In this short video we show you how to create your very own textured photography backdrops or surfaces. You can use these backdrops either for tabletop or for portrait photography - they can be scaled up or down for your own purposes.

I’m so glad I found you. This came in handy as I am working on a large backdrop, recycling a wardrobe card board box from my neighbors move.

Fantastic! Love the fact you can recycle boxes - I often use old amazon boxes as a base for backgrounds and backdrops. Anna xx

Don't the straight edges of the foil tend to show up as straight lines no matter how much paint you put on top? I was thinking that a better way would be to slightly rip the edges of the foil so they are random rather than straight so this would not be a problem.

Hi Terry, thanks for your comment, I'm sure slightly ripping the edges would work well to make a more natural seam, although I haven't yet tested this idea.

Do the seams at the edges of the foil cause any problems?

Hi Richard, Thanks for your comment, it doesn't cause problems when blended in well with the paint.

I like this technique, but I need something more solid than card stock for my purposes. Would this technique work on canvass, or wood? Thank you!

Hi Courtney, Absolutely - as you are essentially wrapping the underlying material with foil so yes, it will work for wood, and canvass. I hope you have great fun making them - and fantastic results for your work. Anna.

Thank you for the tutorial. I really enjoyed the final result. I used normal plaster and when I applied the paint some parts of the plaster came clinging to the brush. With the primer, did this happen to you? The final result seemed to me quite fragile, when putting dishes, for example, will scrape and the plaster will leave. Can you help me clarify these doubts please? Thanks

As plaster is designed to stick to a porous surface it may not work on the tin foil. If you use a material such as Gesso it provides the first base layer that you can then paint on. (You can buy this in most art supply shops). Anna

You may want to seal the plaster. One way would be to use a matte finish water-based urethane.
