question a Pulitzer worthy shot, and may be remembered as one of the greatest ever. Experience for that photojournalist took over in a moment of crisis, and he rose to the occasion.

Jared - I have never made a comment on the many photo videos I have watched you share and have thoroughly enjoyed in the past, but I must say: There is something about this particular photo post from you that was unusually profound. I'm not sure exactly what it was, but it was very powerful. What you said, the way you said it, the passion - was not just informative, but inspired. As a person who has been obsessed with photography since about age 11, thank you for breaking down such 4 wildly "intense" photos so perfectly, and giving well-desrved credit to the photographers who got such incredible shots under such incredible pressure. Amazing professionalism of the photojournalist when you break it down... Most of us looking at the photos would never understand what the photographers went through.
Your instinct as a photographer is to get in there and raise your camera... The thing that's long and black and you hold in a very suspicious manner. Scary AF.
11:26 I saw this photo for the first time obviously as we all did on the day of the event, and I instantly knew this was going to be a photo that would go down in history. That photo will be displayed throughout the US and hopefully in history books for decades and decades to come. Great shots Evan

Moneymakers photo is absolutely amazing. It’s the only one you are showing that looks thought out not just “yeah I’m still pressing the shutter.” The others as photographers are great but the last one is just wow.
I am half way through this... I want to give congrats to you. You put on your photo-j hat and have done an excellent job analyzing what happened. This video is a keeper. I've followed you for a few years now and enjoy your work, but this is the best. OK, back... I woke up early to watch the rest of this. You should be very proud of this work. If I were still teaching, I'd play this in my class followed by discussion. Fascinating that the images were transmitted so fast. The initial reaction from conservatives was the image without the flag was cropped. Now looking at this, I believe it was just the angle the photographer was shooting at. In photo-j, it's mostly a dodge and burn world of editing, and even that should be light. Anyway, again... kuddos to this. I'm going to repost.
That image with trump covered in blood, fist held high and the American flag in the background. That’s a powerful powerful image. Love or hate Trump, you have to acknowledge the weight this photo carries. It epitomizes what it means to be American. This photo makes me think of a few words. Power, strength, overcoming, bravery, freedom. It’s enough to make any true patriot shed a tear.
Thank you for making this video. I was talking to all of my photographer friends of how iconic and badass these photos were. And explaining to non photographer friends the mindset and balls you gotta have as a photojournalist to get the shot no matter what.
Yeah the one with the flag is the most powerful I would think as an overall picture I would have got the pictures. Definitely would have got those pictures but an apprentice would not get those pictures. They couldn't work quite quick enough. Their chances are they'd be on aperture priority which would be crap
It's a great self pictures. They work together actually. I will say something. You haven't got time to change cameras. When things like this happen, you use what you got at the time in your hand. There's no way you can keep changing cameras. It would take too long. I haven't been in a journalistic situation like this for a few years, but I've done hell of a lot of music and like with music. I normally stick to one lens so I'm not getting too complicated there
I was a photojournalist for 25+ years and I mostly understand the thoughts of the photographers that were there. I was on the job when we still shot B&W and slide film and digital came in late in my career, but the reactions to the situation is the same. I was always told to get the angles no one else was trying. These photographers did a great job getting those shots.
Thank you for this video Jared! It would be awesome to get an interview with Evan Vucci on the podcast but I suspect he's going to be getting a lot of requests (especially after he wins another Pulitzer!) as well as just being busy in general doing his job. Maybe Stephen could record Evan giving you a martial arts lesson? 🙂
Wow, this is an amazing breakdown of all of these incredible photos. I honestly would have a much harder choice picking the winner after watching this. Moneymaker’s photo is incredible because it captures Trump’s state of mind after he was hit. He looks shocked, in disbelief, there’s so much chaos, you can see him processing the situation he’s in. The photo with the bullet…wow, you’re so right. That picture could have been much more gruesome. I like that it’s also direct proof that it was a bullet that flew by and not a shard from the teleprompters which were all still intact when this event happened. The picture with the flag is undoubtedly iconic for sure, but the other photo also captures the resilience Trump decided to show after he’d regained some composure. What’s clear to me is these photos are all incredible, and they’ll all capture a part of this story. I feel like you need all of them!! Amazing work by the photographers, amazing work on this video. ❤❤❤

Thank you for this; from the perspectives of the photographers. I was watching the photographers in the endless playbacks, and you have given them names and who they where shooting for. I heard part of an interview with Doug saying 40 some frames per second.
Great review of photojournalism moments. The discussion regarding the movement of the press photographers is great. Similar to your points you made at the workshop over the weekend about working the angles. As always...great video.
I was hoping you would make a video like this! Thank you Jared! Personally, I believe image #1,3 and 4 are the strongest images. Each is just so unique and grabs the attention of the viewer, tells a different story and elicits a different emotion. I dont think I could pick just one. As part of a photostory these are simply amazing photographs and will go down in history thanks to the skills of the photojournalists and the tech they had available. No other historical event, to my knowledge, was able to be captured in not just one, but multiple award winning images. Look forward to future videos if you can interview the photographers.

Watching the video, I turned to my wife and said THAT GUY just won the Pulitzer. Such an amazing job of keeping your wits and capturing history. Great insight into how the Sony is transmitting continuously. A far cry from the suitcase-sized Leafax I used in the 80s when stringing for AP Boston
Also, due to the bullets trajectory, it would not be traveling perfectly horizontal. It was shot from 400 feet away, so it would be on a downward angle. There is more to prove that it's fake. Then there is to defend that it's true.
@@billg.9087 Okay, I'll go along with that. But explain the math when the bullet is traveling. 3250 feet per second. Bullets do not make vapor trails. And a 22 caliber bullet is so small set. It's going to be almost invisible to the naked Eye. And unless that photo is cropped around 500%. You won't even see that bullet, it's a fake photograph.
@@billg.9087 Did you calculate the shutter speed required to capture that bullet? Did you calculate the amount of cropping the photograph would require to see that bullet?
@gordonmiles9995 seem to have lost previous response. But yes...1/2000sec would show that much travel. What appears to be about 15-16 inches. The 1/8000 stated should only show about 4 inches of travel.
@gordonmiles9995 .....but you got me looking at this a lot more closely. I do believe it's a real shot, but not the one that hit his ear. As someone mentioned, his hand was coming up in response to the hit (i rewatched the video). That shot was long gone by then. If actually taken at 1/8000sec, it wouldn't show that much travel.......unless much closer to the photographer. Also, the elevation is too low for where the ear was hit. So, I suspect this was a later shot (there were 4 or 5) that came much closer to the photographer. Regardless, under the conditions....a helluva picture!!

It's the idea of being a photojournalist for the President or former President for me. Like what...? If there is ever a dream job that I would want so badly, so desperately, even if it's to be an intern photographer again, I would aspire to be a photojournalist, capturing moments as they happen with pure honesty and emotion and having a profound impact through visual storytelling of my photos. HOLY... I really appreciate the detailed analysis that you provided when reviewing the iconic photographs from this past weekend. Your insights truly enhanced my understanding and appreciation of the historical significance captured in those images.
For about a quarter of a century, I worked as a TV sports reporter (French TV) in New Brunswick Canada. I have a lot of admiration and respect for photographers and cameramen because, as you said, they have to be ready to capture any important moment. This is something that needs experience and a lot of concentration. Courage as well, as demonstrated in this particular event. People sitting lazily in their living room have little understanding about how difficult the job can be at times. This is why they are called professionals.
@@monsieurgolem3392 I don't feel competent to judge since I don't work in the field. That being said, I've watched a couple of videos on RU-vid raising questions about this issue and others. We can't but wait and see if mistakes were made, voluntary or otherwise.
I have just been sobbing this entire video. Not based on the event but the PURE beauty of every photo. I've never cried so much looking at photographs other than my own wedding.
The video interview of Doug Mills on how he captured the path of the bullet includes the metadata page from the shot--I was able to get a screen grab of the page (sorry, I'm unable to paste it into this comment). Yes, he was shooting with the Sony A1, f/1.6, 1/8000. So he was using a fast lens that allowed him to shoot at 1/8000 and capture the trail.
I wonder if Evan Vucci gets a platinum card from Sony that allows him to borrow any piece of gear and lens for as long as he wants? "Sony: what Pulitzer winners use."
@@froknowsphoto this is becoming true in a lot of cases it’s a brave New World out there wouldn’t be surprised if the number of paid internships outweighed the unpaid internships by a large margin

I'm just a hobbyist photographer, but these photos make me want to go into photojournalism. Photographing history is a crazy concept. I just don't know where to start.
