Photography with Film at Night - My 3 Tips for Perfect Exposures

Let’s talk about getting perfect film exposure using manual metering at night. I’ve got 3 tips to share that will make your experience more successful!
1. make sure you’re using an appropriate film sensitivity. I am using an 800 ISO film for this photo shoot.
2. push process your film. Whether you’re developing in your own lab or sending it out to be processed professionally, you can “push” the film during development to recover your highlights and preserve your shadows.
3. think about where you’re pointing your spot meter. I meter the brightest area of my scene and make that my highlight reading. If you try to meter in the shadows or find middle gray, you’ll likely get a bad reading.

Great video! Infectious energy. I have been waverting between a 6x17 adapter for my 4x5 or a dedicated 6x17 camera and you've certainly pushed me in one direction 😂

I really appreciate that! I am usually a pretty chill person, but that right there got me all excited! And yeah, save up for that 6x17. The Da-Yi is a nice intro into the concept, but I am really looking forward to sticking it on a shelf and letting it gather dust. Haha!

nice one. maybe you could inspect the back with the torch and use sand paper to polish all places where the film is touching the plastics.
@JudeStreicherPhoto
@JudeStreicherPhoto 10 месяцев назад
That's a good idea. I have some high grit sandpaper for polishing - like an automotive sandpaper - that might just do the trick. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll see if that helps prevent film damage!

I disagree with pushing your film at night unless you are trying to handhold. If using a tripod there is no need to push. All you do by pushing is shrink the dynamic range of the film, ie, make it more contrasty. Pushing film does not make it more light sensitive and the increase in grain can be distracting. Plus, many labs don't offer push/pull processing for color.

That's a super good point, and one I didn't even consider. I just always assumed "push your film, it'll be better for low light." Thank you so much for the correction and comment! It's something I've done out of habit! I really appreciate the helpful advice!

I'm not much of a film/street photo guy, but that pano at 17:37 is sweet! Love the full moon just hanging over it. Great work! You've got a lot more patience than I do.. No way I could've waited to get that scene

Yeah, it was a bit unnerving being out in the streets with my large format and a video camera. Not sure if I'll be attempting it again anytime soon, but I still had fun. That photo is easily my favorite too!

It's great that you showed human error and equipment issues as a factor, a lot of content creators would edit out anything that isn't perfect. Film photography is challenging and mistakes and technical problems happen. There is no delete button when using film. But challenges and adversity build character and skills and it's always good to show that a "failure" isn't really a failure. It's a lesson learned.

Haha! There was just too much human error to ignore! Seems to happen every time I go out with film. I love it though because it really teaches me so much faster than anything else ever has!

Yay! I'm so happy to hear that! It only took an entire roll of film to get to one good photo! Haha!

Last image, pure fire! Btw was looking at that Da-Yi 6x12 back. It's between that and a linhof viewfinder, or fixing my car. We'll see what I'll put on the list for Santa this year ;-)

Do you still have the Mamiya RZ67? Don't think I've seen a video of yours for some time featuring the RZ.
@JudeStreicherPhoto
@JudeStreicherPhoto 10 месяцев назад
I do still have it. I just don't tend to wander out with it as much lately since it is actually quite a bit bigger and heavier than my other cameras - it won't even fit in my giant photography backpack.

@@JudeStreicherPhoto I ask, as that was the camera & video that brought me to your channel. I've got an RZ myself so I definitely understand the bulk & weight issue. Whenever I do get it out & about, I always appreciate the results. I enjoy your content and wish you well.

@@marklorimor6672 That's so cool to hear, thanks for sticking around! Yeah, I've been wanting to get it back out there - have a few rolls of Fuji Pro 400 that have been calling my name!
