Wow, Alan, been a bit of time since we’ve seen you release a vlog but when you do, there’s no half measures. That was absolutely phenomenal and those images were simply breathtaking. Going need to watch this again, not to get the answers for the give away, but simply to let the chin hit the floor through looking at these images once more 👍🏼👍🏼

Great nightscapes ! These are the first I've seen taken with an astro-modified SONY. The ways in which you used the Benro Geared Head: 1. Tracked panorama of the Milky Way core at Atacama. 2. Keeping the sun and moon centered during the total eclipse. 3. Panorama of the ALMA radio telescopes and the Milky Way.

This head looks really useful. 1. Fine adjustment for the eclipse to keep framing and removing sag with heavy lenses 2. Panorama photography to get the right amount of overlap 3. Replacement for a wedge base for Polar alignment again for reducing sag and increasing precision in pointing at the 'celestial south pole'

That altitude sickness would've broken me lol. 3 uses: 1) Small/fine adjustments that allowed you to keep the sun in the centre of the frame 2) Makes the process of making a panorma much easier than when using a ballhead plus no sag 3) Eases the polar alignment when using a tracker especially in southern hemisphere due to no Polaris.

The Benro 1) has a spirit level to make leveling easier 2) used the Benro geared head to make your polar alignment 3) using the geared head to make the pano easier BTW - I had altitude sickness once and afterwards I did a little digging into what not to do, and what you can do to prevent it. I have used altitude sickness tablets - and they were awful (made me sick, dehydrated me) I have found that the only way to prevent Altitude sickness, is to sleep between 5,0000 and 6,000 ft the night before (24 hours). Besides being ill, altitude sickness is dangerous,

The Benro Geared Head seems to be the perfect tripod head because: 1. You can keep panos level very easily, liek you did in when taking panos 2. You can make tiny adjustments to your composiotion, like during the solar eclipse 3. I guess it's also great for getting polar alingment if you use a star tracker

Really nice captures Alyn :O Here are the three ways you used the Benro Geared Head: - This video: Easy alignment to the Earth's rotating Point in the Night sky (no PolarStar in the Souther hemisphere) - Alma Telescope: Easier and quicker panoramas by rotating the camera and keeping the vertical/horizontal angle - Solar Eclipse: Fine Adjustments when shooting with longer focal lengths (it helps that the geared head has no sag after alignment) So that's from me, I really love your videos and I have been following your journey for a while now. I hope I will also get into astrophotography at some time, I just don't have the equipment and possibilites right now though :D Keep it up Alyn

Hi Alyn Love your work, thanks for sharing. Query on kit re panoramas - do you use an indexed rotator? All my pano shots have been quite simple so far. I have yet to start serious astro shooting albeit that is one of my goals. I have to carefully set angle of rotation (e.g. 15 degrees) manually - easy enough when doing say 2-3 shots in daylight, but more trouble in dark with the numbers of shots to stitch that you are demonstrating here. Ditto with rows of panos. Looks complex and time consuming and could easily be spoilt if making one setting error amongst multiple shots. If say shooting 20 sec exposures multiplied by say a 7 pano in 3 rows or 21 shots..... that's a cumulative 7 min shoot time plus adjustment set-up. Not to mention stitching time and complexity in post. I suspect an indexed rotator would be a big help? Perhaps even better (if it exists) a pre-programmable gimbal that could handle all movement steps for you - just executng your pre-defined plan e.g. from defined central position x .... make 5 shot pano in 3 rows. Any thoughts re feasability and could a gimbal replace your clock movement to track star movement?
