Join me as I visit the stunning RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs to photograph Gannets.
After struggling to capture images of puffins in flight I decided to try again only this time on a slightly bigger bird... A few people messaged me after my Puffin video saying that my 500mm prime lens may have been the reason why I had such a low success rate, so this time I tried both my 500mm f4 and my 100-400mm zoom lens!
I hope you enjoy the video and if you haven't already I'd really appreciate it if you could subscribe to my channel. I'm so grateful for the subscribers I've received so far and look forward to seeing how the channel can grow going forward.
.................
If you'd like to join me for some puffin workshops next year then please contact me through my website (link below).
.................
The camera equipment I used for this video;
Canon 1dxmkii
Canon 500mm f4
Canon 100 - 400mm ii
GoPro Hero7
Edited in iMovie
(My canon M50 is due to be back in action by the end of August and I thank you for bearing with me through the patchy audio as I can't mount a mic to the GoPro...)

Such a stunning bird, the gannet. Kittiwakes love seeing them. Have you been to Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth? Or Fidra an island close to Bass Rock where there are Puffins. Isle of May is also good for bird photography, that's on the north side of the Firth. Well done for these images, I will put the Brampton cliffs on my bucket list. Take care on your travels.

Ah Bempton. Wonderful place! Enjoyed my first visit there pre covid dark ages and had a blast. Last trip was ruined by a spoilt 9 year old that made me just want to go back to the campsite - so we did! Haha Look forward to that shit! 😅

I know your tripod problems, i had them too with my gimbal on a tripod, but now i'm using a fluid video head instead and i like it better, i think the movements are quicker/stadier then with a gimbal head, you should give it a try. 😊

Another cracking video Richard 👍🏼 I’ve been meaning to visit here for a couple of months, hopefully there is still enough of the season left for me to go this year. The tripod vs handheld debate plagues me for photographing birds in flight, I don’t have a steady hand so struggle when it comes to focusing on the subject, but when I use a tripod, it’s always a struggle tracking the bird (mainly up and down is the issue for me). I tend to set up my tripod in a way where I have the most movement I can get in the position I am in, whether I’m standing or sitting. For me, using a tripod for birds in flight seems to work better, as it means I have a much better chance of nailing the focus. It was basically focus over tracking 🙃 Would you advise to stay in one spot for this location? I’m always to quick to move on because I fell the need to see what might be happening somewhere else, but I feel like it would be best to find a good spot and just stay there, or at least spend most of the time there. What are your thoughts?
@mywildlifeimages
@mywildlifeimages 3 года назад
Thank you and yeah absolutely the same for me although I’m so clumsy with the tripod 😂 It’s definitely worth moving around at this location as different areas presented different opportunities. Keep an eye out for the barn owls too 👍
@whynotphotography5615
@whynotphotography5615 3 года назад
@@mywildlifeimages haha, oh me too. Always tripping over the legs when panning the camera whilst standing up 🙄 Ahh that’s good to know, I was going to intend on staying in one place, I’d plan to go before sunrise as well to hopefully avoid the crowds. I will do, I was surprised at seeing the barn owls. I’ve been wanting to capture some images of them after seeing 2 at different spots local to me, went out a few times to no avail. It was the evenings after sunset when I saw them and went out to photograph, maybe mornings would be better....

Why not use a monopod with gimbal? Sure it's not as stable but it's kind of the best of both.

Some nice images! From you last video I assumed your 500 must be a MkII because you seem to be able to handle it quite easily. However, on closer inspection it looks the same as my MkI. Can you really hand hold it for "long enough"? I find mine gets quite heavy fairly quickly. You mentioned you'd be expecting the 500 produce the better results (of course it is a prime lens), but did you notice any significant difference in the final images?
@mywildlifeimages
@mywildlifeimages 3 года назад
Yeah it’s the mki so it’s really quite heavy but yeah I shoot handheld most of the time with it as I like being able to move more freely. I think the image quality is definitely better but to be honest it’s marginal and nothing to scream and shout about but it’s noticeable in sharpness. Perhaps next time I should do a review of the images where I zoom in etc? Also I much prefer having the aperture of 4 over 5.6 Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it 🙏

Lovely, I've now got a Z8 + 300 2.8 prime and a 1.4x TC. Do you think "420mm" in total would do? Perhaps I would need to crop in to DX mode if they're too far away? I'm also amazed you got big parts of the site entirely to yourself - from what I've read it gets filled up pretty early!

Really nice video Richard, we visited Bempton back in May (we’re very overdue on putting that video together 😞!!!) and really enjoyed it, although it was a bit misty! Some really lovely images here, great work! Do you know if the albatross is still there?

good tip photographing seabirds - you can wait hours for that great shot or set up tripod hi res - picnic chair sardine sandwiches lots of them and flask of tea - think its the smell - have in hand cable shutter release - silent one - obviously feeding the birds is against the rules, but if they help themselves what can we do also songbirds jays, magpies, a bag of warm crusty bread and sunflower hearts - works everytime - ex BBC art director
