I would clean the glass and do a high resolution scan first (right through the glass). Then if removing the photo from the glass is unsuccessful in any way, you have a bit of insurance (a 'usable' photo is far better than having nothing). If the photo can be removed from the glass, you can always digitize it better as you planned in the first place...

Thanks, Tom. Luckily, Kodak Photo-flo and several other brands of surfactants (wetting agents) are still available from Freestyle, and perhaps other online vendors. I still have a wet darkroom and several old Photo-Lab Indexes, full of the old time formulas for various types of processing chemicals. I don't do what you were doing for a living, but for personal projects I feel like I have one shot at success - hence the recommendation for a 60 minute soak instead of just 30 minutes. If the print emulsion was fixed with an added hardener, it will take longer for the water to penetrate through the emulsion. I appreciate the time you took to show us how to salvage that print - it's a delicate process. If you have any suggestions on how to safely separate 90 year old glass plate negatives that were stored exposed to moisture and pressure, please share the secret. Thanks again for sharing your expertise with us and for taking the time to show us how these things are done.

Hello Tom Just referred a client in NC to you. Good video. We use a similar approach with old negatives that are stuck together. Haven't tried the razor blade but we've had negatives that we eventually do pull apart after a week or so in distilled water...gently pulling two or three times a day. Some never release though. I'll give the razor a try next time. Or send them to you. It's not the mainstay of our work. greg

I have a photo that is late 1990 to early 2000 and its stuck to glass that has long ago broken, the picture is also discolored and has damage close to the stuck surface by someone who tried to rip it apart. Do you think this photo can be saved or is it a lost cause? If so how can I free my photo from the glass?

Judi Bohn If you would like to have any of the torn photos put back together and reprinted it may be within my ability. I’d have to see it to verify. Text me a snapshot of the damage if your interested 910-622-0391. It usually $150-200 for most images I put back together.

I have recently retrieved some really old photographs from my ancestral home. Near about most of them have gone mouldy or damaged by moisture and being stuck to each other or to the cellophane covering. So many of these precious photos have become smudged and damaged beyond recognition in many places. Is there any way of recovering them digitally or otherwise?

depends on how the print was created. If made with inkjet your chances are slim unless someone put a luster coating over it after printing. If it's made with photo paper and light like an led printer at professional labs then what I have shown you in the video is how I could tackle it. Remember sugar is like glue. You'll need to soak it more after you get it off the glass. If it's hardened to the paper and will not dissolve with water i've used liquid dish soap or wait till it dries and use fingernail polish remember (pure acetone). Again, this only works if it's an actual photograph made with light not ink.

can I use distilled water I have a photo of my daughter and it's the only one it's about 11 years old and it's stuck to the frame
@TomSappPhotographer28412
@TomSappPhotographer28412 6 лет назад
kim Davis I would use bottled water/distilled and use a q-tip or cotton swab with water on a less vital area, maybe a half inch section in a corner. Just swirl the q-tip in a circle lightly to apply the water. Wait an hour or two. If you do not see any surface deterioration then you are most likely in the clear to soak the print in distilled water to remove it. Technically my teacher in school told me to use photo flow. It's a pricy chemical used in developing film and prints traditionally. With the decline of film and print processing this chemical is not as easy to come by. You can still order it online. I have found distilled water is a step below but generally does the trick.

@TomSappPhotographer28412

mita123 if the color comes off then it's an ink jet print and should never come in contact with liquid. This video is for prints crated with light. Traditional film printing paper...

In theory this is a great solution but your video made it look easier than it actually is. I tried your theory with the utmost care and patience but after sore fingers and the dental floss breaking on more than 1 occasion, I gave up. Needless to say the photo I was working on is not even half way lifted, and I have albums full of photos with the same problem. Any solutions for when they're "really stuck" ???
@TomSappPhotographer28412
@TomSappPhotographer28412 9 лет назад
You could hire me!! :) I don't remember mentioning dental floss in the video? You have to keep in mind I did go to school to learn how to do this. It does take practice and an understanding of what the paper is capable of. There have been many paper types throughout the progression of photography. Knowing the differences helps a lot when determining how much pressure, how long to soak the print without damaging it or in your case how long to soak it for full saturation. If it's thick paper it will take longer. It's like cooking. If you know your spices and are willing to take the time you can achieve a gourmet meal.

gigi37 bottled water is in general ok as long as they haven't added minerals back into it before distribution. City water and well water will leave mineral deposit stains.

You're not using a "razor blade," as you describe it, but the blade from a utility knife, which is duller and much thicker. You would get a better, more controllable result with a single edge razor blade mounted in a holder for removing paint from glass. Also, 30 minutes is an insufficient time to pre-soak a print whose dried-up emulsion has been stuck to glass for decades, 60 minutes would be a minimum for me. I would also add Photo-Flo to the initial bath to reduce the surface tension of the de-ionized water and let the water soak in quicker. I assume you make a detailed scan of the image before working on it, so that you can use Photoshop as your backup, if all else fails.
@TomSappPhotographer28412
@TomSappPhotographer28412 8 лет назад
+Gary Pope you are correct on all points. for this print 30 minutes was all that was needed. When i was in school 60 was the norm as was your photo-flo recommendation, however the older the print the more attention needed to prevent it from being soaked to much rendering it more fragile. There is a higher level of understanding in your ability. Much higher than this video was meant for. Photo-flo is becoming harder to find on the shelf down the road. Most people don't know where to get a print from film made these days let alone buy photo chemicals. Thank you very much for your knowledge contribution. I hope others benefit from it.

Hi i have a large amount of family photos are now severely damaged from a flood. They are hardened, and stuck together. I read about putting them in the freezer in hopes of being able to pull them apart after that. So far it has not worked. I called a professional who told me best thing to do is cut my losses and throw them out because there is no way to salvage them. This breaks my heart. The photos I have are primarily regular photos from 70's 80's 90's and some black and white from 50's, 60's..Is there any chance anyone at all can give me some advice? I would really appreciate it. Thank you!
@TomSappPhotographer28412
@TomSappPhotographer28412 7 лет назад
If you sent them to me I would soak them in water as demonstrated in the video. You can try some photoflow if you can find any these days. If you are going to toss then you can pay $60 for me to give it a shot. No additional charge if I am unable. Send a box with with photos and shipping to and from. Might get lucky ...
@mariocastaldini6290

Tom, how many pictures for $60..? I havent counted and cant even because they are all stuck but its definitely more than 40. Dealing with a lot of pictures here.
@TomSappPhotographer28412
@TomSappPhotographer28412 7 лет назад
Mario Castaldini it's an hourly fee. Time per print depends on severity of damage of each print. Most prints I can get done in one or two hours. Be thankful it's digital now. It took a lot longer and cost twice as much when I use to have to work on the physical print with dyes and brushes. Send me an email with sample pics if you want a more accurate quote. Most people in your situation pick their favorites for restoration and have the rest scanned in for digital archiving so it can't happen again and make the existing damage worse.
@NeilRhodes
@NeilRhodes 6 лет назад
Interesting and useful IF you do need to actually remove the print from the glass. So in three hours the print is removed but still damaged. In less the 3 hours it is easily possible to scan it through the glass and restore it digitally. I do this regularly even with portraits and teh results speak for the themselves, This is a great DIY solution if you have no other option. Digital restoration is another route you can take.
@TomSappPhotographer28412
@TomSappPhotographer28412 6 лет назад
Thank you for your comment. I did in fact scan the print before removing it from the glass just incase. I document every stage incase the unforeseen happens I always have the next best option. The issue with scanning it through the glass is that you need to manipulate more of the print to restore it. The dirt trapped in the air pockets took up the majority of the vital information area. The less you need to fix the more authentic the restored print will be. The print in the video was found on a flooded basement floor. It is the only known image of the first school in the county. I was asked by the state museum to take every precaution. If someone brought me an image and did not want to pay for the labor intensive process of taking every precaution I would do as you commented. In this case I was excited the clients interest allowed me to use my photography institute education to bring this historical document back to life.
