Procapture is a brilliant feature that I look for the opportunity to use all the time. Here I use it to photograph Stonechats in flight. Not an easy subject. Procapture plus the stunning bird eye tracking of the OM-1 makes the impossible, possible.
I still need good light, the wind in the right direction and a bird that understands my needs!
I use the OM-1 combined with the 150-400mm lens.

Really like your videos. Very useful. For this situation I prefer manual focus and SH1. As mentioned you won't get many frames with anything useful, but with SH1 you double the chances of getting the type of shot you want. Can't see any advantage of AF since the bird in the focus plane for the split second you're capturing action. I'd also use a tripod and the remote if that were possible. Just makes things easier.

Beautiful pictures Mike. Do you switch off the IBIS in the lens at high shutter speeds? Have you noticed any difference if it is on or off? Thanks
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS Год назад
I never switch it off and when I have tried testing it (hard to test) I can see no difference.

Love your videos Mike. They are very helpful 👍🏼😊 Considering switching from Nikon to Olympus OM-1. Question: Will the Pro Capture work with a wireless radio-shutter-release?
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS Год назад
To use procapture you need to be able to half depress and fully depress the shutter release button so the quetsion is does the wireless radio device support this. I think it very unlikely, but maybe out there somewhere there is such a device. It works with a wired remote control.

Great video Mike. Very enjoyable. Just to clarify that you have set your camera in bird detect with pro capture. Is that correct? I have not used this facility on my OM1 yet but after your video I am going to give it a try.
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS Год назад
Yes. Usually SH2 procapture with bird detection

Great video and photos again Mike. I am struggling to get decent results on my om1 with procapture sh2. Many photos are out of focus and I am wondering if it's due to me using the pl 200mm f2.8 and pl 100-400 and not OM/olympus glass? Af sensitivity is +1 most of the time and af area wide depending on the composition. By all accounts this should still work even though sh2 is capped at 25 fps. Any thoughts? Thanks muchly.

@alecstewart9099 Год назад
Hi Mike excellent video as usual. I have just spent some time with stonechats and for the first time used procap sh2 with bird detect. I had some good results but it did not seem to track the bird across the frame as in your video. Mostly only getting the take off and one or two frames sharp. I was using small area frame to lock onto the bird first , would it be better to use all points. My shutter speeds were 3200 -8000sec. They were taking off parallel to me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS Год назад
The focus points will not make any difference. It will use all focus points with bird detection on, once it has found a bird. Using a small area can help if you have two birds in the picture and want to tell it which one to focus on, but after that it uses all focus points. I had a high failure rate, but that was because the birds was flying in the wrong direction. You are on the edge of what is possible so can't expect to get it right all the time.

Great tutorial. I am struggling a bit with my setup, as having Olympus 100-400 I am capped at 20fps. This quite a lot, but for capturing critical moment with small bird it is too slow. I hope they will fix this if they ever release mark II of that lens. Also I was wondering howmu current setup would work with SH1 and pumping focus. This 150-400mm is great lens but it is prohibitively expensive and 300mm pro is not that flexible.
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS Год назад
I only use SH1 procapture occassionally. C-Af is too useful.

No I do not use back button focus. Whenever I try it I quickly give up. Does not suit my hands.

Hi Mike can I ask your opinion on teleconverters and if you think they degrade photo quality?
@MikeLaneFRPS
@MikeLaneFRPS Год назад
Yes they do degrade the image but I use the 1.4x readily. The 2x on the 150-400 degrades too much and I avoid it.
