Seriously though, dealing with HIGH ISOs...I am not afraid to use very high ISOs. I don't really like it, but recently I was taking many photos of birds passing through on migration north. I live in St. Louis, MO. The nice little spot where birds would come in Tower Grove Park (Northwest corner, Gaddy Bird Garden) , St. Louis, MO was in shadow, especially in the just before sunset or just after sunrise times. If it comes down to using a high ISO to get my shutter speed up or just not taking the shot and completely missing it> I'm using the high ISO. I mean, even if you shoot wide open, you still need a minimum shutter speed to stop action, even with birds on a perch. Is there any other way to ensure fast enough shutter speed with a maxed open aperture than adjusting ISO in shadowy twilight times? Also, I've taken @jan_wegener 's Master Class. If you are yearning to learn how to enhance your images the way they show in this video, take the Master Class. Yan goes over in detail how to do exactly what was shown in this video about smoothing out backgrounds, removing unwanted perch pieces, and enhancing plumage on birds to show their best colors > and doing it all in layers in Photoshop.

Great show, very informative and also liked the image review of the second half of the video. I totally agree that just about all images need editing. Some photographers consider post processing a crutch for those who just don't work harder in the field. I chuckle when I hear a photographer brag that they get great images straight from the camera and then I see they shot Jpegs which are processed by the software in the camera! I also find there is a dilemma in post processing wildlife if you plan to enter in a contest. Many big wildlife contests don't allow anything more than basic adjustments to color/crop/exposure, etc. I think this will change over time but one reason I don't bother entering contests like that, I shoot for myself and my own enjoyment! One more thing, I often leave my Canon cameras in FV mode where I pick the shutter speed and aperture and leave ISO in auto. For my style of shooting I find I can change a setting faster in that mode than when in Manual mode.

I fully agree about what you said about light. If you shoot in very specific light, like in the morning, it can make for beautiful shots but as far as the direction of the image goes you are fully locked-in. In flat light you can edit the image any way you want. And I also agree that shooting in manual mode with auto-ISO is the best thing you can do now. With denoising software or even the denoising in Lightroom it really doesn't matter too much anymore at which ISO you are shooting. So when you take that out of the equation you can fully focus on aperture and shutter speed, giving you much more creative control over the image. This way I can shoot literally anything while just using two dials and the shutter button. Though since this is still technically an automatically set exposure via the ISO, you do have to keep an eye on what the camera is doing with the exposure and make adjustments with the exposure compensation in some cases🙂You also have to be more mindful about using matrix, center-weighted or spot exposure. But hey, otherwise it would be way too easy 🤪
@natureredux1957
@natureredux1957 Месяц назад
But it really does matter at which ISO one is shooting. Just because it doesn't MATTER to you is entirely different then who else it should matter to. Regardless of the software equation. This Myth that it does not matter is really getting out of hand.
@MattisProbably
@MattisProbably Месяц назад
@@natureredux1957 I said "it really doesn't matter too much". Not that it doesn't matter at all. So naturally there are cases in which it does matter. You would want to shoot at low ISOs for long exposures. If you have the opportunity to set up the camera on a tripod for a landscape you would go as low as ISO 64. It would be stupid to shoot at something like ISO 25.600 in cases like that. But when you are shooting action or wildlife, situations in which the shutter speed can't be fast enough, then you don't have to worry about using higher ISOs anymore. You can and should focus on getting the shot.

Glen is only half way there. To control the look, you need to control both apeture (ie dof) and shutter speed (ie motion burr). Just like Jan, I have been shooting Manual + auto iso for 6yrs now. I need one of the exposure controls (iso in my case) to be autio, for when I am panning a bird inflight accross the dam, that goes in and out of sunlight. Auto iso is the only practical way for me. Imagine if cameras could shoot clean @ iso 100 000, then iso would not be a consideration, and you would just concentrate on the look. Jan and I would say that is pretty much mostly the case now, with most shooting can be done in auto iso already.

Very well presented, with informative content. Enjoyed the pix-fix at the end. I am a real fan of high speed and auto iso because the birds move in and out of cover making it difficult to keep adjusting iso to the scene. The new technology gives us so much versatility in approaching bird photography. Thanks again.

I’ve actually gone all the way in the opposite direction when it comes to “get it right in camera”. I shoot “the most editable picture I can”, taking full advantage of the dynamic range (using zebras on the Sony), and high resolution (leaving a little room to crop around the subject). I never expect a finished image out of camera, quite the opposite.

I agree with that. I almost always shoot a full stop under exposed. So most of my shots look too dark out of the camera. I figure I can selectively brighten them as much as I need to. But if I blow something out, it pretty much a done deal.... Besides maybe cloning out a few hotspots in the BG.

Because I'm not super confident with using a tone curve, I found a useful way to help with color cast. Duplicate layer=>filter=>blur=>average. Then invert and set it to overlay. Then adjust the opacity to help me get the desired look. It doesn't work all of the time but definitely helps when you have a strong blue cast or that crazy green glow. Your talk about that image having a brown cast made me think of this.

Excellent video! Although I employ a photojournalist approach to my photos and eschew the removal of "distracting" elements I appreciated the tweak-of-the-weak. I agree that demonstrating the capabilities of a tool on an extreme case is a good pedagogical approach. Most photographers I encounter who insist on "no post-processing" are those from the film era, who forget that all photography used to require processing in the dark room! I was surprised to see aperture-priority being preferred over shutter priority in these discussions. I shoot primarily with shutter priority and auto-iso. Unless the bird I am photographing is clearly perched and not going anywhere, I'd rather be prepared for sudden movements of my subject with a higher shutter speed and larger aperture. Depth-of-field is almost never an issue for me with eye-focus.

I recently went to a talk at the State Library in Sydney and part of what was covered was what you could modify and get published in photo journalism and nature photo contests. Was very revealing how limited the edits could be. It would be an interesting video to demo just how restrictive some photo editing has to be for certain applications
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener Месяц назад
It's one of the reasons I don't enter competitions. I want my images to look the way I enjoy to look at them, not restricted by certain rules. If you are portraying, news or events, not editing anything makes sense. But changing the WB on a nature image a lot for instance is not something I perceive as a "bad" thing. Cameras get it wrong too and then it's nice that e can make adjustments
@davepastern
@davepastern Месяц назад
I prefer metered manual mode personally. After 3 years of birding photography, I now have found that I can preset my camera settings judged on the light and I'm usually spot on. 3 years ago, I would have guessed and been wildly wrong more often than not. As I use a R3, I can set my shutter to the front dial, aperture to the rear dial and ISO to the top dial and adjust them on the fly with my eye glued to the EVF if I ever need to. I tried auto ISO and found that the R3 just typically went way too high with the ISO (no idea why), but it became a source of frustration for me. As someone who was very dubious about the EVF prior to the R3 purchase, I am sold. I had a bad experience with a Sony EVF back in 2012 for my Sony RX100II (lag, lag, lag!), which made me doubt the technology. The R3 has sold me on it and I'd never go back to a OVF - the EVF advantages are simply too great. The biggest thing for me is the AF on these new MLCs. It allows me to concentrate on exposure and composition and I am simply enjoying my photography far more. It is far more accurate than I could ever manage. I lack the finger dexterity these days to fiddle with an AF joystick and play chase the subject (I also lack the patience for such games). Jan & Glenn, I would appreciate a video on the Adobe TOS mess - what are your thought? I am contemplating cancelling my Photography CC subscription and moving to Affinity and darktable. I am rather adverse to the idea of giving Adobe free range on my images for perpetuity (yes, I know my images aren't super great like yours, but it's the principle). I am hoping yourselves, Duade, Scott over at Wild Alaska and Phil Thach cover this issue.

Instead of using the opacity on the clone stamp - it's better to use 100 percent and then use opacity on the whole layer....You get more control and don't have to do it all over again if you discover that 7 or 19 percent would have been better...

It was a lovely show with some great tips (especially the cloning and the colour cast point and how to solve it). I enjoyed it a lot. By the way, one of the things that I really dislike is logos in the images. I find them very distracting. On the editing part, I have issues with Topaz Photo AI's noise reduction. It does weird patterns around the subject most of the time. Especially with images shot with the A9iii, which "struggles" a bit with higher ISO. Cheers.

This episode is one of your best because of the useful information and for obvious enjoyment of working together. A question for Jan: Did the Pro logo on your cap increase your hat size? For Glenn: Good work adapting the larger knurled knob on your new gimbaled ball head. The overall concept is certainly the future for lighter and more compact camera mounts for both video and still photography. Benro has a new super compact self-leveling travel tripod (developed via Kickstarter) that has a built in gimbaled ball head. I hope to get mine by the end of June after waiting many months during its development and scaling up of its manufacturing.

When you say, even the best photos almost always can still be improved with a few small tweaks, I couldn't agree more ! 👍 I believe their are a % of photographers who shoot in RAW, but then mistakenly believe that any tweaks done to shot, are taking it away from what was really there. But I reality, RAW files by default, are somewhat undersaturated, and lower in contrast. The color and contrast info is available in the file, but it's been left up to the photographer with how they want to use it. I have actually said, if a person wants to say, "Straight out of the camera... I did nothing to it" then they might be better off just shooting in JPG and letting the camera do the adjustments for them. I always shoot in RAW because I want to be able to make my photo look the way I want to see it. I've taken about 300K photos in the last couple years, and I still haven't taken a single shot that could not be improved. Although I still believe the best final product starts out with the best original 👍 That last viewers shot looked straight up AI ! Just a crazy looking bird. I could see myself grumbling and skipping straight past it. It's getting bad when we can't trust our own eyes ! Great video guys 🙂 TY👍

I've also had people tell me I shouldn't need to edit photos in Photoshop. One response I tell them is - current digital cameras, while extremely advanced, cannot duplicate the image our eyes see. The technology is making the camera do it's best at what is imagined our eyes see. But our eyes automatically adjust to different things in the same image and have a much larger dynamic range than cameras. So, even if I think no cropping or changes are necessary, I always need to do something to make the image what my eyes actually saw.
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener Месяц назад

thank you for your interesting and informative video. I also shoot birds in m-mode normally with AutoIso from 64 up to 104200 and try never to go under 1/800 sec (Nikon). Birds are most the times in movement. Other animals like deer often frozen their movement and then I can shoot with lower shutter speed.

I have a sigma 150-600 and I use this along with a R7. I always shoot in manual and usually just adjust the shutter speed and ISO as I need as much light as possible with the F/6.3 aperture. And also, I've noticed that shooting in proper increments of ISO is much better than unusual numbers like ISO 2000 or ISO 5000. ISO 3200 or 6400 performs better. Not sure why though..
@KoenKooi
@KoenKooi Месяц назад
The hardware changes the gain on full stops, all the in between ISO steps are, to simplify, software under exposures. On more recent sensors (r5 and newer, the R7 recycles the m6II sensor), the iso matters less, there’s little difference between picking the right iso when shooting and pushing a few stops in post after picking the wrong one.

I have a really hard time removing things from my photos aside from dust spots and maybe a sliver of a small branch on the very very edge of the image. I want the original photo with not much erased from it. To me it turns into a fake image once you start removing actual objects from a scene.

Thanks for the cloning tip! Question 🙋 Do you do cloning/ clean up first before tonal and color adjustments? Or is the cloning/clean up the final step?
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener Месяц назад
For me it’s NR, then any removal work, because if I then make a mask I don’t have to change it. If I make a mask first and then adjust Color’s I might get into the situation that I have to make another mask again if I clone and then want to make more changes, since the image has changed. So that’s just extra work

Thank you for the very interesting insights. When I see all those pictures, it seems like the background is always lighter than the subject. Is that on purpose, or is it because you photograph in warm, exotic places? I always learned that the subject should be lighter and brighter than the background. I'm living in Belgium, where clouds and rain can keep the sun away for weeks. My backgrounds are darkish greens, browns and blues most of the time, because that is the biotope here..What's your view on that?

@MattisProbably Месяц назад
The new remove tool is awesome, so is generative fill. I usually hate generative AI but in this case it is actually a useful tool that makes sense to use. It basically does the same thing I would do with my retouches, just way faster. And it usually looks better.
@jan_wegener
@jan_wegener Месяц назад
The only downside to that on clean backgrounds just like the generative fill is that it doesn’t properly recreate the noise. When you zoom in you will see a lot of little crosses instead of the correct noise pattern. The cleanest way I have found I the content aware fill tool where you open the removal dialog and then select the area to be sourced from

@@jan_wegener I usually denoise before editing in Lightroom and then I remove unwanted things. In the denoised files it usually works out! It's true though, you do have to be mindfull. Areas edited with generative fill might also be visible in prints because the slight imperfections can become more noticable.

Here's another one - don't use teleconverters/extenders. What it should really be is - don't use teleconverters on slow zoom lenses. I use a 2x tc on an older model Nikon 300mm f/2.8 which gives me great results that I am very happy with.

It’s all about individual artistic vision, of course, but I found the parrot background to be quite nice as is. In general, I think you two look for very uniform backgrounds. While I don’t want obvious distractions, I think my eye is more accepting of variations of light and color in backgrounds. Just adding my thoughts, not at all intended as criticism. 😀

It is obvious that when you add a TC you wind up with a longer focal length. One thing that everyone is forgetting is that with that longer lens you will need a faster shutter speed (especially when handholding). That of course requires an even higher ISO... And that is always a negative.

Hi Jan I have a Canon R5, I have 100 to 400 zoom & I have been trying to photograph swallows in flight, my autofocus won't lock on, I think it's because they are too small too fast and erratic, the little buggers! Have you ever got great shots of small fast flying birds? Should I try with my 5d MK3 & a 70/300 ef lens? Would that be better because of the lower mega pixels? I limit my ISO to 6400, I can't get rid of noise, Is that a mistake too? I basically have all the gear & no idea! Regards Graham Towers

My missus and I were (still are, just got other life stuff happening at the moment) into birding, we're amateur hobbyists at best, taking pics of birds for our own memories and some quiet enjoyment. We were a little disappointed to see just how much you edit your photos when we sat down to get some tips from a how to edit video of yours. Adding/changing things that weren't there etc. We're not about no editing at all, but to me, I limit my editing to exposure/lighting/colour correction etc etc. Adding or subtracting (besides a crop) else seems disingenious but I get it's completely different if you're relying on these images as a source of income and definitely don't knock anyone for it, its just not for me. Part of the allure is to get that perfect image straight out of the camera itself, not through software.

first great show - one of your best in my opinion, lots of great information in this one. - for me I can't understand why people like the Manual mode + Auto-Iso I used it for a time, but for me it gets it wrong as many times as it gets right - plus people will then use exposure compensation with this mode - in this mode all exposure compensation does is either lower or increase your Iso, so you just as well shoot full manual and decide which of the three settings you want to float while shooting - for me I rarely want to give in on my SS or AP so I adjust my ISO to match the scene and species I have in front of me, I think most people use that shooting mode because they think it'll save them time in the field, worried the action will happen too fast and they won't get the shot - in reality we most always have more time than we think, I've never had full manual cost me a shot yet because I needed to change a setting -but as you say in the end we all should use the mode we are most comfortable with that gets us the results we are after. Again, a great show this week.

One of the basic rules that most bird photographers preach, and that you both kind of debunked here, is that you can only get great images at dawn or dusk. Although most of the time, birds are more active at those times, I can say that I have had some opportunities only present themselves at midday, when many other photographers have packed it in. I guess birds can't tell time 😂

The main message I am hearing in this video is that we know that the vast majority of people cannot afford really good glass. However, lots of people can afford to buy cheap glass, and we generate a lot more ad revenue, affiliate link revenue, etc., from those products. Also, the more people buy that stuff, the more they will need to buy courses, "brush packs and prosets," and so forth. So, please do your part, and buy the crappiest gear possible and funnel most of those savings to us over time.

As we said in the video, don’t listen to anyone but yourself and decide what you like If you go to the part where I talk about my old image style and what I prefer now I cover that exactly. Like we also said in the video. We show extreme examples when it comes to editing, to provoke thought and show what can be done. How far you want to take it on your own images is totally up to you
