In this Bird photography vlog we travel to Ottawa, Ontario in search of the majestic Great Grey Owl. This elusive Phantom of the North is a "lifer" for us, and we are willing to go great lengths to find and photograph one.
Our Great Grey Owl Report: thebirdnerds.ca...
Thanks to some friendly bird photographers along the way, we were able to find the owl and take some amazing pictures using our Canon 7D Mk II and 400mm F/5.6 Camera lens.

I'm new to your channel & really enjoying them, as this makes the 7th working in reverse order... The great grey perched in the conifers with that one eye lit, great shot & composed correctly I might add! Catching the bird or wildlife in general in their natural environment, composing it correctly is extremely challenging & is one of the elements I love most about shooting birds in particular. The equip. you guys are using is very close to what I am currently using too! This is why I love using a tripod, as I went the cheapie route for a number of years (8) using a spindly aluminum Benro, ( got the job done ) with a Manfrotto 229 Super Pro Panhead attached with the hexagon plates. I have added a carbon fiber to the mix now, 42 mm top legs, 4 sections by PMG ( ProMediaGear ) with a Acratech GP locking lever ballhead sitting on a RRS leveler, ( for panorama landscapes ) all Arca Swiss compatible... PMG makes a Jr. gimbal that has my name all over it! Someday... I can visualize my 400 attached to it! Thank you, Bill Farr... Vermont, USA... :-) PS: It was most gracious of Mr. Stephen to offer his big lens... :-)

Wow, you guys are committed. All that way for a bird that can leave at any second. I really like the pure look of your photos. It would have been great to catch him inflight still very nice shots.

Thank you SloDays, we appreciate your comments. To capture that wing span in a flight shot would be something else! An aspiration for our next encounter.

When it comes to photographing birds. You guys got lucky with the range of birds you have in canada america. The birds we mainly get in the uk. Most of them are not the most brightly coloured birds or even worth photographing. Maybe a few exceptions like but not many lol.

The Great Grey Owl is also found in Scandinavia. Unfortunately not as far south as Denmark, though, I think it's a marvellous bird! We do, however, allegedly have a few of the Eurasian Eagle Owl (Big brother of the American Great Horny Owl), and I hope to some day photograph one. But I mostly see Tawny Owls. Very good looking owl, although smaller. They're common, but nocturnal and stay hidden during the day, so they're hard to photograph. You mostly see their silhouette in the dark and hear their "Oohoooo".

It is a thrill for us to see any owl! The word is overused, but the owl species is truly majestic!

Beautiful! Did you use autofocus or focus manually for these amazing images of the great grey owl?

I like your videos. It seems you guys really travel a lot for birding, wish I could do that too more often. The Great Gray Owl is truely an impressive bird. I haven't found one myself yet but just recently read about a good spot in Finland, were these owls are very unimpressed by humans, so that some people even get shots with wide-angle lenses and the 70-200ds. Maybe you know the book "The handbook of bird photography" by Marcus Varesvuo, Bence Mate and Jari Peltomäki? They discribe the place in there. Admitted, that would be a "great length" to travel from North America, but this book also covers more interesting sites and tips. (No I don't get any commission ;)

Thank you! No, I hadn't heard of that book before, but I will check it out. We have heard that there is a GGO in Montreal that is tolerant of humans nearby. We thought about driving the extra 2 hours from Ottawa to see it, but we ran out of time. Thanks again for the comment.

What did you think of the difference between the 500mm and the 400mm you shoot?

Hello, i have the 70-300mm f5.6 canon lens no IS. And i really want to get some sharp bird photos, but this lens won't let me do that :). I was wondering on a scale of 1-10 how much do you guys recommend this lens to someone else? and maybe you could do a review and test how close it can focus, how far away you can take photos, etc etc. Thanks guys! :D

Hi Guys! Why not come to B.C. in the summer. They are all over the place in the high country near Kamloops. I think that your timing might have been off a tad as you need to get there early in the morning to catch them at their best. Always thought that they were difficult to find but like anything else it is all about immaculate timing. Once you know their schedule it is as easy as finding a barred owl here on Vancouver Island. Take care and great video! Special "Hi!" to Stephen Stephen. Met him years ago when he came out here to B.C. - Nanaimo. Steve Large - www.larges.ca

B.C is definitely on our list of places to visit! And you are absolutely right - more often than not, it's about being in the right place at the right time and knowing their behaviours and habits can help you perfect that timing. Thanks for the comments Steve, or should I say 'Owl Man'? :) Happy birding!
