I think the act of creation matters. Whether you share it or not. I’ve been reading The Mind of the Maker by Dorothy Sayers lately. I highly recommend it. It delves into what it means to create on a deeper level.

This is a really great tip coz everyone thinks about the number of followers but not about the right people who can bring work for us. Thank you. 💚🙂

And I thought I was the only one doing Poo Marketing! I asked one customer, "how did you decide upon choosing me for this job," and they said, "well, it's like this. I was sitting on the toilet scrolling through my social media feeds and..." And thus Poo Marketing made me a flushing success. 🤔🤣

This advice sounds lovely. By the way I’ll tell you that liking my comment the other day directly caused me to come back to the thread and engage with it more. So if you were wondering at all if that worked, it did. I’ve not had a creator do that before, and was certainly not expecting you to.

This is an interesting point, the one you have. But i can't stop thinking about all the work one put's in creating an image, a story, and them the work goes on the "webs" and it just dies. No one see's it. It's kind of heart breaking and crushing at the same time.

Sure, using Instagram gives you an additional point of contact in your marketing strategy. However, I also know plenty of successful commercial photographers and freelance cgi artists who are not on Instagram. And with all the social media fatigue taking place some people want to stay away from it as much as possible. If you want to be successful in your marketing you have to know your audience. So much so, that some other, 'old fashioned' ways of marketing can bring you a long way. Additionally, I would argue if you were doing complex, photorealistic, compositing work, combining it with a cgi scene that requires a ton of photorealistic texturing, you would have a portfolio project a month at best. Making posting on Instagram multiple times a week much harder. I would also argue that by spending so much time I would rather choose to direct mail that work than to use Instagram. Or how do you see it?

Do you just search for "art buyer" or "photography agent"? And what's the job description of the person working in the advertising agency that I should be in contact with? I agree 100% Instagram is great for extra marketing that’s relatively easy, that’s what the platform is for, as a matter of principle I don’t use it though, I can afford not to, my main source of income is salary work. I do not like Meta and I do not want to bring them extra content and revenue if I do not need to. I use Anki on the toilet when I’m not looking at memes, it’s great for memorising tons of stuff, and all it takes long-term is poop marketing time.

I have Instagram, Vero and Twitter accounts. It doesn’t matter how many likes i get or followers. If i went by likes, then my content is controlled by those likes, because that is all id be pursuing. Followers? I just have to be consistent, and they’ll be an audience or contact. Followers don’t include family and friends, they’re just family etc. they’ll follow anyway. The thing that i don’t like about instagram is that now, i’m getting. people asking me to post the images on their community for paid promotion. So i’ve checked some of these accounts and they’re random That’s why I signed with Vero. I can post better quality images. I’ll still post on instagram but it is a general personal account

In one of your videos you shared that work for professional/commercial photographers may come in seasons. How should one use Instagram during slow seasons (when work is minimal)?

I have 381 followers on my (non photography) Facebook account which brings in $600k per year. I only post when I have a space in my calendar. When I do, I instantly get another 3-6 months work. On the other hand I have another photography account with 15000 followers which I post to daily and brings in precisely nothing but is fun. Which is more effective? (I think you might have a point ;-) )

I haven't used instagram in over 7 month. My posts never got any likes and kept seeing to many videos and getting to many notifications that had nothing to do with my account.

Have you ever thought of yourself as a "key Person" and/or have you ever given an assist to a photographer on IG by simply clicking follow so your 200 key people may (however unlikely) see their IG? This is a just wondering type of question, if you have done something like this would you be willing to tell us how it turned out?
