Photography Tips, Magazine Cover Shoot

I was approached by Mary Washington University's Alumni Magazine to shoot the cover and 2-page inside spread of acclaimed New York City Beat Poet, Hettie Jones. The editor and I spoke at length about Hettie's reluctance to be photographed and that even though I was being hired to do the assignment, she was not certain the piece would even run. Ah, a challenge! How do I win over Hettie and make her not only feel good about being photographed, but also have her look good. I was fortunate to schedule a call with Hettie and we had a great chat. She told me straight out that in all the years of being photographed, she's hated pretty much every photo of her and much prefers being photographed on the street with her bicycle from afar rather than up close and personal. I mentioned that for the cover and inside spread how some nice environmental portraits of the artist in her workspace would really drive the piece home and and she agreed. It also worked out that she scheduled me to shoot on the same day as the writer would be visiting so as not to demand any more of her precious time.

I felt honored to have spent the afternoon with Hettie and thankfully she not only enjoyed the session, but she very much liked my photos. In fact, she told me that I'm the second photographer to ever have photographed her in a way she felt flattering. That was one of the best compliments ever and I felt I had done my job and risen to the challenge.

Both images were shot with a Nikon D3s and off-camera flash. The cover shot was with a shot with a 70-200 f/2.8 and the inside spread was shot with a 24-70mm f/2.8.

Great video Adam. What amazing feedback to get from someone who doesn't like having their photo taken! It would be great to describe where you set your flash guns up in relation to the frame, maybe a diagram or something, just to show how you got the desired effect? Would love to see more tutorial stuff from you, particularly on the post production side of things. Your work in Lightroom is incredible! Thanks Denver

Really enjoyed this video Adam I feel you got alot of poetry in your photos something I love seeing in peoples work. I've nothing against Jared, I'm a subscriber I watch his videos but I feel his more about the business than the art of photography and I'm sure his main source of income comes from his store than photography but hey as long as his happy who gives a shit. right?

As the assignment was to deliver a cover, and that spreadsheet, did you allready think about leaving space compositionaly for the written text ? Did the publisher give you any instructions, or do they only tell you, they need 2 pictures ? And last Q did you choose the pictures , or did you send them all those pics you showed us, and they chose ? Thanks Mr.Lerner

Very insightful view into the assignment - I couldn't help but notice the Fuji x100 on your desk. I picked one up today, and so far I'm absolutely thrilled with the camera. Are you planning on doing any additional videos regarding that camera?
