Photography and Video in National Parks guidelines without permits

There are rules for shooting video and photography in National Parks, State Parks and many other public spaces... usually no light stands or lights are allowed, including reflectors, soft boxes, microphones or anything that resembles a professional shoot. Doing vlogs for social media is considered more on the professional side now because most people are monetizing their videos. So what are you allowed to do? Summer travel season is upon us. Here are some ideas that may be pushing the line a bit, but they involve no light stands, are very portable, inobtrusive and very quick to set up and take down. Be creative, but try to stay within what's allowed.

I think they went too far with these rules, in my opinion it's borderline infringing on First Amendment rights. To make matters worse, the cost and bureaucracy of actually getting a paid permit is overkill for most people not actually professional productions. The current rules do not strike a fair balance.

Why do you even need a permit in a national or state park. These should be public spaces where you can do whatever you want as long as you don’t bother anybody else. Americans should try to get the law changed (freedom of panorama).

If a fisherman can stick his pole in the ground at the edge of a pond in a Connecticut state park, with a net and bucket next to him, I guess I can use a tripod and a light. And if I want to sell my photos afterward, it's nobody's business but mine -- certainly not the state's. A fisherman could just as well be selling the fish he catches. Or eating them, which means they have monetary value. Let them try and stop me. "The State never intentionally confronts a man's sense, intellectual or moral, but only his body, his senses. It is not armed with superior wit or honesty, but with superior physical strength. I was not born to be forced. I will breathe after my own fashion. Let us see who is the strongest." -- Henry D. By the way, I just wanted to let you know I watched your vid on cheap lighting recently, and I took your advice on the equipment. Also, I think the lantern is better than the direct light. I guess everybody has an opinion, and maybe for your applications, the lantern diffuser is not as good, but I prefer it for my applications. I guess that's why there are different kinds of products being offered. Differnt applications demand different approaches. But the equipment that you recommended are excellent and provide great value. Thanks again for the reco. The led light is top shelf, and likewise the other gear you mentioned.

Didn’t they ban drones also? Good suggestions and guidelines
@H.pylori
@H.pylori Год назад
According to the National Park Service (NPS), drone operations are strictly prohibited in all 417 parks under NPS administration, including national trails, rivers, monuments, and historic parks. To fly a drone in these areas, a special use permit is required, but it is only granted for specific activities such as research or search and rescue missions. However, it’s worth noting that some National Forests and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands, excluding designated wilderness areas, may allow drone flights. It’s important to be aware that drone regulations can vary at the state and local levels, as well as from park to park within the same park system or city/county. So, if you want to fly your drone in a national park, make sure to check with the National Park Service first. They have strict rules about drones, so follow them closely. First of all, most national parks have a ban on drones and other remote-controlled aircraft of any kind. Drones can be used for many kinds of activities, whether it is for fun or for business. However, when flying drones in national parks, you should always follow federal regulations. Drones have a significant impact on the ecosystem with their noise and air pollution. Anything that disrupts the environment will affect birds, who are very sensitive to changes in their habitat. Furthermore, drones can easily crash into trees and cause damage and injury to people or animals. Some parks even require a special permit from the National Parks authority to use drones. Therefore, if you want to use drones in National parks, you should follow rules carefully so as not to harm the natural resources of the park, or disrupt visitors when they are trying to enjoy nature.
@DIZEMANPHOTO
@DIZEMANPHOTO Год назад
@@H.pylori And also, drones over 250 grams now have TRANSPONDERS that tell the FAA exactly where you are flying, all the details of that flight. They don't have to catch you in the act... they can catch you later.

Handheld equipment, including tripod, are permitted. Also, professional photography is fine, as long as it's not for promoting or selling a product or service. For example, paid engagement or graduation photo sessions don't need a permit.

Oh this reminds me of a visit to Joshua Tree NP during a wildflower bloom people were out with point and shoots and I had my DSLR, I was trailed by a park ranger pulled me over and wanted me to show all my gear by placing it on the hood of my truck, I told him I just had a camera and lens. He threatened to give me a citation and I asked to speak to his supervisor, that was done by phone call on Monday following the trip, turns out he was a rookie ranger and went about it all wrong where the supervisor apologized for the incident. Now I can’t tell you how many people became first time visitors to Joshua Tree after seeing my photos. It is in their best interest by having new park goers pay the entry fees to the park, more revenue generated because of my photos. I can see a full production being an issue but simple photo gear to render a beautiful portrait shouldn’t be and not to mention the crazy fees they charge for permits and the expensive liability insurance policy too that we must get🤦🏻

I've been stopped multiple times by cops because I guess I looked suspicious. lol I was taking photos with my Insta360 camera in the middle of downtown Fort Worth and a cop came by to question what I was doing. I suppose a single individual walking around town with a device he's unfamiliar with is bound to cause someone to be suspicious. He was nice about it and I showed him what I was doing. I also had a cop come up to me when I was on the side of the road once taking photos of the clouds. It was a really gorgeous storm that was brewing a few miles from me. However, I was within a 5-10 mile radius of an airport...and that apparently isn't allowed. Too suspicious. I'm not sure if it would have made a difference if I had a smart phone vs my dslr, but to that cop, it just looked suspicious. Again, he wasn't rude about it, just told me I needed to not do that and that there was a dedicated spot near the airport I could take photos. I wasn't sure why he even mentioned that...because that seemed a bit off. lol But, yes, the whole "why are you taking photos here" thing has been a problem for me for a while. But, I'm used to it, and as long as you're not rude to them and obey what they say, you're good. Don't be a d**k and be rude to them because that's when problems start.

About 15 years ago a online photo club I belonged met out side Sequoia at a motel outside the park. We planned on spending the next day shooting in the park. Apparently the park service monitors online activity looking for evil doers. The problem was that one of the members mentioned he was bringing and unpaid model that wanted some photos taken of her. So that evening 4 or five people from the park service civilian clothing and uniformed, one armed with a side arm, show up at the motel and told us that if we photographed anything we brought into the park with out purchasing commercial permit all our equipment would be confiscated. One of the parks personnel was taking notes and another was taking pictures of us evil doers. Had extra photos taken of me when I said "So my photographic equipment will be confiscated if I take a photo of my lunch sack on the hood of my car?" What kind of police state do we live in?

Those permits sound like a excuse for extra income to me. Why not use a monopod and a VALS (Voice Activated Light Stand). A friend or so. Or set it on to a back rig/back pack. That way it is not on the ground. You can then also easily get the height or angle if needed.

Fun as always…and suspect the reason for the rules/permit is simply a reflection of how poorly so many creators treated the park when making videos. In talking to park rangers they often catch folks tromping about in closed areas, disturbing wildlife and at times needing rescue when recording in places they shouldn’t be!
@shoveI
@shoveI Год назад
I think the biggest cause of parks being "loved to death" is the closure of so many places. We used to have 250 million Americans with ten million open, available, free places to visit. Now we have 325 million Americans with five thousand places to visit and 999,995 locked gates and no trespassing signs. No wonder the parks are getting trampled.

Markus, I have a difficult time looking for cameras at retail stores. None of the brick-and-mortar stores near me are selling point-and-shoot or small cameras. My camera on my phone suddenly stopped working. If I order now online, I wouldn't get the items until next week. All of the events I'm going to is this week and I'll be out of the country without a working camera. I have no clue why it's so hard to buy a pocket camera that would actually work. I'm extremely sad about this. I remember when my father got laid off a few years ago from Olympus in New York because Olympus downsized. I am sad that it's no longer easy to buy a real camera at a brick-and-mortar shop. Every item is backordered. I feel hopeless.

They take weeks to get and are not guaranteed. You need to describe exactly the location and time or day and what you plan to be doing exactly. This is almost impossible for places you've never been before, and you won't know what time of day is best until you physically scout the locations the day before to see how the lighting is at different times of day. Each location determines the type of lighting and equipment used. It's almost impossible to plan all this stuff weeks or months in advance. Most of the great artistic stuff is done spontaneously and you usually won't know the perfect locations until you actually see them in person. And even that can change on a dime- weather can change or unexpected tourists show up etc.

@@MarkusPix I've always got mine back in 1-2 days and always permitted to carry full gear. Y'all making this harder than it is. It's a simple process for National Parks and Army Corps reservations

@@MarkusPix I just don't have this problem you describe. and I shoot at many parks around the country. Example: NC Div of Parks and Rec respond in less than 2 hours an this is for the entire state. I wish you the best in all your communications pro

You could just turn your girlfriends back to the sun then the front of her is in shade and meter her face. Then you can skip the lighting.

Hi Markus, what if you put the effort into doing really good scenic pics and then green screened at home? That way, when you are out there, it looks like you are just taking pics of the national forest for your personal scrap book. Though I have heard of park rangers looking through monetarized channels and going "hey, that's my park!" and fining monetarized RU-vidrs that way...
