I am a beginner in the art of photography but the reason I got into it was for my painting. I use my camera mainly to take different photo's to use in my paintings at home, using multiple photos to compose some of my paintings.My gear is entry level cannon equipment that works excellent for me,it is well made to take my abuse. I wish to thank you for making my understanding of my gear and how to use it to it's fullest.

I should add that spending a little more for a good lens is a must as it will not only improve the entry grade cameras' ability if will make it easier to take better photographs. I use a 70 x250 lens and found the one lens gives me the closer shots and not having to get real close and spook the wildlife I find. Happy photographing everyone.

A very good set of recommendations Ian, I would add one more : Don't forget to turn around. Oftentimes a good composition may be missed by not seeing the perspective behind you.

Great tips Ian as well as some great shots as always. I really agree with the advice about taking time with compositions and enjoying the experience of photography, this comes across really strongly in all your videos. With AI and better technology, if you don't enjoy the process and the pleasure of creating something that makes you feel good about what you are doing, irrespective of what others feel, your hobby is likely to end up short lived.

Another great video and very wise words. I think that your best attribute other than selecting the scene is your patience in waiting for the light to be just right. That last shot was a cracker. And belated congrats on hitting the 50k for subscribers, many more to come I am sure. If I lived in the UK then I would be joining a workshop of yours for sure!

I recently went for full frame from APSC, however, I have had a 70-350 mm tele ion my APSC which I now keep on my a6700 as its got bird focus/animal focus :-) this is now my dedicated wildlife setup. This allows me to focus on my full frame landscape through my 28-75 zoom and an 18mm prime. I don't intend to buy a flash lens for my full frame camera when I have something which is quite acceptable. A great video again and just bought the e-book so looking forward to reading that also.

Another great video Ian. It is so nice to hear and see a pro photographer preach what they practice. I have long noticed your very deliberate approach to composition and timing. What a great lesson. Thank you for investing your time and talent to share with us. Have you recently changed your sound. I've been noticing your great sound quality for some time now. Great stuff. Cheers.

Finding a great composition and revisiting it through the seasons, and different times of the day is a great hint, sometimes the sun is only in the correct position twice a year. Also different weather conditions from fog to bright sunny days. A silent question I ask, is what mode suits and what do I want to control. I flick through manual, shutter or aperture priority depending on what I decide I want to use.

@@ian_worth it is. When I lived in Pembrokeshire many years ago, I took my then 6 year old daughter there to take some film photos with my Canon SLR. This was in 2004 and I have recently got those negatives scanned 🙂

👋 Ian. I notice you have your ISO at 125 for many of your photos. Is there a reason for that, or is it just coincidental? ❤the videos.
@ian_worth
@ian_worth 24 дня назад
125 is my base iso on the fuji xh2, so typically I try to shoot at this unless I need to raise it for some reason ie: increasing my shutter speed. 👍

My mistake is taking the image and moving on to a new scene ….. my best shots are when I work a composition … take the shot and then subtle movements of the camera to try and improve it. Inevitably my first image isn’t the best …. Often it is the last …. And then I wonder what if I had tried another variation, why did I stop then?

what is the model and brand of your tripod? Thanks
@garygalt4146
@garygalt4146 24 дня назад
It really doesn’t matter. Go to your local camera store WEX is one of the last stores used by professional photographers there are a few others. You want the sturdiest that you can afford and the weight you can carry. I have about 9 I never look at the manufacturer name before choosing which one to take It’s always how far do I have to carry it, what size camera and lens I will be using and finally the weather conditions the more wind the bigger my tripod oh I forgot. Camera speed you are hoping to use. Long exposure again the sturdy tripod is a must. I was part of my old studio team of photographers. Photographing the launch of a frigate at camel lairds. I was sent up the crane gantry and it was the afternoon of the great hurricane [remember Micheal Fish what storm weather report] I was hanging on for dear life. I had a Gitso tripod from the 1950s and an RB 67 Mamia medium format. The head on the tripod was about the size of your two hands. Even back when I was young and fit I hated lugging that thing around. But even in a storm near the top of a ship yard crane my photograph’s were pin sharp. Moral to the story. Stop buying things because you see someone with something. What right for him might not be right for you. Support your local shops. Try out And finally pro’s tend to consider price. Will it pay for its self.

Mistakes? To me mistakes are using the wrong ISO for the lighting. Not knowing how to use the camera and lenses to get the most out of an image. I would say things amateurs do. Not knowing how to compose a picture. Taking pictures for photography’s sake, which gives you bad uninteresting images. Before or after you take the shot, ask yourself, would you put this on your wall?

I disagree with your assertion about shooting what's cliche. That's like saying that a person shouldn't learn Stairway to Heaven because it's been played to death. If that's the case, one shouldn't play Beethoven's Fur Elise because it'll look like you're a beginner. WHO THE CARES!!!! I studied in Cambridge when I was a kid and avoided seeing and photographing the usual sights because I didn't want to look like a "tourist" and I will always regret it. I was a tourist. Photograph the St. Paul's, Paris's Eiffel Tower. It's their turn for Pete's sake.
