I am in the Cairngorms National Park in the Highlands of Scotland to do wildlife photography. I have seen quite a lot of photos of the mountain hare, but this is the first time I am going to photograph this little guy.
Watch Wildlife photography in Scotland - behind the scenes part 2:
• PHOTOGRAPHING MOUNTAIN...
It is very windy in the valley so I had a lot of challenges with the sound but I decided to make this short behind the scenes vlog to share this great experience with you. So please forgive me for the poor sound - I hope you will bear with me.
In this short documentary vlog I am trying to show how to photograph wildlife using the foreground as a blurry element to close the bottom of the photo. I'm using the Nikon D5 and the Tamron 150-600mm G2.

In this episode I am using my main Nikon D5 camera and the Nikon 200-500mm telephoto lens.
The 4K behind the scene vlog is recorded on my Panasonic GH5 with the Leica 12mm.
For the drone footage I use my DJI drone.
More details about my camera equipment on my website.
-------------------------------------------------
••• ABOUT THIS EPISODE •••
-------------------------------------------------
I spent some days in these mountains and this is part 1 from my trip - I am currently working on part two and on a video about the equipment I brought on this photo trip.
I think the biggest challenge was the temperatures that were around 0 degrees Celsius all the time. That in combination with the sleet made it almost impossible to keep the front element of the lens free from water and snow.
Another challenge was to actually find the hares. Some of them were very shy but I was lucky to find a few that would let me get quite close.
The Scottish mountain hare is indigenous to Scotland and even though it looks quite similar to the Arctic hare, it is quite different.
-------------------------------------------------
••• WHO I AM •••
-------------------------------------------------
My name is Morten Hilmer and I work as a professional nature and wildlife photographer. In a series of short 4K videos I will share my fascination of nature with you and invite you behind the scene when I am out photographing the fascinating wildlife, the stunning landscapes and the wild nature. I work as a ILCP photographer, and nature conservation is very close to my heart.

Beside the many publications, my photographs have been awarded in the Wildlife photographer of the year and European Wildlife Photographer of the Year photo competitions.

You amaze me my friend! Where most people go "Oh look a rabbit' and take a snapshot your passion and understanding completes your vision to make beautiful photographs. Such a lesson to be learned from watching you is to stop, appreciate and slowly capture what is there and offered. In 58 years I have never seen a hare photo come close to this so in fact you are the winner for the last 58 years. Very best to you always! Pete

Hi Morten, a great vlog as usual. I can related to this video as I went to this very same location in jan and feb last year... The mountain hares are amazing tough little creatures. There are more at the top of the mountain, and you usually get better light... the weather looked pretty challenging so the valley was a good choice.. keep up the amazing work...

it is so amazing, that you could get so close to that hare. Unfortunately the hares here in northern Germany are very shy and carefully because they know that there are a lot of hunters out there. Fortunately i can observe them in my Garden through the kitchen windows some times. But as soon they recognise a movement of me behind the window they run for live.... Beautiful pictures of beautiful animals…

Outstanding video! Your production quality has gone up dramatically since the last video. The use of the second camera, the B-roll footage, and then drone footage! Superb all across the board. Your field technique is perfect. Your ability, and desire, to move in and out of position without disturbing the wildlife is commendable. Taking the time to discuss your composition and settings was really nice, too. I enjoy the back-of-the-camera shots, it feels like I'm out there with you. The amount of work you put into these videos is apparent. With videos at this level of quality, I predict your channel will grow immensely. Thanks for doing these, and cheers from Minnesota, USA.

Beautiful video, Morten! Amazing that the hare was so comfortable with your presence. I suppose you took your time to approach, and were quite respectful of its space, but I would think that the long lens looking like an eye would for sure spook the little guy. Maybe this particular hare doesn't have very good survival instincts! ;) It's inspiring to see how much you enjoy this work and appreciate nature. Great drone footage too at the end!

Get there soon as Mountain hares are being killed in their thousands in Scotland as grouse shoot gamekeepers have decided mountain hares pass ticks to grouse and therefore reduce the amount hunters can shoot dead. (there is zero evidence ticks are coming from hares, is much more likely to be passed from sheep, deer etc). It's an absolute travesty.
